What a great concept for a series of stories! I always enjoy the tension of their unspoken but obvious attraction for one another. I especially like how you wrote this part:  Each morning he looks forward to seeing her, but everyday it’s becoming a little bit harder to hold back and bite his tongue. He laughs with her and makes jokes that layer over the things he really wants to tell her and quite frankly it’s becoming exhausting. His palms are sweaty as he steps out of the elevator and makes his way into the office.

It seems to me that early S2 Jim sees Pam as is work girlfriend. He sort of has convinced himself of this, and then there are moments where he is shaken back to reality, like the fight you covered. I find his thought process dealing with this realization very interesting and heart breaking. Please keep up the great work!

Author's Response: Thanks WhatAWaste!!  Yeah, I think sometimes Jim got away from himself and then was hurt even more when he was reminded of what he couldn't do. It were those moments that I found so heartbreaking for him.  I'm glad you enjoy the concept - you know, it's hard to think of something that hasn't already been done by now, lol.

I really enjoy your take on the aftermath of this argument. I know I watched and wondered, "What is she thinking!?!?!" It's nice to see her gradual process from meek Pam to miss FNB, and in your story you can see her slowly starting to find herself. Oh, and one of my favorite lines, which just nailed S2 Pam: She thinks about the chances she doesn’t take. Thinks about him and opportunity and being fine with her choices. Her last thought before drifting off is that it she shouldn’t have to convince herself, too.

Bring on the angst! I can handle it!

Author's Response: Thanks for the kind words, WhatAWaste!  I'm glad you're enjoying this so far.  Yes, Pam's actions could be simply mind boggling sometimes!!

Wow. This is wonderful and very intriguing. I love your version of sexually confident Pam in Week's End, but this is also quite wonderful and thoughtful and I totally see where you're coming from and find each scenario plausible in both stories. Now to my long list of favorite things!

1. "Okay," she said, because it wasn't a yes or a no, and because her heart had sped up and it felt like something other than arousal. She had a quick flash of herself and Roy at seventeen and, though she wasn't collected enough to remember, she thought she had said "okay" then, too. As Jim guided her down the hall to his bedroom she wondered if it was a coincidence or a pattern.  I love the way you describe Pam's anxiety. It's not that she doesn't want him, but she is still struggling to find her voice and confidence. I think so many women have been there, and you write it so subtlety and so well.

2. I enjoy the addition of the stockings. It shows who she is and where she wants to be. I also saw it as such a “girl” thing to do to impress a guy, rather than something that makes her feel beautiful or comfortable. She wants to be the girl of his dreams, live up to his expectations. She’s thinking more of him rather than of herself. I cannot express how much I love this detail because, again, it’s something so many women struggle with, and you’ve written it so well.

3. "Oh, I didn't mean, uh, like, in in," he said, stroking her hair. "I -," he was searching her face for the end of his sentence. Finally, with a small laugh that dictated the shape of the knot in her stomach, he said, "Did I?" Jim being both the consummate gentleman and a flirting with her, maybe a bit too much (at least for Pam right now). Which is totally understandable. He doesn't know what's going on in her head. How could he? But I love seeing Jim portrayed as realistic rather than the all-knowing, perfect boyfriend at all times.

4. Pam knew what this meant, of course, but she wanted to know how many and when and where and why her instead of those others and why, suddenly, now. I always imagined that Pam would need to have some of this answered before they were intimate. Also, I love the way you write the urgency of her thoughts.

5. I love love love that you didn’t have Pam just push through her anxiety and her unanswered questions and be with him. It shows her growing confidence that she realized she needed other things, or to figure something out in her head, before she was with him.

I’m dying to see the next installment. You made my day by posting the story, and you made my week saying that an update will be posted soon! How many times did I write “love” in this review? This may be a record. More smutcake please!

