Hey Safe & Sound lovers, just for fun I made a playlist, please enjoy and look for the update soon! Spotify | Youtube

Just an Office lover writing fanfics under a penname that's a Park & Rec reference.

"You've been around forever!"

Kinda, I was absolutely obsessed with the show during the Season 3 of Angst (aka when it was looking like they'd drag out the will-they-won't-they indefinitely and only fanfic could fill the void!) and joined up, submitting my decent fanfics and being incredibly intimidated by the fantastic writers this fandom attracted.

After S4 I pretty much fell off the fanfic and fandom map, but Netflix helped me rekindle my JAM feeling something fierce a few summers ago and I thought hey better check on MTT. And here we are!

"Are you ever going to finish Anywhere But Here?"
I am! I have it plotted out and I'm chipping away at it, along with my other WIPs, and once I finish them up I will NOT have like 5 WIPs at once again >.<

I also have most of my office stuff archived at FFN and AO3

Please don't hesitate to review no matter the age of my fics!

This is so incredibly in character and could easily be a missing scene from the show. I can so easily picture them, Jim putting on a smile with his heartbreak right underneath, Pam aware Jim is hurting but unaware just how much. Amazing work, dwangela!

Author's Response: My goal with this story was ultimately to capture the delicate balance of their relationship in season two, so I’m relieved to hear that it went okay. The raw emotion of Booze Cruise is so heart wrenching, and this story was begging to be told. Thank you so much!

Ffff

For real though that was super hot. And though it wasn't this fic's main intent, I really liked how you set everything up with a look at Jim and Pam's Texas life. I especially appreciate that it's Pam away for a bit doing something for her career. So, points for beard smut and points for writing a post-series fic which there is far too little of!

P.S. you have maybe noticed that there is a severe shortage of fics that take place between the end of Paper Airplane and that amazing kiss and the start of Living the Dream with Pam's cheeky talking head. I know you don't want more ideas but since this was so great I think you could definitely help fill in that gap ;-)

I caught up on this and dang, if and when we ever make a follow-up to our Lemon flavored JAM list, this one will definitely be at the top. The IM banter is so good, I always envision Pam being a little more forward (and a little naughtier) when she's sure the cameras and coworkers aren't looking. I want to make it clear though that the jellybean on this review is 100% for the candle reference XD (anyone out there lost on the candle reference look for "Not A Word", I have it linked in our lemon flavored JAM list above ;-) )

Author's Response: *blushes* Thank you! I put that candle reference in there on purpose, and it got the exact reaction I was hoping for ;)

Okay so I'm making an executive mod decision and giving this an insta-Dundie because oh my god this is good. You just captured the S9 rift perfectly, neither one is all right or wrong, they just have gotten out of sync and have no idea how to get back. I think people don't always see how much Pam's insecurities and fear influenced the situation but you included all that perfectly. Really you managed to make both Jim and Pam very simpathetic but also frustratingly stubborn, it all felt very real and true to the characters and the situation.

And after 5 years I finally have my "Nice morning too" fic and it was indeed a very, very nice morning, thank you!

Author's Response: Wow, thank you! I am honored and flattered and SO glad you liked it! I hate that there’s so little S9 fic and I always wondered why. Now I know—it’s a difficult space to get into! I struggled so much with making sure neither one of them were 100% right or 100% wrong, because I think they both have valid arguments, so I am so so glad that at least one person feels like I succeeded in that! Your compliments mean so much thank you again! And when you mentioned the other day in the SUT chat that you needed a “nice morning” fic, I knew I had to get this out of my head and onto the page (so to speak) because who am I to keep Noble Overlord Mermaid waiting? XD

This was a delight to read, you manage to be very sweet without getting syrupy. I like that even though this is arguably their happiest time together, you seamlessly included some of the things that would cause some issues down the road, Jim's fear of losing Pam, Pam's pesky self-doubt and worry that she's not enough for Jim. But mostly you feel the love and happiness. Good work!

