Oh, Ken where to even start? I love the back story you've concocted for Pam and Roy. It's just appealing to me that he DID appreciate Pam, that his "dreams " felt more adult... I like your comment that having little in common doesn't matter as much when you're 18 as it does when you're 27.

Great conversation between Pam and Jim. Rings very true to character. I have to go or I'd write more...

Author's Response: Thank you! I always felt like Roy and Pam really cared for each other...they were just very different people. I'm sure when they were in high school, they had a lot more in common and/or just enjoyed each other's company more but as they became older they began to grow apart.

You write GREAT dialogue!!!!!!!!!!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. It's really important to me that the characters still sound like themselves!

Have I mentioned sheer perfection? That is the ONLY phrase to describe this fic.

Author's Response: You certainly know how to make a girl blush!

Great portrayal of this horribly tension-filled morning!  Do we get Jim's perspective next?

Author's Response: Yep! That's coming up next. You know me so well. ;)

Oh, no, this chapter didn't kick your ass!  It may have given you a workout but, girl, YOU BEAT IT INTO SUBMISSION!

Positively a tour de force, I think, the way you've described perfectly the utter heartbreak everyone is feeling for their own reasons.  The next chapter is sure to be a gutwrencher, too, I fear.  Poor Pam must be beside herself.  No contact from Jim in three days and her call goes unanswered.

P.S.  You might want to go over it again to fix a few typos/tense mismatches...

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the head's up! I was pretty embarrassed when I went back over this chapter and realized how sloppy it was. Note to self: Do not post new chapters when frustrated with writing style and insanely hungover. :) This wasn't a fun chapter to write but I imagine that must have been such an awful day for all three of them and I really wanted to explore the hurt and tension they were all feeling. Thanks for the feedback!

Very interesting premise. I like your take on Len. Do you have your story arc worked out? Len could be a manipulative prick, a soft-hearted guy, an analytical guy... So many ways you can take this.

Author's Response: Thank you! I do have an arc planned out for this, though I haven't outlined it, I know what I want to happen and about where I'd like it to happen. And I do agree, there are many ways you can take him right now. I don't see Len as a one-dimensional person, and without giving too much away, I see room for some character development with him.

Oh, Ken gets sneaky! I'm not sure that I'm going to like Len... but I have the feeling that, in your story, he'll be instrumental in getting Pam & Jim together.

Nice build up of your plot.

Author's Response: Thanks! I majored in creative writing in college but haven't really done it in years so this is my way of dipping my toes back in. And yeah, I didn't like him very much either. Let's hope he eventually behaves himself.

This is so cute! I snorted out loud when I got to Merv's ride on the rubber duck so he could have a bath with Cece. I'm glad I wasn't drinking at the time!

Author's Response: Vampiric Blood, so nice to hear from you! I am glad you're enjoying. The rubber ducks thing I pulled straight from my own 4-year-old self...I'm glad it worked!

Oh, you are evil to end things right here!  I want more!  I thought we'd have some kind of revelatory moment at the Rosetta Stone.  Of course, there's probably NEVER a quiet moment at the Rosetta Stone, so it wouldn't have fit the mood of the chapter.

I'm looking forward to the rest our our day at the museum ... and dinner ... and going back to the hotel room!

Annabel - It has been AGES since I've obsessed over a fanfic like this! So many questions roiling around in my mind... What NGO does Jim work for that would send him off to VIENNA to teach a class that goes for weeks? (He WAS planning weekend excursionS to Madrid.) What exactly is he going to teach? Will Pam delay her trip to Madrid for the duration & accompany Jim to Vienna? Will they even get out of the room today before the big dinner?

So many questions... Can't wait for the next chapter!

I still come back once in a while, hoping to see another chapter of this story. It's so good, and a really intriguing premise! I hope you'll continue!

Oh, honey, THAT was plenty eventful!  I just loved the interplay of cockiness (ahem!) and neurosis in Jim's mind.  Can't wait for Pam's turn.