Author's Response: You know, you and Tink (NanReg - it\'s a long story) are pretty much the valiant, reliable pillars holding up my fic self-esteem. There was much fear and trembling about publishing this one - I\'m honestly shocked by how positive the response has been. I think it was because I sat over here by myself with it for far too long and because, well, let\'s just say I\'ve put on my own, personal pair of black thigh-highs for my own, personal Jim. In fact, it was my memories of that point in my life combined with how Pam is now on the show that made me go back and seriously re-evaluate how I chose to interpret the beginning of their relationship in Week Days/Week\'s End. That\'s not to say that I don\'t still think what I wrote there to be entirely possible, but, so far, I just *like* this one better. I kind of hope it stays that way. Thanks so much for your wonderful review. You don\'t know how important it is to me to receive feedback like this.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

I know for a while I thought that Jim and Pam would just mesh so perfectly right away-- emotionally and physically ::cough, first date nookie, cough:: because I think that, yes I’m going there, because I think they are (fictional) soul mates. But the more that I’ve been thinking about this and through the interesting discussions that have been happening around these parts, the more I agree with your assessment that there would be a period of adjustment and awkwardness before they could truly mesh.

I love the mix of longing, nervousness, familiar teasing, and ease that you’ve managed to illustrate so vividly, yet subtly. For example, sigh:

He's standing in front of her now, so she lets her knees fall open. He steps between them. "I'm going to pretend I have no idea what you're talking about. More than anything, it was probably the virginity-related, um, incident on prom night."

Pam chuckles, looks away. "Did you rush out of her bedroom with her tie up your sleeve?"

"Something like that." He runs his hand down her arm and the moment lingers. His fingers graze the back of her hand before he laces them with hers.

I also adore the way you have them tell each other “I love you.” It’s so natural, sweet, simple, and very realistic. And I love that you have them address, honestly and openly, how they each tried to move on. I can’t leave a review and not point out my absolute favorite part which left me smiling and made my heart go thud: Jim turns onto his side, bringing their other legs into the tangle of limbs. "Honestly, I don't think this is a date."

"What do you think it is?"

He's playing with her hair and watching himself do it, the side of his arm indifferently brushing against her breast. Jim says nothing, but his eyes flick to hers anyway, seeking agreement.

Thud. I can’t wait to read the conclusion of your wonderful story.

Author's Response: Hi, WhataWaste... slowly picking through all of these lovely reviews. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment & comment so thoroughly (as you always do). Bless you for quoting \"Did you rush out of her bedroom with her tie up your sleeve?\" It\'s my absolute favorite line from this chapter. I struggled with the ending of this part, in that I wanted it to be a very simple moment - these are not high-drama people, after all - so I\'m so pleased to hear that you think I succeeded. Again, thanks so much. I\'m looking forward to hearing what you (all of you) think of the final chapter.

Wow. I could literally copy and paste the entire story to point out what I love. As always, you have a way of capturing the characters, tension, heat, and love so well. Amazing. Beautiful. Perfect.

Being completely truthful, this is the best first date/ first time fic I’ve ever read. I didn’t think if was possible to top Week’s End and Week Days, but you’ve done it. What you have written here is quite different from the scenario I had originally concocted in my head—but your version is sooo much better and rings much truer! I adore nervous and overly-excited Jim! Really, what makes this (as well as everything you have written) so deliciously hot is that it is believable and realistic without getting too clinical. I also am incredibly fond of the way you intertwined their conversations about their past and their feelings for one another in a sweet, honest, and drama-free fashion.

Two questions. I adored reading this from Pam’s perspective and I was wondering if you have considered writing a companion piece to this where we get to read it from Jim’s? Also, I’m curious about one of the details of this wonderful world you’ve created. You mention that Tuesday was the last time Jim was with Karen; where does the beach getaway fall in your timeline?

Thank you for writing and sharing your talents with us here!

