oh my god!!!

"Heroin sandwich," suggests Pam. "Sliced uranium. Porn soup."

in character, funny, inventive - i'm not sure the show is always like that! plus, you have the tiniest bit of smut (and library!smut to boot). this is a great series (which is what i keep saying) and a really wonderful chapter.

Author's Response: Thank you, Emilys List!  Yes, It was getting a little dark, so I thought some lighter ensemble fare was in order.  With some library!smut for garnish, as you say.  :)

Porn soup? Porn soup? That, right there, is genius. Pure genius. I thought I would fall out of my chair laughing.

What kind of dumplings do you put in porn soup? Or maybe you use meatballs? Yeah, I'm gonna waste the rest of today trying to come up with a recipe for porn soup. Thanks, Annabel!

Author's Response:

I think the dumpling recipe is similar to smutcakes, but with a little less sugar.  :D

Thanks, NEJ

Poor Jim. This just breaks my heart. In a good way.

Read this yesterday and didn't have time to comment.  Annabel, it really is a delight when you post a story.  You have such a fantastic way with details (water in the African Violet, smell of books, sighs) that never gets old.  Looking forward to Beach Games and the naughtiness ; )

I like how you juxtaposed Roy's earnest cluelessness next to Jim's innate understanding of how Pam's mind works.  Two very different guys, and now she's realizing how much time she's wasted with her old choices.

Great stuff as usual!  Looking foward to your BG redux.

Author's Response: Thank you, EH!  I like Roy more the more I write about him; I'm realizing Pam isn't the only one wasting her time, which kind of makes it all the more sad.

You really capture that hard to describe (and harder to write!) feeling of ST, seeing them playing (betting) together/collaborating (dealing with Michael) again, after so, so long. The relief, mutual recognition, wistfulness, bittersweet vibe, shared humor, sense of loss, shred of hope... it all comes through here in such a natural way. Also loved Pam's fantasy - subtly hot and interesting that the context was before they'd even met, when she was still in school and perhaps her life had more possibilities - coupled with how you began with her early Roy recollection, very insightful about her, I think.

"Heroin sandwich," suggests Pam. "Sliced uranium. Porn soup." Loved that. And that Jim responds, 'Exactly.' Ha!

Now what's this I hear about things getting naughty?

Pam giving Michael his 'present' and his reaction was so touching too - I love the Pam/Michael (and Jim/Michael) connection, it's so integral to the whole equation.

Naughty!?! You are SUCH an end note tease!!! lol ;-)  I loved this, of course.  Great job.

Author's Response: Oh, I know, Stablegirl, it's like an addiction with me.  Thank you so much!

Ouchies Annabel.  I've taken a stab at this thing myself - and while mine version was a tad contrived as to add to the fluff yours is painfully realistic.

Looking forward to S3 and smut.   Yeah.  I said it. :)

Owie-ow-ow.  Great energy in this -- it makes it all the more effective when Jim gets pulled up short.

He sees her falter and look away, and this is familiar too: the door opening, a few dizzying seconds of possibility, and then she is gone.

Nailed it, right there.  Great moment.

I'm thoroughly convinced this is what happened - it should be official canon, lol. Their convo is just so incredibly well done: perfect voices, funny, touching and moreover, full of that specific creativity they have together. Right from the start (sigh.) Jim's deflation is so subtly but powerfully - achingly - written. This kind of says it all:

“Isn’t that what you ordered?” she asks.

He nods.  “Yeah, I guess it just isn’t what I was expecting,” he says.

And your last paragraph could stand as a paradigm for their entire S1/S2 relationship. Fantastic.

Now what's this I hear about Safe Smut? I'm bracing myself ;-)

Delicious.  And awkward.  And wonderful.  Love your insight into the Legend of Cugino's.  Really wonderful chapter....and, I'm sorry, was there something about smut after a little Safety Training?  I'm there.

This is so good.  Glad you went back to their early days.  They barely know each other, and already she "gets" him so well with the pranking.  And the "games" between them started early, hmm?  At first she gets the vibe that he likes her in "that way", but then convinces herself that she's mistaken when he backtracks quickly upon hearing about Roy.  And then she wonders why he looks sad and tired.  Oh, you guys.

You're doing a great job with these vignettes.  I'm loving your take on these moments from the past.  And all smut breaking loose?  All for it, as you know.

So funny and so heartbreaking.  I could hear Jim's stomach drop into his shoes from here, Annabel.  The "prank" was hilarious (you had me going) and Pam's responses were so perfect and very funny.  Bunches??

Can't wait to see what you've got planned for Safety Training!

Fantastic, as usual.  “'No,' he says, 'I’ll be fine with this.'"  Oh, if only he knew what's in store for him.  Annabel, this is such a spot-on take of what I envision happening at that fateful lunch.

"And it’s true, it isn’t like a year ago, when an easy escape was always waiting for him.  He is working without a net here, and there is a heady freedom in thinking how simple and terrifying it would be to take her other hand, hold her gaze, and say, I think I could make you happy.  Please let me try."

You have such a way with words. This was just beautiful. Each time they're getting a little bit closer... baby steps.

Author's Response: Thank you, kaystar.  Yes, teeny, tiny baby steps.  ;)

This was heartwrenching in it's wordless dialogue between them.  So beautifully written.

You manage to say so much in so few words, AW:

He is working without a net here, and there is a heady freedom in thinking how simple and terrifying it would be to take her other hand, hold her gaze, and say, I think I could make you happy.  Please let me try.

He sees her falter and look away, and this is familiar too: the door opening, a few dizzying seconds of possibility, and then she is gone.

At least until the current abbreviated season, that last line was the Jim and Pam story in its entirety.  Looking foward to more of your take on S3.  How about a moment between them when the gals and Michael got back from Victoria's Secret?  It could start out joking about what was purchased, and then get all awkward since Karen's bag obviously contains something tiny and skimpy.

Whatever, I'll just leave the brilliance up to you!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, EH!  Yes, writing this story, I've noticed their pattern repeating itself over and over - and I haven't even touched The Secret or The Dundies.  It kind of makes me tired for them.  Good idea for a scene from VS!

Michael's comment is both disturbing and disgusting. But I can totally picture him saying it as he snaps a picture of them lol.

You know what, it's NEVER too early for retro!!! You did a great job writing this, I can just feel the intensity between them. I especially liked how in the beginning Pam is thinking what's the harm and then later Kevin says It's never just for fun. Even when people say it is. Good stuff.

Author's Response: I'm glad to hear you say that, iheartcreedCasino Night forever!  :)

I cannot praise the dialogue here enough. Perfect Pam, perfect Jim. I envy you that ability. Thanks for this!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, NEJ!  I like them best when they're a little flirtier than this, but I've decided to wallow in the angst this time 'round.

What a wonderful moment. And how well Pam understands it:

She knows he will kiss her, knows that she can't let it happen, but still she stands there, meeting his eyes. It can't happen, this is Jim, what is he waiting for?
