Author of the Month March 2020

I've been writing fanfiction for awhile now. Just recently discovered The Office and figured I'd try my hand at that as well.

At first I thought of having all my stories in the same universe, but then I had some AU ideas. So any stories that occur within a common universe will be in a given series.

Now this is a very interesting concept. By any chance have you ever read or is this in any way inspired by "The Giver" by Lois Lowry? I get a very similar vibe. Quite a few differences there too. Nice world building in a short time space too. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this goes forward.

Author's Response: I think I have heard of that book, but I've never read it! I'll have to read it after I finish this, I wouldn't want to accidentally copy anything. I'm glad you like it so far!

Good to get Jim's thoughts here. Also nice bit of world building. I kinda like how to Jim's mind at least, no one really knows why the love laws exist other than "that's the way it is."

Thus far Karen seems more tolerable than Roy. How much that changes remains to be seen of course.

Nice to see Jim besotten by Pam so quickly though.

One thing I'm curious about. If love isn't allowed in this universe, why would there be romcoms? Maybe a way for the government to hold some form of control. If you've ever read "The Hunger Games," there's a particularly nasty line in there. I'll paraphrase a bit. "A little hope is a good thing." Maybe it's something like that.

Don't get me wrong I still really like this whole concept. I just wonder where Pam's thoughts of wanting a real romantic and loving relationship come from considering such things are outlawed and marriages are assigned. Could be something to dive into a bit more.

Other than that, still nice to see the growing relationship. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Author's Response:

Good point, I honestly didn't even consider that. I'll definitely look into that more and dive deeper into why it's a thing, but off the top of my head, I think that romcoms in this universe would be seen as kind of like sci-fi movies in our universe. Like something that people can appreciate and even long for, but in the end it's not real. But, since this has to do with feelings and not aliens, some people, like Pam, do end up getting too wrapped up into the stories and believe that love can happen. If that makes sense lol.

I'm glad you're enjoying it, though!

Very much of a falling in love feeling here. Mainly due to the fact that they probably have never felt like this before so it's new, crazy, dangerous, all that.

It did feel in character for them so that was good. Looking forward to more.

Sweet to start, then a bit of angst to end things there. You did a good job of expressing the emotions of them here. Clearly they want to be together and the fact they can't is of course a hard thing to consider.

Interesting choice to have them start to be friends with Roy and Karen. I mean it does serve a purpose in that it helps them have some more time together so that's nice. Considering we're well outside the bounds of canon, it's a chance to play with some of those ideas too.

Can't wait to see what Jim's got up his sleeve.

Yeah, they're taking a risk here. While it's good that they're being honest with each other and Roy and Karen, it's true that there's a lot to be concerned about. We still don't know what happen to those who break the marriage laws here. You've got me guessing as to where this is headed, which continues to make this story interesting.

Author's Response: Yeah I think them not knowing what happens when they get caught is what's worrying them the most, especially Pam. But we will find out what happens, eventually. (: Thanks your your reviews!!

Wow! Yeah, that was a shock. I get why Pam and Jim did what they did. But now things have all gotten really confused. And for Roy to just storm out like that? Going right into dangerous waters here. Very exciting with everything.

Reviewer: warrior4 Signed

The conversation with Roy seems more plausible than the conversation with Karen, especially how's you've set things up. Roy and Pam don't get along. When he walks in on them, yes it's a shock and knee-jerk anger does make sense. As much as we like to consider Roy to be an oaf, he is an adult, even if it takes him a bit longer to get the point.

Jim and Karen here do mostly get along. So it's a bit of a different dynamic for them. Anger, surprise, shock, sure I get all those things. Would she have eventually agreed to the plan? Probably. Maybe after she and Jim talk face to face though.
Like others it makes me wonder if Karen has something up her sleeve.

All this is just making me very curious to see how things pan out. We still don't know what's the penalty for going against your assigned partner. Personally I'm kinda hoping that somehow Jim and Pam will be able to marry each other without having to go through the sham marriages. Talk to a lawyer and find some obscure loophole that gets them out of their assignment. Something like that maybe.

You're still doing a good job with all this though. Like I said, I am looking forward to more.

Bringing Volunteer Sheriff Dwight was kind of a fun turn. Yes, he's gullible, but he's also asking the right questions as to why Jim isn't with Karen and who Pam might be. For all his bluster, Dwight is actually quite intelligent in his own way. Makes me wonder what might happen further down the line with that.

Drunk Pam at Chili's could be fun, but also I get a small sense of foreboding. In Vino Veritas and all. Might Pam let something slip? Looks like we'll see.

Ok, I was thinking that a Drunk Pam would basically jump all over Jim and their secret would be out thus Dwight would start to get all important and the like. Kinda nice to be proven wrong.

What's Micheal up to? There are times in canon I wonder if all his Micheal-ness is all an act and under it all is the Good Micheal we see from time to time. I kinda get that feeling here. You've been keeping us all on our toes throughout this story and this is no different.

Really looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I love Holly to the rescue. Though I've got a feeling there might be a few wrinkles in this plan. Seems to me that Roy might go along with it. Karen might not though. So I like that we have a real glimmer of hope here to be sure. I also like that Micheal lost all his bluster and under all that is a genuinly caring guy. Nice writing to bring that out.

Yes a recap with the first part of the chapter, but it was nice to see Jim's reaction to this new information.

Nicely detailed once they got back to the house. Lovely scene between the two of them.

In the words of David Wallace, "Well, that kinda worked out." No issues with me here with a Roy and Karen pairing. Just adds another flavor to this AU you've got going. Not everything has to be heartache and struggle. Sometimes things just work out well. That's ok too.

Good description of Pam's anxiety leading up to the conversation. That makes a lot of sense that she'd be really nervous about everything.