Author's Response: Ah, the old \"copy/paste\" problem! I love it when that happens to me when I\'m reading. I was avoiding being clinical and overly dramatic like the plague (you should have seen some of the earlier drafts...), and I\'m glad you think I\'ve succeeded. I was thinking about re-writing this from Jim\'s perspective, but I\'m not quite sure how to do it without re-hashing too many details. I\'ll have to consider it. As for your second question, Beach Games falls in my version of events in the same place that it does in the canon. In the original draft of this story that I sent to my betas, Jim\'s answer to Pam\'s question was that he slept with Karen the night before the events of The Job took place. There was some disagreement on the plausibility of that, so I pushed it back a day. In short, I don\'t think there was any way that Captain Denial didn\'t continue to sleep with Karen, even after what happened at the beach. You\'re always so kind, dearie. Thanks for your review.

Oh Talkative, you know how much I love the way you write angst. You broke my heart, yet it's okay because we know it has a happy ending eventually. I could practically feel the tension in the room, the want and frustration in Jim's voice, and the confusion in Pam's.

I have never been able to come to a logical conclusion of what happened after Casino Night, but this story makes sense. It gives him a chance to test the waters again, be frank (because what does he have to lose), and say goodbye in a way. Your story is beautiful and heartbreaking. I especially like how you've made their interaction very in character-- yes there is anger, but even drunk they don't overreact. They don't need to to communicate what is really going on. So much is said just by the way you write the way he looks at her, the way he has stopped pretending. Just wonderful. Like always!

Quick question? Am I right in assuming that Pam is the one who says "I love you. So much. Okay."

Eagerly awaiting your next masterpiece!

Author's Response: Hey, WaW - yeah, it\'s Pam that says \"I love you.\" But we all know she doesn\'t mean it in the way Jim wants her to mean it, right? Or at least she won\'t be admitting it for a little while... This is my own logical, possible conclusion as to what happened after CN. I do like the idea that they had an opportunity to take another crack at one another, to do more damage, but to be more honest. Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and, as always, leave such a marvelous review. I hope to have something new to share with you soon. All the best.

Sorry it's taken me so long to review. I've been busy and letting the story marinate. This is wonderful. How do you encapsulate so much in such a short story? I adore the way you have connected the different threads of S5 and their past and created a subtle, touching story. I could go on and on about what I truly love, but I'll just share a few of my favorite lines that give us such wonderful intimate details of their life together:

he thought of how, lately, she had taken to giving him fierce hugs from behind while he was in the middle of some necessary chore - the dishes, dusting, painting. Her arms would suddenly be around him, somewhere below his ribcage, a tight, insistent squeeze. "You're the best thing ever," she would say into his back with a sigh, resting her forehead between his shoulderblades.

The display tells him that Beesly, Laura (home) is calling. This suggests that Pam isn't answering her phone, a cryptic hint as to how she has spent her first afternoon of freedom. He lets it go to voicemail.

"I can just tell." And then, because he wanted to reassure her, to make her see it, and because she was putting her finger squarely on the most frightening thing he could think of, he asked, "Can't you?"

"I can," she nodded, "I hope I can?"

but he didn't need to make that her problem in the moment. She'd think of it soon enough.

Seriously, I could go on and on. It really is wonderful. I should note that I have reread this and What the Jukebox Knows several times, and I grow to love and appreciate them more with every read (just as I do with all of your lovely stories.)

Slowing pulling myself up off the floor.

Lordy girl! First, I loved this hot little number so much that I'll be purchasing Desire as soon as I can.

The dream sequence is perfection--things slowly coming into focus and the loss of inhibition--just delicious.

"Did you know this was happening?" she asked, turning her head so the hair on his chest grazed her cheek. ... He was stroking her spine; long, lazy caresses that made her back arch and her belly kiss his. She pressed her thighs together as one of his big hands covered her bottom, pulled her closer to him. "What are you doing?" she heard her own voice in her head.

"I'm, um," by way of an answer, he turned them so she was on her back. His hand was in her hair, on her breast, and between her legs. He wasn't shy or tentative. He seemed to know her already, even as she marveled at how strange it felt.