Author's Response: Thank you! “Sweet without getting syrupy” was definitely my intent while writing this one. I wanted to write something that showed their relationship in its early, happy stages without it becoming a cringy, muddled mess of emotion, which can be a hard line to walk, so it’s relieving to know that I achieved that. Relationships are rarely ever entirely sunshine and roses. Pam has a consistent streak of self doubt, and Jim spent so long pining for Pam that I think it’s entirely unrealistic to believe that all that simply vanished once their relationship began.

Like I said over at AO3, I'm all for fics with Jim taking charge and this is good and dirty but with just enough sweetness to still feel like Jim and Pam. And yes, it definitely is very Pam to know what she wants and desires but not be able to communicate it well when the moment came. Also silly side note, a fave fic of mine is Insatiate #11 at AO3 which is about Pam getting a bit turned on talking to Jim on the phone and at one point Jim talks about watching Pandacam so your bit about them watching a doc about pandas just cracked me up XD

Anyway, thanks for posting here!

Author's Response: That’s so funny! That tidbit was included because I was just in NYC. Got the chance to go to the Museum of Sex and they have a whole floor dedicated to animal sex. I read that fun fact about the panda porn and it’s been rattling around in my brain for ages LOL.

One thing I like about this is I can just stop after The Return (it also did not get past this girl how Pam and Jim were standing so close in the conference room during the pinata scene) then skip to like Fun Run or Dunder Mifflin Infinity and this could totally work as canon ;). And the other thing I like about this is pretty much everything else!

I have to say I like how you portray Karen here, this really is when things *should* have ended with Jim and Karen and I find your Karen here much more in line with what the show had established by this point, direct and persistent but enough self-respect to accept it was over.

And of course, Karen gracefully bowing out led to the sexytimes much sooner which is fantastic. I loved your repeat of "this is the hottest thing that's ever happened" 'cause you know Jim thought that at least 5 separate times their first time. And that last line! So good, don't ever stop writing these smutty oneshots!

Author's Response: I think you’re dead on about Karen. She had been established as kind of this no nonsense kind of person and she put up with a lot of nonsense from Jim. And I mean, who hasn’t done something like that, really, but come on, girl! And let me tell you, when I first saw this episode and saw how close they were standing in that piñata scene, I screeched like a banshee because I just KNEW they were about to be together. I’m sure you can relate to my disappointment, haha. Maybe this has been bouncing around in my head ever since. Thank you so much! I don’t have any plans to stop, so be on the lookout for more! :)

I needed to catch up on the last few chapters and then realized that I have egregiously not reviewed this at all so time to fixed both those issues!

You know how in the Pilot episode you’re just starting to feel Jim and Pam’s cute banter and flirty chemistry then *boom* Roy walks in and the rug is pulled out? Well this chapter had the same energy with Pam doing exactly what we wanted her to do on casino night deciding to be with Jim and then *boom* fast forward years later, they’ve been broken up for years (?) and Pam’s inspecting Jim’s finger for a wedding ring, wha-what??

Anyway amazing job conveying the awkwardness of running into an ex (especially an ex you’re still very much attracted to) and dropping lots of little bread crumbs I have no choice but to follow. And it’s early but I can already tell your Karen is the friend Pam so needed and deserved but never got on the show (but thankfully we have fanfic!)

Author's Response: Oh, NLM. Any review from you is a treat, and this one is no different. Thank you for your kind words about this story. And I'm SO glad you like where the Karen and Pam friendship is going. You know I feel robbed, but I'm SO thankful for fanfic and MTT to fill that void.

I love everything this fic chooses to be and don't really know where to start but here we go! I too am totally here for Pam having a wild summer post broken engagement. Love the detail of her "going out with Isabel persona" being totally different from her "going out with Kelly" persona (also memo to all JAM writers: moar Isabel in fics plz thx).

Love the bit where everyone is trying to make Roy's DUI Pam's problem, I can totally envision it and I'm proud of your Pam for refusing to take it on.

I am NOT a fan of Pam/Ryan in any romantic sense but I do love their antagonistic frenemy dynamic and you write that amazingly. Your Ryan is perfect, I like how you never have Ryan softened by Pam's humor and charm, he just remains an a-hole who pretty much treats his interactions with Pam as game that he's at once annoyed and amused by. (That line where Pam asks if he's 70 because he likes mint lifesavers cracked me up so much, so perfect). IF I have to imagine Pam and Ryan hooking up, I think it would have to be like you write it, no underlying feelings, not even a real attraction, they're mostly just trying to one-up each other. That Body Shot passage, damn! You are a writer, Coley!