Nice chapter to get things moving. Looking forward to seeing how the rest turns out. Your away-from-public-Michael is great to read. I kinda wish we'd seen more serious Micheal in canon, but then again the brief glances of that we do see stand out all the more brightly because of their rarity in canon. It's just nice to see under the facade with how you've written him here.

There are still a few questions, such as how they dealth with the familes. You did allude to that, lying, sneaking around, and such. Likewise we never really found out what would happen if the forced marrigae law was broken. Those are a couple things I would have liked to have seen. Maybe later as one-shots.

Past all that, it was a very cute scene. That Pam gets to live out her childhood dream is very cute. Jim's reflection on how things lined up for him was also heartwarming.

Well done for getting this out there. It was an adventure to see go through to the end.

Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat.

How'd you do it? Seriously what's your secret? To have my feelings shatter at the image of the teapot in pieces on the floor and then to mend everything so beautifully.

As much as something needed to break between Jim and Pam in S3, I am sorry that it was the teapot that was the catalyst for all this. I mean you got the emotions just perfect. However even though the teapot is shattered so are their defenses around each other. Great way to have them finally have the heart to heart they needed.

Loved Dwight standing guard as well as his thoughts on everything. He has such a unique friendship with Pam and you did that justice.

Well mourn for the teapot in this universe, but we'll delight in the fact that now Jim and Pam are together.

Author's Response:

I am sorry the teapot was the catalyst too! I love that teapot... I love all teapots...

But, I needed something and unfortunately the teapot it was...

Thanks Warrior!

Interesting to say the least. Gives Pam quite a bit to think about that's for sure. Some questions remain though. Why Pam and Roy drove separately. Obviously hey had a fight about things. Is Pam thinking more about leaving Roy now?

You wrote Pam being flustered very well. Seems like everything was spinning out of control until she hugged Jim there. Then maybe something calmed down. Jim is now befuddled that's for sure.

Works good a one-shot but I wouldn't mind seeing another chapter to see how everything ties off.

Author's Response:

Thank you, warrior, for your great review - as usual!

Answering the question - Pam and Roy had a fight... over the broken toast oven (and I totally failed with an explanation of this moment in the story; I should probably add a line or two to point at this).

And, as much as I want to set Pam and Jim together as soon as it's possible, I doubt that first-season Pam could leave Roy after one dream (even such a meaningful one). But, if I figure out how to organize her escape, I'll definitely add some chapter(s) or a connected story.

Lovely bit of fluff. It's important to remember the road as a relationship grows. Not to dwell on it necessarily, but to gauge progress. Love that they can view the ups and downs of their early relationship in a way that brings them closer together now.

And it's always a wonderful image to have Jim and Pam dancing together. Nicely done.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I'm glad I was able to paint the picture nicely!

I love all the imagery embedded everywhere here. How first the rain brought healing to them, then washed clean the past, and finally triggered new growth and life. Beautiful images in there.

Short, sweet, and lovely.

Well that's certainly one way to get over an argument. Seriously though, the sniping back and forth at home after work, was a good touch. It was a great way to show that they have a real relationship, one that has ups and downs. Not a fairy tale ride off into the sunset type of thing.

Also great way to have Jim be aggressive and at the same time reassuring to Pam. Sometimes one needs a bit of a jolt to break through things and that worked good. Also glad they reverted back to laughter there at the end when Jim realized that she was the one who did start everything. Yet another way to show the strength of their relationship.

Great job as always.

Going AU right away here. Interesting to see all of their thoughts. Roy being the testosterone fueled jock we all take him for. Pam not quite knowing where she stands until she sees Roy flirting with Katy. And of course love-lorn Jim being his love-lorn self.

This is just all sorts of interesting and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Very interesting introspection on everyone's parts. Kind of unique twist getting Katy's POV. That's not something we see happen very often so it was a nice change of pace.

Also no June 10th announcement here as well. Just lots of confused emotions all around. I liked that Pam warmed up to having Jim's arm around her. I find it telling that Jim's arm around her shoulder is warm and safe whereas Roy's is heavy and awkward.

Doing a great job getting into everyone's heads with this chapter.

So lots of big changes here. Katy being the one to break up with Jim seems par for the course. She's actually kind of right. He did spend time cozied up to Pam and ignored her, his date. We all know the reasons why, but she does have a legitimate point.

Roy is being an ass as usual.

Gotta feel for Pam though. She's really had her whole life rocked. First with the feelings for Jim and now with Roy saying all that. Wow. Big weekend.

Really looking forward to seeing how things are in the office come Monday.

Really good job on creating an intimate moment with Jim and Pam in the stairwell there. Both Jim and Pam are finally free to explore their feelings for each other and seeing how that realization bloomed was really sweet. I also liked how Jim stood up for Pam there in the kitchen. Good job Jim.

Pam's realization that Jim has been holding himself back from really touching her was a great moment of clarity on her part. Likewise the fact that she reaches for him was adorable to witness.

Roy's an ass.

Really interesting to see Katy's POV show up again. I like that she has the wherewithal to avoid Roy. I mean seriously a drunk dial from a bar? I reiterate my previous statement about him.

Though I do wonder since he's struck out with Katy if he's going to try and get Pam back. This new version of Pam though I think also has the clarity to see what kind of future that might bring.

Obviously I really liked this chapter. Can't wait to see how it all wraps up.

Great way to end things. Lovely to see Jim and Pam move past friends to in a relationship. After the break-ups and everything it's lovely to see.

I do kinda wish we could have had a glimpse into Roy's world. Last chapter after Katy rejected him I had this vision that that's what keeps happening to him. Rejection after rejection because the women he's after are put off by him drunk calling and the like. But your story.

Besides that, like I said it was wonderful to watch Jim and Pam get together. Great story. Lots of fun.
