We haven't posted challenges in a little while so here are 2 new ideas that will hopefully generate some great stories.
The first challenge was suggested by stele, and is called Reality TV Hit. The documentary airs and it becomes something of a reality TV hit, as everyone in fake TV land becomes as fanatic as we in real TV land. The story opens just after "Casino Night" has aired, complete with the confession & the kiss. Time has passed between the moment when that was filmed and the airdate. Jim and Pam are not together. I'll let you decide the circumstances. So, what happens? How does Jim deal with having his heart broken in front of everyone? Does Pam come by to visit? Do they re-establish contact? Is Jim mobbed by a huge crowd of weeping women and carried off to Utah for a polygamous mass wedding?
Our second challenge was suggested by thedoors, and is titled Talent Show. This challenge requires writers to create an alternate ending to season 2. Instead of having a casino night, Michael decides to hold a talent show as a "fun-raiser" and emotions start to run high.
If you want to submit more challenge ideas, please email us at morethanthat1@gmail.com.

Here's why:
They are really fun, and I think we can all agree that we are having a BALL with them, but we don't want to overwhelm our authors either! So from now on we're going to have a system in place where all challenge ideas should be submitted through the "Contact Us" button on the top menu. Every Tuesday, one of the admins will post one or two of those challenges and post a news item about it. When submitting challenges, please take the time to become familiar with challenge themes already posted. Themes that are very similiar will most likely not be posted, so try to be really creative with it, and come up with some great ideas. I think the Zombie challenge is an excellent example of thinking outside the box.
The quoted text is from a previous news item, from about a week and a half a go. I know it needs to be explained on the challenges page, but I just don't have the php skills to edit that particular page.
Please remember if you want to add a challenge, you need to submit the idea to us first by the "Contact Us" form.

Feel free to hold off posting anymore stories until you have seen the TOS.

I just wanted to point out that we have two new skins up on the site now, my take 6 or 7 of the dark theme, version 2, which I hope is a lot better to read this time around, plus we also had a lovely header graphic submitted by captainoats, which you can find on version 3!
If anyone else is handy with the graphics, feel free to submit header graphics to us via the contact form. If you do submit something, the dimensions should be 750x200 px.
Awesome, thanks again captainoats!

Obviously, if you've linked to fics on journals and such, it would be advisable to edit them with the new server links, because eventually my old host will kill my old subdomain.
Also, I'm sorry about the downtime today. Something seriously odd happened with mySQL, I really don't understand exactly what, but it appears to have resolved itself, let's just hope it doesn't happen again!

Ok that was easier than I expected. Should be all better now. :-)
Thanks guys for being so patient, I feel terrible about springing this on you in the middle of the night.

We've only had a couple submitted so far, so this week I'm taking one user submitted idea, plus an idea of my own that I had saved for the 100th member celebration, which never happened due to the crazy amount of challenges being posted. So please, remember to submit a challenge idea, we need heaps more!
Now on to the challenges!
2036, submitted by TV_buffy.
Jim In Charge, submitted by sicokitty.

I apologise in advance if anyone has any difficulties, it should resolve itself within the day.

Just a few words about the challenges.
They are really fun, and I think we can all agree that we are having a BALL with them, but we don't want to overwhelm our authors either! So from now on we're going to have a system in place where all challenge ideas should be submitted through the "Contact Us" button on the top menu. Themes that are very similiar will most likely not be posted, so try to be really creative with it, and come up with some great ideas. I think the Zombie challenge is an excellent example of thinking outside the box.
So from now on, it would be very much appreciated if we could do this. :-) Also, from now, challenges from non-members will not be accepted, and will be deleted. This must be a bug in the software, as the challenge feature should only be available to members. eta: The bug has been fixed, you must be logged in to add a challenge.
If you have any troubles, let me know! Thanks guys! :-)

Kath from GMMR is challenging our writers to come up with a story where Pam & Jim are trying to keep their new relationship under wraps. It should be fun to read.
I think maybe we should hold off on new challenges for a few days just to give writers the chance to come up with little gems for the numerous challenges we have going on at the moment. We wouldn't want to miss on more steamy Jim and Pam, zombie attacks on Scranton, or Jam snowed in and trapped in a confined space, would we? ;)

The challenges have been fantastic! So many good stories have come out them, and we have two new ones that need to be mentioned, Steam and Zombie Attack.
For anyone who is new to writing, and is looking for someone to beta their work, check out our group of beta volunteers, you can contact any of the volunteers through their profile, they're only too happy to help.

I just wanted to direct your attention to two new challenges that have been added. Tizzy proposes Stranded, a fic where Jim and Pam would get stranded somewhere where they are not supposed to be.
I am proposing a challenge that is totally out of season, but I think the brutal heat may have gotten to my head. I would like to see Jim and Pam in some snowy situation. I'm impatiently awaiting some cooling fic.