Off the floor but now fanning myself.

Oh! And the conversation that they have at the end of the day was adorable and sexually delightful. I can see her fidgeting, his smirk and his sadness and the rapidly-moving thoughts running through his head. Also, I know I've said this before and I'll say it again--your characterization of Pam is amazing. I really like how you show her realizing her attraction to Jim and trying to figure out what it all means. While it's obvious to us that Jim and Pam are meant to be together, it's more complicated for her, and I love that you don't take her situation lightly. And I love her, how do I say this, realization of Jim as a man, rather than a nonsexual friend. He's deliberate, strong, and sexy in her unconscious and then later conscious thoughts. Just sublime! And hot.

Now, off to the bookstore.

Author's Response: Hullo WaW... :: extends hand :: Do consider checking Desire out from your local public library. It\'s what I did. Libraries with high circulation = happy Talkative. Please note that, despite how the title makes it sound, the book isn\'t wall-to-wall smut. Most of it is about other types of desire - religious, etc. One essay in particular was driving my sense of this story. It\'s called \"Women Writing Desire\" and it\'s by Ruth Knafo Setton. She writes \"To me, desire hinges on the moment of recognition. The climax in a tale of desire - even more than sexual fulfillment - is the moment when the lovers see each other and accept what they see.\" I wrote toward that; toward Pam just barely beginning to accept what she\'s seeing, if only subconsciously, privately. I\'m glad you like the conversation that comes near the end of the story - it was the part that required the most delicate touch and the most rewriting. It\'s always terribly difficult to gauge what Pam will admit and how Jim will react this early in the game. And, finally, I wanted my characterization of Jim in the dream she had to be her subconscious trying to point to what she already knows - that he does want her and does feel these things for her. Thank you so much, as always, for your kind review. Happy reading!

Blanca, this is wonderful.

There is so much to love here that I almost don’t know where to begin. I’ll start with your characterization. The way you have written Jim is perfection. I agree he initially must have felt the desire to please, prove he is worthy or better than Roy and that it must have been a slow process for this compulsion to fade. The use and descriptions of the different Valentine’s Days is so interesting that I think I’m just going to have to make this chapter part of my personal canon. It breaks my heart to think of Jim painstakingly making a card for Pam and debating if it is time or right to express his feelings, and it breaks my heart to see Pam’s confusion and personal struggle between what she really wants and what she thought she wanted. And it warms my heart to see Jim and Pam finally relaxing as a more secure couple without all the bells and whistles that can be silly about Valentine’s Day. I also like how you tie this all together with something so delicious as public sex!! Perv that I am.

Ladies, I feel so horrible that I have been MIA with the reviews and will try to fix that shortly!

What a treat! As other reviews have mentioned, your characterization is spectacular and the tone and dialogue are pitch perfect. I have tired to visualize what happened immediately after CN and I always come up blank. Fallout is so well done that everything that you have presented seems so obvious--like of course this is what happened, and of course this is how Pam found out about the transfer, of course Pam would try to make things go back to normal, and of course Jim would be that deliciously bitter towards her.

Really, there is so much to love and so many great details and lines that I’m sure I’ll have a list of more subtle favorites that I missed on my first two read. I’m fighting the urge to damn near copy and paste the entire story, and I’m not doing so well. Here are a few of my favorites:

He smiles and feels ashamed of the harsh, angry glee. But he takes a breath, lets it settle, and feels calmer. Stamford is his way out and the knot in his stomach relaxes a little. He wipes up the coffee on the counter and takes the mug back to his desk, and when he looks up there she is at reception.

Their eyes collide for an instant before he looked away. He flushes, curses himself, and forces his mind to go blank as he sits down and pretends to work. Stamford, Stamford, Stamford. It’s like static in his mind, running interference. Everything else is just noise.

His anger, sadness, and embarrassment are so wonderfully encapsulated here.

