"Because they sell cologne at French whorehouses...?"  This whole exchange made me laugh out loud!  The steam and tension factor is getting to me though.  Throw us a bone--please! :)  Excellent chapter by the way.  Very visual.

Author's Response:

LOL -- I'll be throwing you a bone verrrry soon.  (And uh...yeah, that is so totally what she said.)

Thanks so much for the review!

when he turns around and sees her, things will likely shift. Significantly.  And it's in his pants!  Wait, what?

Author's Response:

Oh my GOD!  Don't DO that -- what if I'd been taking a sip of my Diet Rite or something??

Okay, shame on you, Alex; that is so NOT what I meant.  Wait, you're one of the resident boys aren't you?  Figures... :oD

Things are catching on fire!!!!  I love that you end it with Jim staring boldly at Pam.  It's like anything can happen and Pam is totally losing it. And the dancing... oh the dancing.... I just realized it's been so very long since we've seen them actually touch on screen, so it was very nice to be reading it here. Fantastique (as the women in the French whorehouse would say ;-)

Author's Response:

Wow - it has been a while since we've seen them really touch on the show, hasn't it?  Well, with the exception of the hug in the BD flashback (which made me gasp out loud, like it was this huge deal, LOL).

You and your French whorehouse friends, I swear....hee.

Thanks for everything!

Whew. Wine brings out the best in us, right? I like how you're exploring the fact that Pam knew on some level that Jim had feelings for her the whole time. I think that the main reason she stayed with Roy for so long was that it was her plan - she wanted to be that girl who marries her high school boyfriend and has 2.5 kids. But that's not what life has in store for her :-)

Anyways, you are very good at ratcheting up the tension. And I love that you included Meredith. Poor girl gets no lines on the show and isn't even very present in the fanfic world either! I'm excited to see where you go with this. One question, though: do you plan on this being backstory for their current relationship? Only because I can't see them holding out for years if they had this kind of sexual tension back then!

Author's Response:

First of all, what a thoughtful review - thanks so much, seriously.  It's such a treat to see what people liked/didn't/had questions about.

I'm of the opinion that Pam did know on some level that he had feelings for her (though I don't think she realized how deeply they ran until he told her), and I think you're totally right about her having that preconceived "plan" and being determined to stick to it, no matter what.

Yeah, I wanted to flesh Meredith out just a little; I think she could be a lot of fun, actually.  And as for the question you posed -- it's funny, because I'd been debating about that as I was initially planning this...and I think you're right that if the tension had been at this level for that long, they wouldn't have held out as long as they do.

But I'm not planning on taking it so far that they won't be able to go back AT ALL (though I'll take it as far as I can without crossing that line, heh).  It's sort of like the Away From the Cameras thing I wrote last summer -- toward the end of it, they'd get tipsy and kiss every other chapter, LOL, and I had them wave it off as just being drunk -- which, as I conceded in my author's notes, was NOT plausible (i.e. an occasional drunken kiss between those two as not a big deal).  Though, as Starry Dreamer pointed out to me - after the kiss in GWH, she's quick to say, "Maybe we're just drunk," so....

Anyway, thanks so much for your review!

Whoa.  You weren't kidding about bringing the steam.  (A few glasses of wine and I would be thinking about what Jim smells like, too.)  Great karaoke details.

Author's Response: LOL - yeah, I think that'd be all it would take for me to get all swoony on him.  (As if I wouldn't be that way all the time....) So glad you liked it!  Thanks, as always, for the review!

Here's the thing: writing a 'sexy' scene isn't that hard (no TWSS intended.) But communicating actual desire in words on a page - that's something else all together. And, damn, you do that so well here - how do you do that, anyway? It's like casting some kind of spell over the reader.

And loved Michael here too - this line made me laugh out loud: "It is...oh my god, do you think he'll take his pants off?" Somehow that just sums up both their reactions to him, in so many situations. Anyway, This scene has the perfect balance of heady, awkward, funny, giddy, sexy...the whole Jim/Pam S2 package. Is it selfish that I hope you have a really uneventful next day or two so you can update soon?

Author's Response:

Wow - coming from you, that is such a compliment (because I tell you, NOBODY does the sexy steam better than you, my dear!).   I just have such a blast writing about them pre-season three...so much lovely UST to play around with.

And the next chapter's all done; I'm just picking and picking at it.  But I'll post soon!  (And I'm looking forward to your latest, BTW....)

Thanks so much for the review!

What a great story to get the day started!  Seriously, I was smiling so much while I read this that my kids kept asking what I was smiling about.  Oooh this was so great, I just can't get over it. I just wish that they could have danced some more, but I loved that Jim was just staring at Pam.  Will we have steam in the next chapter? (crosses fingers)  I am eagerly anticipating an update.

