Blanca! How remiss am I never to have reviewed this, because it's gorgeous and heartfelt and hurts a little to read. I love the parallels with classic movies and this part in particular:
At least Rick and Ilsa had Paris. What do they have? Pretendonitis? Office Olympics? A non-date on the roof? Swaying? Sure, there was that one kiss at the Dundies, but she was drunk and "We'll always have Chili's" doesn't quite have the same poetic ring to it.
And this:
As he watches Pam and Roy drive away, waving as enthusiastically as he can manage, he thinks about the end of the movie and wonders if he'd have the strength to let her get on that plane. He honestly doesn't know what he'd do, and the thought terrifies him.

Author's Response: It's callisto! You know I'm a fan of your work, so your kind comments really mean a lot to me. My heart hurts for S2 Jim too, but it's a beautiful kind of pain, isn't it? And knowing that it gets better helps a little. I really wanted the parallels to seem natural and not too forced, so it's great to hear you say that. Thanks for taking the time to review.

This story was really, really well-crafted! The narrative flowed so smoothly and you managed to incorporate the old movie themes seemlessly.

I was hoping somebody would do this challenge, and you've done it so very well. Perfectly believeable, I think your Jim thoughts are spot on. (I always know when somebody's written season 2 Jim well when I want to give him a big hug and tell him to just wait a couple of years, it'll be okay.
I particularly loved this line:

Blanca, this was superb. You had me hooked as soon as you mentioned The Philadelphia Story. To then get into the whole Casablanca plot? I'm swooning. What a great idea!!! Two of my absolute favorites. In fact, I've been itching to watch them and suspect I will today--no more excuses :)
Anyway, some of my favorites, starting with this fantastic paragraph: He wonders if she's playing him, if on some level she knows the effect she has on him, and whether that level is shallow or deep. It is then that he thinks of Humphrey Bogart, wondering the same thing about Ingrid Bergman as she begged him to hand over the letters of transit that would allow her and her husband to escape the Nazis and flee to Portugal. Wow. Great parallel.

If this inspires even one person to go out discover or re-discover these great movies, then I feel like my work here is done. :D Once I had the snowstorm idea (from the challenge), it was surprisingly easy to come up with the parallel. This is simply breath-taking. The parallels with the (wonderful, wonderful) movie are subtly drawn out and deftly managed, and all of the details feel absolutely true to life. He tried to love her enough to let her go, as we now know, but Roy was no Victor Lazlo and jet skis aren't the Resistance, and this time we'll get our happy ending. Thank you for letting me "get caught up in someone else's story". It was a delight.

To quote a line from one of her stories, "I suck at subtle." But I am glad that you enjoyed this, and I really appreciate the comment.
