Well, looks like Roy's going to get a long cooling off period in prison to figure things out. Good riddance.

I always love a good Jim/Penny conversation! And the hospital bed scene is well done.

"“Yeah,” Jim wiped his eyes again. “Not how any of us planned it, but you being awake like this is the best present we could ask for.” "DORK" That's some good Jim/Pam

Okay, that ending definitely merited the multi-chapter format. VERY Christmas classic. Well done.

Author's Response: Yup, he gets a nice concrete hotel to sit and think for a while

Jim and Penny are a fun pair to be sure. Glad you liked their interaction. Thanks for the vote of confidence in the JAM banter. It feels like it can be tricky to get right.

Thanks for the push to make this one multi-chapter. It would have been way to long for a one shot for sure. Really glad you liked it.

Summary:

Pam has always wanted to spend Chanukah somewhere warm.

So it's a good thing then that Roy just bought two tickets to sunny California!

Or, as it happens, not.

Okay, just based on the table of contents, I love this already. BRING BACK TOM LERHER. I also think these are all my prompts, sorry about that. This is an excellent way to work the song title into the plot.

Roy as a guy who just flat out won't absorb information that's not important to him... down to Pam being Jewish! - is very Roy.

Channukah as a defensive holiday is a description I'm definitely gonna end up using next year.

Oh, Michael. He's well intentioned! He really is! But yes. Awful.

"seven additional Secret Santa exchanges, one for each day of Chanukah, “only we can get someone to dress up as Judah Maccabee and hand out the presents!"" This is brilliant and needs to become a cultural phenomenon.

"Angela hunting her down, murdering her, and feeding her to her cats. All in the spirit of Christmas, of course." Ah, I've missed your writing.

"he casually mentioned that his grandfather had picked it up “sometime in the 1930s, from his neighbors the Gottliebs, when they moved." I laughed, but I don't feel great about it. Same with the smashing of the menorah, which sounds lovely.

ROY. YOU SUCK.

GREASE FIRE! Michael probably did it trying to make latkes for Pam.

"The heavy weight of being perceived was just…not something she could stand until she’d gotten her feet back under her" I just really like this sentence. Feels like it says a lot about their relationship at this juncture of the story. (And I love the implication from his closet pacing that Jim knows she can't handle seeing him right now.)

"Since Hank was a building employee, not a Dunder Mifflin employee, he was unionized, the lucky bastard)." Ha.

I want to see that candle themed hat.

"Well, now she knew how her dad would act if she ever needed to bury a body." Bill is a real one in this chapter. As is Penny.

The contrast between Pam being raised by people who can let things go and Roy being raised by people who can't feels significant in explaining their relationship.

A HUMAN-SIZED PITTSBURGH PENGUIN. Amazing use of the prompt and also do those actually exist because I'd like one.

The nut prank is fun. Exactly the sort of thing that would drive Dwight and literally no one else insane.

Last line is a gut-punch.

"No, it was nice. Funny even. Not cute. Definitely not cute." *looks straight to camera like Jim on the Office*

Penny and Izzy as shippers on board is always a treat. I want in on the next round of dreidel.

I have a sneaking suspicion the loose-leaf tea might pop up again. Just a hunch.

Oh, Roy. Roy, Roy, Roy.

Ah, and there goes the lottery ticket. That's a very Roy excuse, too. Like a little kid thinking he's found a loophole... which I'm now seeing is apparently very intentional. And I also very much buy Pam as more dangerous when she's quiet.

Hmmm. Interesting that you have an emotional reaction while handling Jim's "Tupperware" Pam. Nothing significant there I bet...

The meet-up in the rain is very classy. And going from the rain to the shower is *chef's kiss*.

"Upon discussing with Larissa, though, she deemed this gift lame and something she had already purchased for their mother." The use of Larissa in this fic is fun.

I love a good Dwight/Jim friendship moment! (Pretty sure that was my prompt.) I can totally buy Dwight having unintentionally noticed enough about Pam that he'd be able to figure out the teapot as a good gift.

Cheers to you, my friend!

I think I mentioned this on A03, but I love the Dwight-Angela soul-bond reveal. Very them.

"Anything that gets one of Dwight or Angela out of the office for any length of time is a good thing, and she’d probably go so far as to say that something that gets them both out of the way for fifty-two minutes and counting is a great thing, but she can’t help but worry for Toby’s safety." Lol.

Really fun Jim-Pam dialogue here.

"He’s sitting behind his desk with a carton of ice cream as big as his head and a sad look on his face, playing Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ loudly enough to rattle the glass in his office windows." Amazing. And quality use of the ensemble all through this chapter.

Author's Response: The ensemble were my favorite part of this chapter, I'm glad you liked Michael! I got a kick out of imagining the songs Michael Scott would end up putting on a missing-my-soulmate mixtape. There's a lot of Coldplay on there... :D

Ah, I love a good script format fic!

VERY good Michael dialogue here. You can juuuuuust see how he's getting there enough that it's not implausible that he would, but it remains ridiculous.

"Given the choice, I think they’d still pick the meeting." Too true. I doubt they'd have veggie hot dogs anyways.

Dwight selling the guy on Christmas is amazing.

Pam and Roy as having literally settled for each other is a nice touch. And love the accidental reveal by Jim here. Sorry, Jimbo, can't walk that one back.

Ah, these talking heads are great. Love Phyllis' in particular.

Ngl, I chuckled at the checkmate joke.

"I haven’t seen anything like it since Jim spiked his coffee with Red Bull back in ‘03." Write THAT fic.

