I obviously love this whole thing, but I really loved how you show Jim guarding himself after beach games. It was pretty obvious Pam felt something for him, but he had been burned before and couldn't risk doing it again which makes a LOT of sense.

And then there's this letter that is Jim trying to force closure on their relationship even though we all know he ain't over it. ;)

Can't wait for the next one!!

I don’t even know how to start this review because I try to avoid this pain at all costs. I’m not used to this. The way you write, I don’t think I *can* get used to this. Okay, let me explain exactly what hurt so bad.

The way you worked in Jim’s version of “fancy new Beesly” and the whole “evolving” thing was BRILLIANT. My jaw literally dropped when I read that. What a way to turn those words against him like that. Wow. WOW.

“I hope you find the person who is everything that you were to me, and you never settle for anything less.” Like. I wanted to sob when I read that and I want to sob after pasting that into this little box that can’t contain how much this hurt.

Still don’t get why people do this to themselves on purpose, but by GOD, you are SO good at this.

Ooooh, I'm glad so much that I know how his interview turned out. Otherwise, I'll be a sobbing mess right now.
But who am I kidding? There's a lump in my throat right now as I'm writing this.
"he's possibly moving to New York with his girlfriend, finishing the chapter in the book that was Jim and Pam." this line hurts so much.
And the letter... realization of how close Jim was to giving up and letting himself go hits hard.
Fantastic writing, Aly. I hope you'll give us some fluff too, won't you?

This was perfect.
I liked how Jim felt inspired to move on, because on the face of it- it seemed Pam was moving on too. He is committing towards himself to get over the hurt.
Letter was perfect purge he needed, something he felt but never would verbalize to anyone.

I agree about this scene - as someone who is (ducks) more of a S3 Jim sympathizer than the average bear, I think the extent to which Jim experiences things like Pam not calling and finding out Pam is dating as her third and fourth rejections is important to bear in mind. I'm glad you got into it.

It's an interesting take on Jim! I don't normally think of him as being this in touch with his desire to still be a part of Pam's life and with his pride in her - he comes across as in pain but still very kindly here in a way that I like. It's nice to see a Jim who is still fiercely invested in Pam's development during this really difficult and lonely moment in her life.

The description of him seeing Pam everyone in Stamford feels very real.

I think this a a great look into Jim's mind at this point in his life. This was when he still had the reminder to smile on his computer. Where he wasn't really getting along with anyone in Stamford or the like. To hear that Pam is dating again after no contact from her would hurt a lot I'm sure. So even though I feel bad for Jim here because he's hurting, you wrote it really well to convey all those feelings.

"I’m so proud of you for everything you are doing, I’m just sorry that you felt you couldn’t do it with me."

This will never not feel like a stab to the heart.

Poor sad, hurt, little Jim. Hang in there, buddy!

Oof that hurts. That really and truly must have felt like a sort of betrayal.
Poor Jim, for suffering like that. Poor Pam, for suffering too. Poor Kelly who caused that avalanche of suffering... but I love that you chose that moment. It needs more attention indeed.
Be damned forever that person who first decided that the comedy of situation is something funny!
I'm both anticipating and dreading the next chapter!

This is wildly cute. Definitely feels real to Jim's first day, and the details (the hair ruffling, him not having learned everyone's names yet) feel right. I thought there was just the right amount of hint that Pam's attracted to him too, and you did a good job of showing us how wildly he fell for her from the get go.

Plus I like this whole concept... it feels like it adds a certain richness to the Christmas card, that writing a handwritten note is a special thing to Jim and that he's chickened out giving it to her before.

"But now he is walking through his front door with an idiot smile on his face and looking for new jobs is the last thing on his mind."

STOP, NOW I HAVE AN IDIOT SMILE ON MY FACE.

"You in?" Bro. Stop.

"He put it in the inside pocket of his messenger bag; he would give it to her on Friday before asking her out to dinner that evening. During lunch on Thursday, he found out she was engaged. The letter was thrown out once he got home." I DID NOT NEED THIS KIND OF PAIN ON A MONDAY DID HE REALLY THROW IT OUT STOP

Oh, I love this very, very much. This was exactly what happened that first day and you can’t convince me otherwise.

First of all from the minute I read your chapter notes I loved this. I am constantly hearing songs and making them Jam songs.

Then you solved the conundrum of who started first. Brilliant. What a perfect solution. I was even watching The Secret the other day for research and this so jives with how it seemed to go down. If not, it’s how I’m seeing it.

The whole thing was just so seeable (like I could see it happening and wasn’t just reading). Loved!

(I think I’m supposed to say you killed me or something like that but i can’t seem to do that and don’t think I ever will).

Can’t wait to read the rest (and will you be tackling the most famous letter he ever wrote to her?)

Okay, the idea that Jim writes letters is romantic and endearing and I am HERE for it. I love, love, love this concept and am excited to read the rest of these letters.

And that ENDING. Oooof. So abrupt and heartbreaking and I hate you and love you for it. Simultaneously. Forever and ever. Amen.

Ma'am, why do you have to break my heart like this? It's not even noon on a Monday. I'm completely offended.

But I'm also in love with this and I think you're amazing!

The letter made me smile then immediately crushed me. I'm fine. It's fine. Ugh.

Can't wait for more!

This was so cute, and so heart-breaking! I really like the nice little touches of Jim wanting to be an astronaut and then in the NBA (especially given where he ends up), and Michael ruffling his hair and Meredith being Meredith lol. And the letter is perfection! And Jim getting his hopes up only to end with ‘the letter was thrown out once he got home’ - is just devastating. I loved this!

Aww, this chapter is so sweet!
(Well, except the last line, it felt like a punch in the gut. Especially that he threw the letter away, ooof)
But this young, heart-eyed Jim is adorable, and I like how quickly he fell for Pam.
Also, I love the five things genre, so I'm definitely looking forward to more (though other chapters will break my heart, I guess...)
Thank you for writing!

I love this concept! Personal letter writing is a lost art but I love that it's not lost on Jim. To envision him immediatly smitten with Pam was all sorts of bittersweet. I really loved the heart and soul he poured into that letter. Howevere there at the end you can tell how crushed he was when he became aware that, for now, he'd never have a chance to deliver it like that.

Can't wait to see where you take this one.

Well way to break my heart right off the freakin bat

This was so sweet. I love the idea of Jim being a note writer—it makes so much sense to me—and I am a sucker for a first day fic. I can’t wait to see what other moments you choose! Great job with this first chapter, even if it was quite rude of you. ;)

Okay first of all, I ADORE this concept, and the title just hit me in the feels right away. I know it’s from the song, whatever, don’t care, you’re a genius.

“But now he is walking through his front door with an idiot smile on his face and looking for new jobs is the last thing on his mind.” YEAH IT IS. UGH.

I felt my own little butterflies right along with Jim as I read the chapter and the letter, and then my own heart sinking when he learns she’s engaged.

You’ve got mad skill, my friend! I see you have “angst” in the tags. But I forgive you.