Author's Response:

Not even going to lie, the lifesavers bit and the Roy thing are two of my favorite moments in this so I’m glad you enjoyed them as well!

Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to comment! 😊 I definitely appreciate it.

Oooh, yes, I really like this. When I read reaction and analysis of Season 9, there’s a tendency to make it “Jim vs Pam” and that’s just not what it’s about at all. They’re both making mistakes, both trying not to burden the other with their problems and as a result keeping things from each other, but both are still trying their best.

This line really gets to the heart of the issue, at least on Pam’s side:

“She knows he’s doing this for them, she wants him to chase his dreams, but it’s so hard to root for someone when you feel like you’re falling apart. When you feel like his dreams are growing bigger than you, when you feel that you’re just simply not enough lately.”

People seem to forget Pam’s always struggled with her confidence, and with all the Athlead stuff from Jim not including her in the decisions to her struggling when he’s gone it’s no surprised we see Pam’s confidence taking a big blow.

But there’s no lack of love, lack of communication obviously, but not love, and the latter half of this shows that (in a very nice way 😉) Great work!

Summary: Smut for smuts sake, a little take on Jim and Pam's talking head conversation. "We've had some really nice days together." "Nice morning too." "Beesly! Oh my God!" I think you get where this story is going. (;

Coley just when I thought I was out, you pull me back in. I’m kidding, I was never out and now you’ve left me eagerly awaiting the next chap!

Your characterization is just so good, you’re able to build on the traits Pam and Jim have in the show so naturally that while they’re in such a different scenario they still feel like our Pam and Jim (albeit sassier and more assertive). And Kelly didn’t really need any transformation, she fits right in and your Kelly voice is perfect.

Love the whole scene at the gallery, Pam being so grumpy she doesn’t see at all the heart shaped diamond (I see what you did there ;-) ) was a gag and then Jim blowing her away with a perfect ring.

Such great tense dynamic at Helene’s but you’ve left us with quite the cliffhanger! So no pressure but i do hope the next chapter comes soon!

Since Karen did get so little character development and zero backstory I’m more or less willing to go with however writers characterize her BUT this just feels like the truest Karen I’ve read. One personality trait they did give her was a competitive streak and you took that and painted a very realistic reason why she was so competitive. It makes why she held onto Jim so hard at the end of season 3 make sense, she just wanted a *win* for all her efforts, wanted to be first place for once.

One think I see Karen-lovers in the fandom do is hype her up to be so smart/career driven/ambitious/really going places/etc (and therefore “better” than Pam) but you tempered that nicely. In her high school years she’s above average but never quite a standout, she becomes fluent in French and yet doesn’t really do much with it beside watch French movies without subtitles. She ambitious but at the same time not really pursuing a great passion, settling for selling paper (maybe this is unintentional but I notice you don’t ever say what Karen *really* likes or wants to do career wise, maybe she’s never really figured that out herself).

And of course I love all the other details you added, the sympathy for silver-medalists at the Olympics, Jim having June 10th circled and staring wistfully at it, the ol’ torturing yourself by checking up on the ex routine, all great. You took such a thinly drawn character and in less than 2k words fleshed her out into someone you can sympathize with, someone with hopes and flaws. Fine work, DC! 😁

Author's Response: So, first of all, a review like this from you is... wow! But also, in our many, Many conversations about Karen you have always wisely asserted that she has been misappropriated as "ambitious." I agree that isn't quite right, but I do see her as determined and I tried to capture that here. (Even those times when it's absolutely her own blind spot and potential downfall.) I'm so glad you picked out several of the details that were such a pleasure to write. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and review! I appreciate it.

Oh yes, I love this! The start is great, I can imagine Jim all through S3 constantly repeating in his head that his relationship with Karen is what he wants and failing to convince himself. I love how Karen’s comment very unintentionally sets the whole thing off and that it clears the fog Jim’s in just enough for him that Pam does indeed want to be “more than that” now (I still get mad when Jim brushes off Pam’s coffee invite, she’s asking you out, you dolt!).

