I am ridiculously in love with this story, I'm telling you. I've tried imagining Jim meeting Roy again, and I've tried imagining Jim meeting Pam's parents, but I've never tried imagining Jim meeting Roy again and meeting Pam's parents at the same time [which is silly because obviously it's a possibility - they were part of each other's lives for so long], without Pam as support because she's going through a phase where she wants her dad to be alright and maybe that would involve going back to a time when she was still with Roy. Obviously she still loves Jim [like when she clearly considered taking that walk with him for a nanosecond] but right now she's more comfortable with Roy, and as much as that hurts, and as much as I want to punch his face in, I think this is good. Maybe I just like the idea of angst with a clearly fluffy ending...somewhere.

I love that the people Jim is most comfortable with at this point are Pam's parents, who I would expect would be a little tighter about this new guy. I like that it's not what I expected. I love how Allison Beesly is, in general, especially how she makes Jim miss Pam who's right inside. Oh, my heart; this is wonderful. I love it. [apparently I like pain in my heart, which is what this show has done to me.]

Anyway, you're doing an amazing job, and I feel for Jim. [who you've mentioned as Jim instead of in first-person a couple of times in this chapter, I think.] I can't wait to see where this goes. Please make Roy even more of a douche and Pam be Pam again, because I miss her almost as much as Jim does. Yes, that much.

Author's Response: Moofoot thank you, thank you for such an awesome review!! I think you're right...I did flub some of the first person in this last chapter...that's what I get for posting so late at night. I'll go back and fix that soon.

I think you are ABSOLUTELY right on about how Pam is feeling in regards to Roy being what's "comfortable" right now. Clearly in love with Jim, but Jim represents at least to some degree "newness" and Roy is a throw-back to her dad being A-ok. ...I too want to bash Roy's face in however, and Jim seemed pretty damn close at the end of Chapter 3 there! I suppose we shall see....maybe he's a sympathetic douche...a douche -- but perhaps a sympathetic one...time will tell.

Thanks again for reading and reviewing. So, so awesome!

Oh, I adore this; it's quiet and normal and completely in-character, yet it has a new kind of life to it that I can probably credit to the way you write this as well as the way they are. We don't see much of this on the show, and we certainly don't see much of them being engaged and in love on the show, and I love getting this chance - I really, really love it.

Loved Jim's thought processes and the fact that not liking Roy is more of a reflex than it is something he really wants; he knows he has Pam but there's still the automatic reaction that gets him. And I adore Pam, too - especially since I can see in love in practically every mode of action of hers. It's nice. I really wish I saw more of this on the show [and the thing is if they do get more Jim/Pam on the show, I can imagine them quoting this fic, because it's that realistic and in-character - am I getting repetitive? I feel like I'm getting repetitive.]

Can't wait for more!!

Author's Response: wow, thanks so much. I love reviews like yours because it really kind of even makes me think differently about my own writing. Its so nice to see how other people interpret what you put on the page. These are the kind of moments I long to see from PB&J but it being a faux doc & those two being so private at work I think makes it doubtful we\'ll see alot of them so that\'s where the world of fic comes into play!!! :)

OK, so I avoided this story for a while because it was still being written and I'm scared of stories that are still being written when they have words like loss in the summary - and when it was completed, I just forgot about it completely. Then I found some of your other fics and clicked on your profile and I ended up at this story, a couple of hours ago.

This is gorgeous. I absolutely adore the realistic, wonderful way you drew both Jim and Pam out of Scranton - the beautiful way you characterised not just the two of them but even their parents (the Halperts especially were fantastic) - it's so refreshing to see Jim/Pam in the future with problems but it's not angsty for the sake of angst so much as it's an exploration of what they may be going through - they have their fights but you can never doubt that they love each other, you know? And I've read enough fics to feel genuinely depressed about how dark they're written, their love, but you never even approached that area - in that way you stayed true to the show in a way that fit, and this story was freaking brilliant because of that.

The way you've written this is beautiful, too, in that I never got the feeling that this was written so much as it was told, and even then I found things that I loved, like a turn of phrase here or a bit of humour there.

I was not expecting this at all when I started reading this story, but I feel like I've travelled with them and I feel accomplished and I also feel a little sad that this is the end. I guess what I'm trying to say to you, Sweetpea, is that I'll miss this story (heh) even though I've only known it for so long.

Going in my favourites and staying there until the end of time. I haven't reviewed a story in god knows how long, and it hopefully shows how head over heels I am about this one. (: Basically - gorgeous. And lovely.

