!!!!!! This made my DAY (sad? No, not sad.) You should, uh, post another chapter later today just because. Gah. Everything is so subtle and perfect - I had to reread the part about his glove compartment 3 times before it hit me what that card was, good Jesus. And all of the reactions (Ryan, haha) and poor Toby getting yelled at all of the time, and Kelly being Kelly.
Okay, and this:
"No," she says, and after a moment he reaches over and rests his hand on her foot without looking at her while he changes the channel.
I don't know, it hit me as a perfect little sentence that explains the Roy/Pam dynamic. I love you, have I told you that lately?

It's interesting how you sort of use the union-premise as a way to show the difference between Pam and Roy, too -- I don't know if you were thinking that, but I saw that. I really like this because it shows that side of Pam & Roy that we never got to see; what they were like when they got home, and actually, it makes me more sympathetic to Roy, as I was thinking about it, what it feels like to actually *be* in a relationship, and having been with someone for that long - there's certain things that you take for granted, and certain little things that just set you off and make you mad. At this point, though, I don't know if Pam ever thought about leaving Roy -- just that her relationship with Roy and her relationship with Jim were very different. (I know exactly how that feels. It's weird.)
It's so sad, too, with the office closing down, but I could definitely see that happening and now I really want to know where everything goes! Will they keep on people that didn't sign onto the agreement? Will everyone lose their jobs? What will Pam & Roy do? So many questions. ARGH I wish this was all posted at once -- I am dying to read more.

Author's Response: Oh, wow, thank you so much! Yeah, when I wrote this it was partially as an answer to people who were like "why doesn't she just leave him?!" because it's obviously more complex than that, so I'm so glad that sense of their life is coming through.

This is a really good story. I didn't know that companies can have no-union policies. That's just silly.

And oh yeah, companies can be insanely anti-union; Wal-Mart, for instance, won't let its employees go to the bathroom at the same time or fraternize outside work, and has fired people for doing so, they're that afraid of a union being formed. Unions aren't perfect, but that's pretty messed up. And, uh, I'll get off my soapbox now!

I think you could read it as either him thinking she knew something about it (which is what my beta thought, and, well, she did, although I don't think she knew this is what would happen) or him just looking at her because everyone else is upset about losing their jobs, and she's what he doesn't wnat to lose. ... to be super sappy about it. ;)
Heh, I ended up doing a ton of reading on the history of union slogans while writing this so no, it fits right in!

This is great so far, and a very original idea I've never seen explored before. It's interesting to see how the union stuff is affecting the Roy/Pam relationship, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how it'll affect the company as a whole when it really gets moving, if it does.

Oh man, I'm so excited to see where this goes! I wouldn't have guessed that a fic about unionizing would be all that exciting, but I have total faith that you'll do something great with it. :D
I like the boredom, the routine Pam and Roy have going -- the way she just can't be bothered to care about his union, the way she just avoids thinking about Jim like, oh, that'll work. This has a very good S2 feel to it.

Hmm. This is really interesting... I'm intrigued by how Roy's feeling about his job are going to affect his and Pam's relationship. Although the episode Boys and Girls was huge for Jim and Pam, I've also long been interested in what it meant for Roy: getting smacked down about the union (by Jan!) had to hurt in so many ways.
And nice Pam and Jim banter!
