Yikes. Rough day for Karen - although admittedly here one she brought on herself by being wildly judgmental. (Although for the most part not necessarily unfairly so, which is interesting - with the exception of Pam, this does feel a lot like how a normal person suddenly dropped into Dunder Mifflin Scranton might react.)
It is nice to see even S3 Jim at one of his less pro-Pam moments still being willing to stand up for her. *sigh* This would've saved us all a lot of pain.
Author's Response:
I obviously wrote this one before the branches merged, and I really didn't have a sense of Karen at all (I think I did her justice in subsequent fics). I think you've picked up on what my intention was, though-- that someone coming in cold to the Scranton branch might really have been put off by all of the shenanigans. Also, Jim was never as aloof from all of it as he tried to pretend.
It would have been nice to dispatch Karen so easily, but in hindsight I guess
I am content with what we really got.

Sometimes I have dreams of things that I want to happen. For example, if I've misplaced something and have been looking for it for days, I will magically find it in my dreams.
This story reminds me of that feeling. It is everything I wanted to happen for Pam . . . and Jim, all wrapped up and sweetly resolved in one fell swoop. Ahhhhh.
And yes, I am very late to this party, but I have to express my appreciation for this happy moment, thanks to you! :)
Author's Response:
Oh my goodness! This makes me so happy!
I'm so glad you found this old thing and enjoyed it. Thank you for taking the time to comment. It warmed my heart.

"the softer side of sears." Found it!
and while this is well-written... it's just SO out of character for karen.
Author's Response: Thanks for saying it is well-written! In my defense, you can see that I wrote it before we really had any idea what was in character for Karen. Thanks for reading this very old story!

Ha! Karen sucks! What was odd is I could so see this happening, even though it totally didn't. Because Karen did look down on all of them and certainly Pam. So this totally could have happened. But instead they had to torture us with the real S3.
Author's Response: HA! The real S3 was hard, wasn't it? But the payoff was SO worth it!

Oh, Cordelia Chase flashbacks.
Such a bitch.
High five.
Author's Response:
Five back at ya. Thanks so much! (And Cordy will always be the Queen B(itch) to me!)

If only.
I wish we'd been able to witness Jim put Karen in her place. It would have been great to see Jim defending Pam. (But now I have seen it, so I guess it's okay.)
Author's Response: Wow, thanks for finding this old story! It would have been fun for it to go this way, but I'm glad to give you the alternate view!

i caught it...softer side of sears!!!
episode 1.1
i used to love buffy
Author's Response: Good eye! Yeah, I guess the two shows have little in common- except good writing and great characters! :) Thanks for reading!

Whoa! Karen hurt my... uh, I mean Pam's feelings. When she started going off about Pam's looks, I actually cringed. Nice work!
Author's Response: Thank you! I know this is all wild speculation, but I'm holding out hope that we can rid ourselves of Karen this easily. (Because I actually like her, which makes me nervous!)

It was wonderful. The perfect answer to my Karen!hatred!
Thanks. I hope The Powers that be use your script!
Author's Response: Oh, thank you so much! I don't hate Karen, exactly; it's more that she makes me nervous and I want to be rid of her before she causes too much trouble.

Loved it.
I love that you mention Jim & Karen were CASUALLY dating; and then the breakup (:
wonderful :D
Author's Response: Thanks! Yes, clearly I want there to be no mistake. Jim does not love Karen. He kinda likes her OK for now (until she busts out the previously-unknown heinous bitch side, of course!). Hee.

Wow. So I don't know that I can express this, but I'll do my best: We've seen so many sides of Jim, so much evidence of his kindness, that there's so little new to explore (not that reaffirmations of his kindness aren't wonderful, because they really are). But wow, his protectiveness of his "family" here is so touching - and especially his protectiveness of Pam. It also made me ache a little for Pam because she seems like she'd be so vulnerable to a catty girl like this, if that makes any sense. (And you know that if Karen comes to Scranton with Jim, Pam will be uber-threatened.)
So yes - loved this. Oh, and I have to confess: I laughed out loud at the softer side of Sears comment!
Author's Response:
Thank you so much- what a lovely comment! I agree that Pam would be vulnerable to this (although the fancy new Beesly might be less so). and Jim naturally gravitates to the White Knight role. I think he likes Karen, but he loves these people, and I believe he would feel this was a "proportional response" to an attack on them. Plus, it allowed me to rid us of the plague that is Karen! Win-win-win!
(Yeah, when I steal lines, I know how to steel good ones!)

I really enjoyed this lis! Karen is one of those characters that make me very nervous because I hate her even though I don't really have a reason to hate her, and I kind of like her even though I really really don't want to. So I like what you've done here in making her so blatantly catty because then I found myself getting just as defensive as Jim. Of course he would be the first to defend them all-especially Pam. Terrific job!
Author's Response: Thanks! I wanted to show that this was a hidden mean streak brought out by the craziness that Jim takes for granted (and actually loves) in Scranton. I'm not entirely sure I accomplished that, but if it makes you feel better about hating her, then my job here is done. :)