Author's Response:

Wow, I am just speechless, but a review likes this deserves a thoughtful (not ZOMGWOW!!!!111!!!!) response.

This story was  huge undertaking for me when I started it.  I had it outlined and I really liked the storyline and I felt comfortable with it, because I know that world so well.  Buffalo's my hometown, I went to Buff State, I lived on Lafayette, and I had many magical visits to Allentown.  But I hadn't written anything substantial in a long, long time and  I had no idea how this story would be received.  Would people think it was stupid or unrealistic to have them move to Buffalo?  I was nervous.

So, when I read your review today after this story's been hanging around the archive awhile, I can't tell you how much that meant to me.  And to read that you feel like it was "told" rather than written - wow.  And it came on a day when I was struggling with a new chapter in a new story so it was a big vote of confidence when I really needed it.

Thank you so much for doing this - so thoughtful, moofoot.  I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, Jim, you know what? Fuck Pam. Please. :D

I love this story - I don't think I've ever told you, but I adore the basis and where you're taking the whole thing - the way Pam does not fight what is wrong, but rather is fighting what she thinks she immensely dislikes, and the way this whole thing started from acting but really loathing each other to the core - I don't know, I love it. And the sexual tension is about ten thousand times hotter now, so thank you!

I'm really enjoying this. Can't wait for the not-so-angsty things! Pam has so apologising to do. Or something.

I absolutely adore this - probably the best Jim-with-a-guitar fics I've ever read - especially since I get kind of put off when everyone implies he's terrible at his music. :P

But this was really marvelously written - the songs you've chosen are just right, the way you get both the characters is just right - I loved the way you have him putting it down, saying it's no big deal, because I can see him doing it, and I can feel why Pam doesn't like that - she's been through the same thing. Just - the entire thing is just [pardon the pun] pitch-perfect, and it practically oozes it. I can't telly why it's perfect - it just is. And I enjoyed reading it thoroughly.

Also, Jim playing While My Guitar Gently Weeps may be one of the sexier things I have ever imagined, yesplz. :D

Forget great job for a first time fic - this was a great job, period. I loved it.

Author's Response:

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it so much.

I like to think Jim would be/is good at whatever he does--he's a great salesman, he's good looking, everyone loves him (Pam and David Wallace said so), he's great at basketball, he even co-organized The Office Olympics. So why would guitar be any different?

Yeah, if I saw him play While My Guitar Gently Weeps, my brain would probably break from sexy overload.

Oh, fuck, was this brilliant or brilliant? I loved the way you've written Jim - not a wuss like people tend to write him, but raw, desperate, despite all that he feels. Goodness. Moments of this made me laugh, moments of this made me bite my lip, moments of this make me want to cry, and moments of this make me want to do all at once - perfect Office, perfect Jim, and, in fact - perfect all-around. I loved this so much, you have no idea. I am adding this to my favourites right now.

I worship this kind of story - fast but thorough, and it makes me feel [TWSS]. And I enjoyed reading every bit of it.

This is probably one of my favourite post-finale fics so far - if not my favourite. Absolutely lovely. I adore the imagery, the characterisations - her insecurities, and her pains, and her missing him and wanting him to disappear - and how when she sees him she's just happy and it's all in all pretty much one of the most gorgeous things I have ever read. Even the smallest characters have lovely details, and you see and feel so many things at once. You hurt for Pam while wanting to slap her into sense at the same time.

Even the last third, in the rain - I could almost smell it, along with her frustrations and his anxiety and - just - oh you have reduced me to talking crap. :D

I adored this, so much. Every single part of it. Gorgeous. Brilliant. I am going to read this again and again, I am sure of it. I wish I could just tell you how and why exactly I love it as much as I do - just know that I do.

Author's Response:

wow! what a compliment.  there has been some really beautiful writing since thurs night, so i thank you.

i think being apart can be so difficult, especially when pam's never really gone away.  i almost titled this: pam's spring break.  because i think she'll go through a lot of changes and i wanted to reflect how difficult it is to be the leaver in a long-distance rship.  i think most of it it's in one's mind, though, and i hope this fic showed that.  that as difficult as it is to be apart, and maybe she even likes it, but at the end of the day she really loves jim, and that trumps all.

the end scene was really important to me.  i'm glad you thought it worked.

this is such lovely feedback!  thank you so much.  i'm so flattered...