"Costa Rica es bonita en esta ?poca del a?o" Lol

Nice Phyllis-Jim moment!

"I know, I was jumping on a couch, and everything." Your pop culture references are really timely here.

Oooh. Very cool remix of the mixed berry yogurt moment!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, I was really happy with how the talking heads turned out - but the pop culture references were so difficult hahaha! I was writing Kelly's talking head and desperately trying to think of cute TV couples, but my mind just went blank! What a relief to hear that at least the couch reference landed. :) And I'm glad you liked the mixed-berry yogurt! As soon as I thought of the fic premise I knew exactly how this chapter was going to end. :D

"The sad part is that this still qualifies as one of his more productive mornings at Dunder-Mifflin." Too true.

"People wait all their lives for a soulmate, he’s not dumb enough to let her slip through his fingers." oooh, also a canon-compliant line.

Jim being able to reference the Shins lyrics is *thumbs up emoji*. Also him noticing the little details is sweet.

Again, good use of Jim's Philly sports fandom here, and his interior monologue is solid. Very sweet.

EEEEEP. THAT ENDING.

Looking forward to seeing you around here more!

Author's Response: Philly sports, alternate music and Pam Beesly are Jim's three great passions in life. :D I hate that ending, every time I read it I just have to laugh, it's so corny hahahahaha!! But I'm super glad you liked it, it was a definitely lot of fun to write this chapter and a nice way to bring the story to a close. :)

Now that's the Channukah gift I wanted! So glad you've joined us over here!

"Michael’s track record of wrangling, roping, lassoing and otherwise Rawhide-ing the team into working overtime" is a fun line.

"he’d been at least halfway to convincing Dwight that Phyllis was the last living member of the Romanov dynasty until Kevin had opened his dumb mouth." Write this fic.

I always liked the Jim voice in this fic - both entertaining and feels very accurate to his internal monologue. He sounds like a normal guy who's just blown away by the woman he's in love with. And the image you paint of Pam drinking tea in his bed through his eyes is lovely. Also, him blue-screening over Pam wearing his clothes is hilarious and so true.

Love the banter between them here! Oh, and the transition from him being giddy about her invading his space to him recognizing the color of the mug to them accidentally stepping into an awkward moment is well done.

Yeah, this is just a really good slice of life. Covers a lot of ground very organically AND very quickly.

So glad we've got you here now! Welcome to MTT!

Author's Response: Aw, shucks, thanks so much! Kinda crazy that you got so much food for thought out of Jim's inner ramblings; I started writing this story about a year ago and chipped away at it a paragraph or a sentence at a time for months on end, so I was totally exhausted by the time I finally finished and posted the fic. I guess it was worth the effort to get such a lovely review! :)

This opener feels like a spot-on depiction of Pam's thoughts that summer. The sadness of it all feels right, and the way she didn't decide not to contact him so much as she just she never quite worked up the nerve to do so. I feel that. And I agree that one hard shove could've changed everything.

"No one listens to her anymore." Yep. That's Pam in the post-Casino Night summer.

I also love the idea of Jan playing sort of mentor role with Pam here. Pre-meltdown Jan is a character with a lot of potential, and I feel like you've taken some steps towards realizing it here.

"At least she has the relief that Jim isn't going to fall in love with another receptionist." Lol.

Like this depiction of too-slick Josh and the contrast to Michael (and between Scranton and Stamford) a lot.

"I can't remember the last time a girl asked me out to dinner" I see what you did there. Also, like Pam knowing exactly what Jim is doing just by looking at him work.

Anyhow. This just feels like a good capture of Pam's character. Well done.

Author's Response:

When I imagined this story, I always thought it would be weird for Jan to confide in Pam. A super boss from New York talking office business with Pam, the lowest level person in Scranton's office (even Ryan has surpassed her). However, I always thought of Jan as someone who is very lonely after her divorce, and just as she subsequently fell silent in the arms of Michael - the only person who offered her some affection - she may very well have been looking for someone to listen to her, at a very specific time in her day to day life. And Pam is the best listener I know.

Thank you very much for the detailed analysis.

Okay, this beginning feels very canon-complicit. The way-over-the-top Michael dopiness is fun. And I do love Pam immediately selling out Marina. It's interesting seeing her with a pre-Jim partner in crime! She's well-characterized in a brief appearance here.

I really like Marina! Such a fun addition to this world. Although she is possibly evil.

Awwww, Jim. You have such a crush. Eh, I'm sure it'll resolve itself soon enough. The stocking stuffers are too cute.

"The absolute dream was how she felt right now with the mistletoe hanging above her and Jim – like she was about to receive a Secret Secret Santa gift from her Secret Secret Wishlist." Like this line a lot!

This was not quite what I had in mind, but instead is way better.

I give this exactly a week before corporate blocks access to fanfiction.net on the Dunder Mifflin network, at which point Michael accidentally discovers MTT.

“I don’t get it.”
“It sounds stupid.”
“Sounds like it’s for nerds.”
“And losers.”
“And idiots.”
“And morons.”
“And dorks.”
“And--”
Rude, Alyson. Simply rude. Fair, but rude. Also, Michael having to explain what shipping was is perfect. Michael as a My Immortal fan is genius. So true to form. Also also also this is hilarious.

"They like making Jim different things, I’ve found.” Too true.

Ah, more meta-fictional Jim. He should've known better than to get in the way of true love! Terrible things happen in fanfic to people who do that!

"It’s no Threat Level Midnight, but it’ll do." Too true, Michael. Too true.

This has become my favorite tradition too, please start working on next year's now.