Pam saying leaving Roy wasn’t the hardest part of the year then saying what was? Ugh right in the gut (in a good way). And everything else in the car was great.

The “hi” “hey” is one of my all time fave moments and I love you incorporating it in.

Just all around a great treat of a fic that avoids the S3 angst, which I’m all for. Great job!

Author's Response: Thanks NLM! It’s so nice to hear that you liked it. I too still get mad that Jim turns down Pam’s coffee date - he should really pay more attention when everything he has ever hoped for is right in front of him...

Summary:

Inspired by the deleted scene from Dwight Christmas. What happened that night when Jim decided to take the 5 AM bus instead?

Well I love Dwight Christmas partly because it’s one of the few S9 episodes that finishes with Jim and Pam in a solidly happy spot. Now you’ve written this and angstified all that up, so thanks for that!

But seriously, these are exactly the conversations Jim and Pam needed to be having in S9 and clearly were not. I like the exploration of Jim’s fears about Athlead and the acknowledgement that he does depend on Pam being right there all the time and is worried about navigating a new job without her. That said, his way of facing these fears is keeping them to himself, only present a happy face and avoid any disagreements, rather like how we see Pam dealing with everything. Not surprising that our pair who are always so in sync are in sync with their unhealthy coping mechanisms!

While I feel for Jim during his monologue, I do notice he’s not really fully considering things from Pam’s side, he *knows* he is asking a lot from her, but he isn’t quite *understanding* just how much and how tough it’s gonna be for her. And that’s partly seems to be if he does think about that too much he’ll talk himself right out of Athlead.

You also picked up and expanded on a troublesome trait I saw in Jim in S9 (and other points in the series too): which is him keeping things from Pam because he’s so afraid of Pam’s reaction not being the “ideal” one. Though he never did it maliciously or intentionally, Jim kind of set up Pam to fail a lot during S9 and this was one of the main ways.

So in short, even if you made an otherwise happy JAM episode angsty for me, I really love the exploration of these internal issues that contribute to their rift. And I 2nd warriors suggestion of having a follow up around Paper Airplanes with them actually addressing these issues.

I can only imagine this is how Pam felt that next day, that maybe spring can mean a new beginning but then that desk was empty and a part of her heart was gone 😭 there are many great Mays to come, Pam! Great work is such few words!

Finally getting around to reading this and I’m completely hooked. I adore a good Historic AU and this already has instantly transported me with its language and visuals. I love your Pam Sass and how Jim is immediately smitten. Your civil war Roy is terrible and I’m kinda here for it XD . And what a cliffhanger! I have no choice but to keep reading.

Author's Response: Thank you so much NLM! I really enjoy making Roy out to be a terrible guy. ;)

Really really loving the little office touches here, Pam standing before him is secondhand blue silk saying “I can’t” (casino night), Jim tapping on the door frame after making dinner plans (the job), and of course Jim destined to be a paper man in Pennsylvania. And now we have the big Cocktails/Negotiation confrontation from Roy. Amazing work so far!

Author's Response: I love that you picked up on all those. Even though this is completely pre-show AU, I love fitting those in where they work. Thank you so much for reading and taking the time to review!

Pam: “There’s no changing curtain.”
Me: “Oh my god there’s no changing curtain.”

First, going back a chapter, loved the appearance of Bob Vance, and the descriptions of their wedding was so sweet but also amped up the anticipation.

This chapter though, you really have transported us back 150 years but have flawlessly kept Jim and Pam’s connection, their humor with each other and how they genuinely like talking to each other, and of course the simmering attraction in all their interactions. The undressing, hot. Everything after? Even hotter, thank god Pam now knows how wrong her mother was,

Smoldering as this was, what awaits in Philly I fear isn’t going to be near as pleasant as Miss Marlene’s was. I can’t wait for an update though!

Author's Response:

Me: “Oh my god there’s no changing curtain.” -- I laughed so hard at this.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad the relationship is translating into this time period. I'm also glad the love scene worked! I was encouraged by the chat last week, what can I say. ;)

Yes, Philadelphia is going to be a challenge for sure. Thank you!