This is beautiful. One of my favourite things to notice and to note about characters is their quirks - that's what makes them unique, and that's exactly what made your Pam and even your Jim stand up and out, as lively individuals who aren't codependent but enjoy and love spending time with or communicating with the other. I absolutely love how you've written them - Pam is adorable and friendly and happy, and Jim is adorable and sweet and in love. And some of the passages made me melt as much as some of the others made me grin [a lot of them did both at the same time].

Loved this. The character in this has easily made this one of my favourite hey-Pam's-in-NYC! fic - probably because the how will their relationship survive?! melodrama has been avoided completely. ;)

I could tell you a lot more about why I love this but I feel I'm getting tedious already!! :D So I'll stop here and tell you that this is amazing. Can't wait for more!

I took my time with reading this because I needed to take note of how beautifully you've written this - taking a character that we've seen and/or heard of maybe five times at most, used for comic relief, and creating this world around him that is rich, realistic and unforgiving, and so believably Schrute. I think it's safe to say I was right to do that, because I am awed. Every bit of this was gorgeously written, and every bit of Mose was gorgeously defined, and if I think about it properly I know this is easily one of the [if not the absolute] best fic in the fandom. I love how you incorporate things from the show into this - the Schruteness of this world is unbelievable. You are brilliant.

I will specially mention, though, that I think you're the first person to ever make me tear over fanfiction. The first. The third chapter made me cry; I was convinced that considering you'd killed characters already in the previous chapters, you wouldn't give the poor guy a break. ;)

If I don't get any indication of any of this in the show, I think I'll be disappointed! My favourite fic on the nets in a very long time. Thank you for coming out from under whatever rock you'd been under and posting this.

I don't feel this review has done any of this epic fic justice! hah.

who loved you now and loved you then - I have to tell you, I probably can't listen to that verse of the song the same way for a while. And considering I love the song to bits and listen to it often...thanks. :P The other songs haven't come to me just yet, but I'll be rereading this often so I'm sure I'll get there! ...eventually.

This was gorgeous. I'm very uneven about reviewing your stories, because more often than not they blow me away - there's something gorgeous about the way you write, and I love that you can do that and keep them so perfectly in-character, too. This chapter had introspection and quieter Pam moments and all of it rang true - confusion, anger, disappointment, etc. And the last paragraph made me want to hit something, mostly because I can imagine it happening and I know Beesly is better now after trying to be on her own but maybe if she'd turned that key?

Either way - beautiful, as usual, and I'll be recommending this like crazy to anyone who'll listen, also as usual. (: You are brilliant, and I am immensely jealous of your writing skillz. I want to throw away anything I've ever tried!

Can't wait for your last chapter. :D

Author's Response: Hey, moot, let us know when you find more and thank you for your feedback. I wanted to at least touch on how angry Pam surely would have been when she found out that Jim left. I think it\'s odd that it seems she didn\'t make an attempt to contact him right after his transfer, and, surely, anger was driving part of that decision, don\'t you think? This was gorgeous, beautifully written. and absolutely heartbreaking. I'd go more into detail but I don't think I can.

Fantastic, though. Wonderful. In-character but stretched to the extremes of their emotions - you never lose a beat. The way you contrasted the pain with that happiness in the alternating passages is beautiful. And you've made me ache for Jim like I've never ached before. :/ It would be easier to write from Pam's perspective, I think, in this sort of situation? To make it hit harder? but you handled Jim's perfectly.

And I adore the way you wrote this, too - simple, short, and beautiful. It was great to read and notice the way you wrote it as much as it killed me to read what you wrote. (Also, you made me think of asymptote graphs without wincing. :P) And that's skill. That's beautiful. You astound me. And thank you for that little bit of hope at the end. It was both believable, bittersweet and hopeful, and - just - also? You made me cry. I haven't cried reading a fic in god knows how long (see: never), so congratulations.

Basically, this entire thing was beautiful, from end to end, and whatever I can say won't do it justice, so I'll just shut up here and sob. And read it over again. I just wish I could make sure you know it better...if that makes sense.

Author's Response:

Asymptote graphs! So that's what they're called! The extent of my research was looking at one web site and it just said "other functions" and then there was too much math going on and I gave up. I mean, obviously I knew the concept still from high school algebra, but I'd forgotten the name.

Anyway, I'm so glad you enjoyed the story. I was aching for Jim too as I was writing it. And I always knew there would be that bit of hope at the end, but I'm glad it felt believable because I really was worried that it would be too abrupt and wouldn't fit with the rest of the story.