Author's Response:

Ohhh - I was sitting there reading your review with an enormous grin myself.  :O)   And I will say this: There'll be more dancing, and yes, the remaining chapters will be way heavy on the steam.  Heh heh.  :o)

I don't know if this was intentional or not but it was all just so junior high.  Like picking teams in gym class.  Can't wait to find out what Pam wants to meet about.  Heh.

And excellent Michael.  You've got him nailed!  (That's what she said.)

Author's Response:

OMG - that was intentional, and it makes me so happy that you caught it!  (I was worried that it wouldn't translate.)  In fact, the chapter that's coming has Pam reflecting that she feels like she's in junior high again (no joke).

This still has that great vintage S2/Jim/Pam  feeling...full of possibility. They really feel like confederates here - I miss that! (Smoochy-face aside, so hope to see it back on the menu come Sept.)  And how much did I want to stuff a sock in Toby's mouth? Okay, both Jim and I are all anticipation...I have a feeling this is gonna be goooood. Is it 6:20 yet? ;-)

Author's Response:

So your saying that it has the "vintage season 2" feel is such a huge compliment!  I wanted to stuff a sock in poor Toby's mouth as well, but...there are other, nonviolent means of solving the dilemma, LOL.

The steam's in the next chapter, promise.  :o)

Thanks for reviewing, my friend!

I'm really enjoying the alternating POV.  Love the small moments between Jim and Pam, and really who doesn't love that?  Sorta disappointed they don't get to bunk together, but hey, it's early in the story. Heh. Plenty of time to get Meredith drunk and passed out somewhere, not in their room. Hehehehe.

Seriously though, great story.  Love the characterizations. Can't wait to see where you're taking us all with this.

So far only one thing missing... *smooch*  :-)! <---Smiley!Jim's review.

Author's Response:

Aw, thank you!  And yeah, I kind of hated to not have them bunk together, but I couldn't come up with a plausible scenario in which they'd actually end up assigned to the same room.  That said...well, there are ways around everything, and we fanfic writers are pretty crafty at finding them, hee.

As for the smooch, Smiley!Jim....patience, my pet.  LOL

Well, you've done it again! Excellent, excellent job! You really have all the characters nailed (I know, TWSS. But you really do).

Is it wrong that I got a little mad at Toby when he suggested sharing rooms based on gender?

Author's Response:

Thank you!  And yeah, as I was writing that scene, I kept trying to figure out a semi-plausible way that Jim and Pam would have to share a room...but I figured even Michael wouldn't force that kind of issue, LOL.  (This is not to say that it won't happen anyway, mwahahaha!)

Talk about heartache.  Wow.  I love that you put a flashback within the flashback story.  It was so painfully real.  Pam's lie of omission until the last moment when she finally had to reveal her engagement.  Jim's utter Jimness.  Good ol' Dwight.

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you liked it!  (And I find that I'm fond of writing flashbacks for some weird reason...)  "Jim's utter Jimness" -- brilliant, brilliant phrase.  :o)

This is so funny!  You've captured the exact tone of a Jim/Dwight exchange.  I love this:

Were you raised in an Amish community 43.6 miles away from the nearest populated area?"

"Oh my god." Jim's eyes widen, and he draws back a little. "How did you know that?"

Author's Response:

Such a treat to see a review from you - just read your latest (and was absolutely DELIGHTED to see that you'd posted something new), and it was amazing.  I'm glad you liked the Jim/Dwight exchange; there are so many authors around here (yourself included) who seem to just excel at capturing everybody's voices (not just Jim & Pam's), yet I always find it so daunting.  So it's always nice to hear someone say the voices rang true.

Thanks again for the review (and the awesome new fic) --

This is excellent! I was really glad to see that you'd (finally) updated. I love how you illustrate Jim and Pam's first two weeks together, and all the ensuing angst/denial. I can't wait for more updates! :)

Author's Response:

Thanks so much!  I'm always fascinated to think about their first few weeks (after initially meeting), more so after Jim's deleted talking head from The Client.  The notion that he fell in love with her that first day at Cugino's (which I assume he did, because in the TH he says, "She was in love with someone ELSE") is just amazing to me.  Sigh.  :o)

Will be updating pretty soon - thanks again for the review!

GUH.  Killing me in the way you do so well.  I love, love, love that you went back to the Roy days.  You bring the angst so well, and that was certainly an 'angst era.'  So wonderful and looking forward to more.

Author's Response: I cannot tell you how much of a thrill it is to hear you say that you're glad I took it back to the Roy days!  I'm a glutton for the angst - always have been - but given the semi-resolution we got with this year's finale, I see exploring the pre-camera days as something bittersweet.  Really appreciate your review (and am off to read your latest in a sec!)