She watches him leave, watches the door slowly shut behind him, because it’s easier than looking anywhere else. And she doesn’t want to see Jim watching her with that expression she always hates, the one that says ‘Why the hell are you with that guy?’

Time moves strangely for the rest of that afternoon, simultaneously galloping and crawling. The tension is excruciating and she just wants the day to be over already so she can go home and blank the whole thing out. But when the day is over he’ll be gone; he’ll be gone and she might never see him again. The pain of that prospect is so sharp it’s hard to breathe around.

Heartbreakingly perfect

He flinches when he sees what she’s holding, and his eyes turn sharp with disbelief. She’s never really seen him angry before. Backing away a step he shifts his hold on the box as if to say ‘I don’t have a spare hand’. “Keep it,” he says, “I’m taking enough junk with me already.”

::thud::

xoxoxo, thank you for posting such a beautiful and sweet story. It makes the wait for tonight's episode much easier. Your story hits all the right notes. I laughed, I smiled, and it tugged on my heart strings.

Just wonderful.

Author's Response: Well my work is done then.  Glad you actually got to see the episode!  I know it was dicey there for a few!   Thank you for such a lovely review. :)

Miss Talkative, what a tasty little morsel you have given us today! Oh Season Two sexual tension, don’t you just love it? You mentioned that you are in a sorta of Season Two vibe right now, well I think I speak for all of your fans when I say embrace that feeling!

Some of my favorite parts:
His arm rushed to circle her shoulders and he caught himself, trying to force brotherly, friendly thoughts down to his very fingers. She sighed and let her right arm fall across his legs.

Pam, you adorable, conflicted woman, stop torturing the poor boy.

It seemed that he had decided that he was going to kiss her. Really, seriously decided it. Not like all of those other times, when he had toyed with the idea, knowing there was no way he could find the nerve to do it

He laughed at her, at the very idea that he was within minutes of ending all of this nonsense, and replied, "You'd have to try harder than that to crush me. I'm a lot bigger than you," it felt dangerous to say it, to place their bodies in the same sentence.

He sat up straighter. He was going to do it. "Pam," he heard himself say quietly. He wanted her to turn her head. He wanted to pin her with a look.

::thud:: Even though we have had years of Jim and Pam as a contented couple, it is always nice to return to the years of longing, anticipation, and not knowing what could happen next. Bravo my dear. Please don’t keep us waiting so long for your next story.

Blanca my dear, bravo. And I am blushing from your kind words. I find Pam's transition between S2-4 to be so fascinating. Your exploration of her confusion, desires, and need for closure are wonderful. Now, a few of my favorite parts:

She let him pull her inside, because breaking contact was unfathomable. The door closed behind her and he let go of her wrist, but she scarcely had time to register the loss before his hands wove through her hair and his mouth found hers in the dark.

"Jim." He seemed to recognize her tone, and his laughter died away. His eyes went wide and the terrified look in them caused a stab of guilt to pierce her chest. She knew she was to blame for putting that look there, and it solidified her resolve.

I can't wait to read what's next!

I'm so glad you completed this story. I know you've been tinkering with an idea for a while, and I'm happy to be able to finally read it. So many times during S3 you think that everything could have been different if just one thing changed--and you wrote a great AU that feels very true to the show and the characters that accomplishes that.

I adore the way you wrote the subtle distance between Karen and Jim as well as the undeniable connection between Jim and Pam.

Hope to see more writing from you soon!

Author's Response: It's funny, isn't it, how so many opportunities were missed if only one thing were changed. A couple dozen fanfics could be written exploring all the times that one conversation could've made all the difference. Thanks for hashing this out with me in so many discussions! You know I couldn't have done it without you gals. :)

Is it my birthday? Two Callisto stories so closely together!

What a wonderful little story! Gah. S2 and 3 angst, they are the gifts that keep on giving. So many tiny moments that are powerful, so many aspects to explore.

The pokey stick is away, yet close by. So keep up the stories that break our heart and makes us smile at the same time.

And yes, drunk Jim is adorable.