Jim's life being broken and being put back together with pieces (that you mention and detail) is actually kind of one of the best things I have ever, ever read.

I'm sorry, I'm spamming you. I'll leave it for another two weeks before I review you again.

Author's Response:

Okay, I'm ashamed to admit that I just cyber-stalked you a little bit to figure out how many continents away you really are, but yeah, you are far away. (In case the really long flight didn't tip you off.)

You never have to apologize for multiple reviews, in fact you sort of made my night. ;) Mostly, I'm so glad there are people like you out there who really respond to this kind of writing. It's not like this is the first time I've written something this way, it's just that when I write fanfic I often feel like I have to tell a traditional story in a traditional way and that's sometimes a bit limiting.

Anyway, thanks for loving it. :) I'll respond to your other review in the morning.

What a fantastic way of looking at that. This is gorgeous in its descriptions and perfect characterisation, and when she imagined a little boy stumbling out of Jim's old room, I think I was just as sold as Pam. LoveFool, you never disappoint. (: I adored this.

Author's Response: Aw, Moofoot...what incredibly kind words. I love the word you've chosen here "evolve"...I think that's exactly what went down with Pam's emotions from the moment she got out of the car until the "you bought me a house".  I'm so glad you thought of it in the same way. Thanks so much for your wonderful review.

From one video game nerd to another - I need to tell you that I think I'm in love with you. I cracked up too hard because I recognised too much of what was happening here, all the way down to partnering with your one enemy to rule the (virtual) world.

I need to find out what this Diablo thing is, damn it.

Author's Response: I admit that I group with now (and in the past) far too many people that I really can\'t stand now for the good of progression raiding. Once in a while I mis-type and insult someone publicly when it was meant to be private. Hey, I can\'t help it that the guy really does make me want to punch myself in the face repeatedly.\r\n\r\nAnd there is currently a 20 minute preview of Diablo 3 Blizzard\'s put out that has me so excited I can barely stand it (though the release date is 1-2 years down the road still-we pay dearly for the quality of a Blizzard game). :)

Summary: If Dwight hadn’t knocked that basket off David Wallace’s roof, everything would still be the same. Right? An AU look at the end of season 3, diverging from "Cocktails."

I haven't written a review on this site for ages (may be well over a year, I don't even know) but I just have to tell you how much I'm in love with how you've written Jim/Karen. The emotions are real and genuine and I would root for them all the way - in fact I was near tears near the end of the second chapter because they were finally being the fantastic couple they were fully capable of being, and then that happened! AGH.

I love Jim/Pam, but you're one of the very few authors I've seen that make Jim/Karen both believable and people I can be 100% behind - your first chapter did a beautiful job of it. And the wonderful characterisation aside (because Jim's transformation to wanting her is so believably done), your dialogue is great, and your writing in general is just gorgeous - not overflowing with artistic things and unnecessary flair, but smooth and lovely, not at all self-conscious but natural and kind of beautiful in that way.

I've just enjoyed this so much, and I was bummed with the J/K divide at the end of the second chapter. I have to know if you're planning on keeping them together? Do you have more fic with them being the end-game, pre-The Job? I have to look more of your fic up; this is just fantastic.

I hope the lack of reviews on this site doesn't discourage you, is what I meant to say. basically. It's a Jim/Pam-dominated site, right? This story is so good, though; I love how easy you make it for me to want Jim/Karen to be together without the whole Pam-obstacle in S3 - I like these stories much more than J/K getting together after Jim/Pam break up in the future or something, because it strikes me as much less plausible.

Anyway, I'm with this story all the way. (unless it doesn't end J/K. i bet you don't hear that everyday.) Keep up the gorgeous writing!

(And I'm so terribly sorry for how crazy-long this is. I don't think I even articulated correctly what I love about this and how much I adore it.)

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I really appreciate the effort you put into this review, especially since it brought you out of review-retirement! I'm also really happy to hear that the dialogue is working--writing it is one of those tricky areas that I've been really caught up on and I wasn't sure at all how it was turning out. I'm going to answer some of your questions through a message via your MTT profile, if you don't mind, because these responses always appear as a block of text. Thanks again and I hope you keep reading!

This made me smile and smile - so warm and sweet, and incredibly well-written! The adoration Jim and Pam have for each other and for (the incredibly cute) Lucy is so tangible, and that makes me happy in a way I haven't really felt reading fic in a while. :) Thank you so much for this.
