Fascinating. Were the first four all the same alternate universe then? I was a little confused by the abrupt switch to "now" in the final vingnette. Still, I really enjoyed this a lot. Fun to play with.
Author's Response: Thanks! No, I didn't mean for them to be in the same AU. Basically the first one is if Jim had made a move on that first "date", the second one is if Pam had broken up with Roy ahead of time, three is if she'd reciprocated on Casino Night, the fourth if Jim and Karen had broken up before they did and the last one is as it is now. Sorry for the confusion, but I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway!

yikes. this hurts to read. they are all really good, but I feel cheated that there are four that make me feel like I was punched in the face while I was sleeping, and only one that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

oh dear - how lovely. i have to confess liking their doomed efforts best. there's something bittersweet and wistful about them - v. irresistable. wonderful job.
Author's Response: Thanks! It was actually kinda fun to explore the dark, angsty road with these two, simply because I knew I could bring them right back to the present unscathed.

I love all the scenarios, and the one where they did get together was perfect. Pam proposing to Jim is fabulous. Fabulous, I say!

You know that principle in quantum physics that says for every action in this world, all the possible other outcomes of that action play out in other worlds in parallel dimensions? That's what this story felt like: peering through some sort of interdimensional window into what might have happened; what could have been (as your title so aptly says).
You weren't kidding about those first four times. Oy. They were indeed painful to read, but each completely plausible in their own way. Perhaps that's what made them so difficult to read: knowing that Jim and Pam are always one bad decision away from chaos. Okay, so that may not be the message you intended me to take away from this, 'cause it's sort of a bleak way of looking at things. But trust me, I'm not depressed by this story at all. That last vignette made up for everything. And if anything, the previous four just made the last one all that sweeter. :)

Jim and Pam are always one bad decision away from chaos. LOL, I guess that is true in its own way. I think that their relationship is like the creation of life on earth: everything had to be just so for it to work out at all. Which may be a bit too over dramatic for a fictional couple, but you get my point.
You know, I love quantum physics. No seriously, I have this book that I can't read for too long because it'll give me a headache, but principles like that are what make me continue reading.