I'm also really looking forward to the backstory you create for Pam.  What has she done for the past few years?  Has she been in love with anyone else?  How did she develop all this self confidence and self awareness that she seems to exhibit?

More, more, more please!

I find myself wondering if Pam will explain herself a bit in future chapters. I am surprised by some of her reactions. Jim says he doesn't want to try to sleep knowing that this will end tomorrow. Rather than enthusing that it doesn't have to end so soon, she protests that she has nothing to wear to his gala. The way she speaks (in some places) does make it sound like she could walk away in two days and look back with a smile. In other places she seems more emotionally involved. I hope you let her talk at some length in the next few chapters.

Layover can include anything you damn well please! I swear you could make the Scranton phone book read sexy.

Pam must stay with Jim for his whole whirlwind European tour. He has a stop planned for every EU country, does he not?

Oh dear God... FINALLY! Don't come this way too often anymore but, when I do, I'm always looking for an update on this story. You totally shocked me with the marriage AND SEPARATION. Clearly we have a lot of history to cover. But first, a delicious night as only you write them! I can't wait for more!!

Author's Response: I'm glad!  I've had this in mind since the beginning, and I was wondering how obvious it was.

Had to come back for a re-read.  What a glorious closing paragraph!

The adolescent shellshock falls away, and something else takes its place. He is abruptly, gratefully aware of his years and ability. His fingertips skate the length of her spine as he lowers his mouth to her neck, just under her jawline, and feels her breath catch.

Jim is just hitting his stride.  I can feel the confidence blooming and ... it's gonna be a good night!

I can't believe my good fortune... I checked in on the day you updated this story! I'm on my phone, so hard to copy & paste, but I LOVE the freight train / feedback loop passage. Sooooo looking forward to more chapters!

Not to get overly picky, but there is one phrase in this chapter that didn't ring true to me:

He has never been sure what she's thinking, but he's always been sure of her, or at least, of his worth to her...

I always thought that one of Jim's problems was that he was absolutely not confident of his worth to Pam.  He'd hope, sometimes he'd think he had it right, but there was always that doubt.  Otherwise, I don't think he'd have left.

That point aside, I must have read this five times this weekend.  I am so, SO glad you are writing again!

Um, not to be too needy, but I am pretty sure that poor Pam is turning into a prune in that shower by now.  She should be getting out soon!

Author's Response: She's out! :D

Oh, I am thoroughly enjoying this!  So glad to have you back.

I love the little bone you throw poor Jim with that little text message.  Pam is coming across as so together and unaffected by this chance meeting.  I'm glad her friend's text is blowing her cover a bit.

I hope you have LOTS of chapters planned for this, lady!

Author's Response: I have quite a few planned, really, and have written the penultimate one already.  You know the one.  ;)

So, it's kind of driving me insane that you are keeping us totally shut out of Pam's thoughts.  From a writerly perspective, though, I like it very much!  It makes us share Jim's agitation and uncertainty about what's happening.

I was hoping that a NEXT button would magically appear when I got to this chapter (again).  Alas, it still is not.  Sometimes it does happen though ... the author posts hte next chapter while you're reading through.  Maybe I'll hit the lottery tomorrow...

Author's Response: It was a couple of days later, Vampiric Blood, sorry!  I kind of like sticking with Jim; I've done stories where I've switched POV and I've done a few from Pam's perspective, but only one other from Jim's.

And now I'm feeling all ambivalent about going back to the hotel room. Because, as much as I'd love to see some, uh, reconnecting, I'd hate to think of our Jim as a cheater.

Author's Response: Oh VB, trust your Auntie Annabel and hold the faith.  Everything will be well.

And can I mention how gorgeous your writing is? I just love that image of the lions looking down at them, knowing how Jim feels. The closing paragraph, too, is beautiful. I'd quote it but I'm on my Droid & it's too much of a pain in the arse...