The "Sears" comment was from the Buffy pilot? Huh. I don't remember that at all.
Uh, anyways, dammit lis, now I'm going to be waiting for Karen to show her "true colors" every time I see her on screen! I always confuse your stories with cannon because the character voices are so perfect. Jim was fantastic!
Author's Response:
Cordelia throws that line at Willow, showing her true colors to Buffy (whom she's been sweet-talking up to that point). I  bitchy Cordelia.
Thank you, sweetie. I think Jim is relatively easy to write because the audience knows him so well. Pam is harder (you'll notice she's mute in this story!). As for Karen- I'm hoping she actually does show her true colors on the show so we can be rid of her and her stupid fun prettiness!
Date: October 22, 2006 11:07 pm Title: Chapter 1
I love this because it reminded me of how quickly and callously Jim dumped Katy - no one puts Pam in a (metaphorical) corner!
Author's Response: Oh, thank you! I actually had the Katy dumping in mind here, because we know Jim has it in him to just dump a girl cold like that. (And any reference to "Dirty Dancing" gets an automatic spot on my "favorite Reviews ever" list, just so you know). Thank you!
Date: October 22, 2006 10:27 pm Title: Chapter 1
Awesome! Catty Karen is awesome. I'd love to see something like this happen on the show, where Jim gets defensive in front of Karen. Mostly because I don't like Karen. And because this was wonderfully written.
Author's Response: I don't hate Karen; actually, I kind of like her and that makes me nervous, so I had to create a seriously nasty mean streak. We don't want Jim to be conflicted, right? Just cut to the chase- dump her and ride off into the sunset with our girl Pam!
Date: October 22, 2006 05:03 pm Title: Chapter 1
As a total Buffy addict, I say good for you for your theft. Also, loved that you made Karen such a bitch, I want her to be that way in Jim's eyes.
Author's Response: Meeee, toooo! Whatever it takes for Jim to see that Karen is not the right girl. Thank you!
Date: October 22, 2006 04:49 pm Title: Chapter 1
You have such an awesome way of putting words together and coming up with such great lines - like this one, "Jim recognized the truth of her assessment, but the vehemence of her disdain was shocking". Great chapter. I love how Karen's cattiness came out and how Jim defended his friends - and Pam. And I loved that Pam was in the doorway to hear it. I'd love to see more of this!
Author's Response:
Thank you so much. I love specific reviews, and yours are always so encouraging!
After this, all I can picture is lots of fluffy, jammy kissing and Karen pouting. Not very compelling, but awfully comforting!
Date: October 22, 2006 02:53 pm Title: Chapter 1
oh no, this can't be the end, i want more of this story! i can totally see a catty karen. i want to see her reaction to jim and pam! please? great short story :)
Author's Response:
Thanks! Actually, my great weakness as a writer is that I can't seem to sustain my plot very long- so this is about as long as my pieces get. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though! (Sorry!).
Date: October 22, 2006 10:42 am Title: Chapter 1
Oh, lis, amen! I love it when you get a bee in your bonnet. Mee-yow! Just great!
Author's Response:
I'd like to think of myself as a nice person, but writing Karen as a catty bitch came really, really easily. Hmmmm.
Hee. Thanks!!

I'm so attached to all the Scranton characters (and don't have much use for the Stamford ones yet) that I never really thought of any of them the way Karen does. Perhaps she has a (small) point, but any woman who knows Jim at all would never dare to insult any of them the way she just did. Especially Pam.
I'm sure we'll never see this on the show...but it made me happy just imagining it. What a quick, efficient way to deal with Karen.
Oh, and please tell me what the insult lifted from Buffy was...
Author's Response:
The "softer side of Sears" line was "borrowed" from the pilot episode of Buffy.
Yes, I decided that I had read/written enough of Jim gradually realizing that Karen wasn't the right girl for him. "Quick, efficient" and mean was the order of the day! :)
Thanks!

Karen's critiques sound like the UO thread at TWOP, especially Pam's. And I love you, and Jim, for sticking up for them. Hee.
Anyway, this was great. I can actually really see this happening on the show! :)
Author's Response: Yeah, I might have been lurking on that thread a bit. :) I don't think Karen will actually turn into such a shrew, but it was fun to write her this way! Thank you!
Date: October 22, 2006 05:39 am Title: Chapter 1
Amen, lis. Amen.
I can so see this happening. Maybe she wouldn't go as far as all that (and as a non-Buffy fan I have to say - that insult makes me wish I was!) but I can see her making an off-handed comment about Pam and Jim going ballistic.
If only....
Author's Response:
As we now know, Jim isn't nearly as over Pam as he might wish. I don't think it would take much for him to swing back into White Knight mode (and not just for her, but for all of them). Thanks!
Date: October 22, 2006 04:30 am Title: Chapter 1
Wow, you certainly dispensed with Potato Chip girl efficiently! I swear, as I was reading this, I was actually thinking 'how dare she!?!' Well done, and hooray Jim for sticking up for the Scranton crew (not just Pam) as I'm sure he actually would.
Author's Response: Jim is a part of that family; no one messes with family. I don't actually hate Karen, but I am ready to be rid of her. Isn't that the fun of fanfic? Bye, Karen! Hee. Thank you!
Date: October 21, 2006 11:13 pm Title: Chapter 1
God it would be so easy if Karen really were a bitch.
And I love whenever Jim is protective of his co-workers. Especially Pam. So wonderful job.
Author's Response: I love protective Jim, too, which is why it seemed so natural for this to be the ultimate rift between them. Of course, we have no evidence that Karen has this kind of bitchy streak, but...no evidence that she doesn't, right? :)
Author's Response: Oh, and thank you!
Date: October 21, 2006 10:50 pm Title: Chapter 1
So satisfying!!! I would love to see this play out. Really well done.
Author's Response: Thank you! It really scratched an itch for me, too.
