Fascinating. We get to see so little of Roy's life in canon (and none of his inner life), and I appreciate you digging into a little bit more of what he's thinking at this moment where he's deeply unappealing. I also think this strikes a good balance: this reasoning behind his reactions makes emotional sense and allows you to feel for him a bit, but it's not like you've asked us to see Roy as some poor misunderstood creature, either - he's still being noticeably self-absorbed.
(Actually pretty striking reading this in light of Pam's own concerns about her partner's desire for a different life down the line. Gets me to thinking.)
But moreover, I love the idea that Roy has a Jim of his own! Such a different use of poor put-upon Madge. There's a grand post-Pam love story waiting to happen there.

Yes, it would be easy to just see Roy as the villain in Pam's story, but I haaate when a movie or book or TV show has the other half of the couple be so awful it's ridiculous to imagine them together. Roy and Pam got together when they were young, and he just didn't grow in the way he needed to, relation-wise.
(This fic actually made it to the actress who played Madge, via another reader -- and without me being aware of it -- way back in the day. She loved it, but it caused DRAMA in the LiveJournal community, because this was when fanfic was seen as practically illegal because of copyright laws. Oy. Now we live in a world where Twilight fanfiction got turned into Fifty Shades of Grey.)

One of the things I'm looking forward to in the new season is seeing more of Roy. I'm interested to see what Pam really sees in him. I know there's more to his character than what we've seen so far. Nice job of capturing the nuances of what Roy is like away from the cameras and other people. Aw, he and Madge would be cute, even if it's the most canonically improbable couple ever.
Author's Response: Though Madge having a crush on him is sorta canon, as the actress has in her MySpace profile that she has a crush on an "engaged guy" at work. Roy having a crush on Madge? Not so probable... but she WOULD make him happier than Pam.

I finally got to read this..that was really cute. I can totally see a conversation like this happening. It would be funny if all the time that Pam had HER office friend, Roy had HIS.