I hope you're all finding the new categorisation a little easier to follow. It's pretty obvious at this point that the administrators have decided to allow the other pairings to remain on the archive. We weren't comfortable with excluding them, but we still need to reiterate that this site remains primarily a Pam/Jim archive. I hope all your concerns with the integration of other pairings etc have now been addressed, and that the new system gives them the same respect with regards to categorising that we gave the Jim/Pam fics.
For the "Other" category, your moderator will be swestworld, and she will be your first point of contact in regards to any issues in that category.
The submission rules have also been updated- all authors should read these before posting any more stories. The administrators reserve the right to edit the submission rules at any point if they feel that something isn't working out. We have the members' best interest in mind, and will do our best to take on any comments/suggestions, if we do need to make any major changes to the rules, but ultimately the final decision rests with the administrators.
Please understand that when we jumped on this venture, we did not expect it to grow so quickly in the space of a few days. We are most definitely still learning, and we hope you can approach us with a level of understanding to that. All suggestions so far have been greatly appreciated, and we'll do our best to take them all on board.
Quick note about adding categories to your story: when you do so, please ensure that you've added both the upper level category (Jim and Pam or Other) and the subcategory (Past, Future etc). You're able to add multiple subcategories if you're not sure your story fits in one specific subcat.
Have fun with it, guys! Don't forget to check out the recent submissions to the Rain challenge, they're great!
ETA: Sort by rating has now been added as an option to the category search. If you run into troubles using it, do let me know.
--sicokitty on July 15, 2006 08:47 pm 1 Comments
If you re-cat your own story before we get to it, make sure that you select both a primary category (Jim and Pam, or Other) AND a subcategory, so that both are visible on your story's description page. Keep this in mind for all new submissions as well.
We're taking these steps to simplify categorization, and to make it easier for you to find the fics you want to read. We hope it's helpful in both ways.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through my profile page, or use the Contact Us link above.
ETA: Retagging is complete. Please check your stories to ensure they are tagged as you would tag them yourself. Please note that the definition given for Alternate Universe has changed. The biggest grey area as far as tagging goes involves the ensemble pieces. Any ensemble piece with significant Jim-Pam interaction has been tagged "Jim and Pam" so that readers looking for that can find it easily. If you would prefer that your ensemble piece were categorized as "Other", please feel free to do so.

Rain, which opens up all kinds of doors for a wet Pam/Jim fic.
Road Trip, uhh backseat action definitely comes to mind.
I hope that gives everyone some fresh ideas!

Second! I've added in all the people who offered to co admin as follows-
Morning Angel
Pixel
Shannanagin
You guys will be overseeing four categories, Canon, Prequel, Future and General.
Nomadshan
Swestworld
xoxoxo
You guys will be overseeing four categories also, Missing Moments, Post Episode, AU, and Other Pairings.
I will leave it up to you guys to come to a conclusion how you want attack the whole quality control issue, but I think the best way might just be to rely on the ratings from yourselves, and act accordingly.
Our first challenge was issued, and we already have two fantastic responses aleady, so check them out!!

I honestly meant no harm with my comment about not wanting slash fic on here. I wasn't trying to exclude any specific genre of fic, it was a natural instinct for me to not want it, since it quicks me out. So I'm sorry about that, I didn't really think before I typed that out.
So we can go with one of two options:
1) We make this site strictly Pam and Jim
or
2) Under the current General category, we open up two sub categories, General Canon, for other canon pairings and General Non-Canon(or fanon, whichever makes more sense to everyone). That way, if you want to read it, you can, and if you don't, you just don't click on those categories. Because I do agree that it isn't fair to exclude certain genres, and that fanfic is a creative expression, and not everyone writes canon. I've read some pretty good non canon stuff myself, so I wouldn't want to discriminate against that.
I really want to try to cater to everyone, and keep everyone happy and comfortable about posting here.
Now the validations thing again.
I think the best point someone brought up about why we should have them validated, is to ensure they are properly rated and categorised. Plus we really do want to make this a quality fanfic site, but no, not to the point where heads would explode or anything like that. For the most part I think we like pretty much everything we read, and that there are only a handful of poorly written fics. What I would like to do though, if we get to the point where a fic does get rejected, that the author is at least offered advice on how to improve their work, and possibly try to hook them up with a good beta reader.
Or what we could do is rather than have each story wait for validation, which honestly, could become a pain, is just have the co admins go through the archive regularly and ensure that the fics are properly rated etc and meet the standards of the archive. I think that might be an easier alternative, just because I would personally hate to have to wait for my fic to be validated in order for people to read it. I don't want any authors turned off from wanting to post their story here.
Thanks again for all the feedback, there are obviously a few things I didn't think of, so this has been great!
I'll be contacting the people who offered to help in a non techie way today, to see if they are still willing to help. If you haven't put up your hand yet, and you want to help out with validating fics, let me know!!
--sicokitty on July 11, 2006 02:53 am 11 Comments
Also, 30 members!! Awesome!
Thanks for all the feedback on the categories and genres. I've started building a tentative idea for each, but it's gonna need some work. You can select which category you want your fic to appear in, then you can select multiple genres for it to be related to. This is really helpful with searches, because say I'm looking for a future fic with angst where Pam and Jim get drunk, I can do that! So while the categories may seem more general, assoicating the genres will narrow it down more specifically. But, keep with the feedback, I'm pretty flexible and very clueless with this stuff.
I'm pretty much happy to add anyone who offered to help as admin. But what I need to know before I go on, is do we want to have each and every story require validation before it's posted? This will be great for the quality of the archive, but it could become annoying if the submitted fics aren't reviewed and approved quickly enough. I think we'd need at least 6-10 people just to review submitted fics, so that the process is done quickly. I think I have four or five people so far who have offered to do non techie stuff, and this would be the non techie stuff I'd like you to do if we stick with the review process.
So we need to decide- yes or no to validating all submissions?
nomadshan, I don't think you offered, but would you be willing to come on board to create and maintain the categories and genres? I pretty much used ALL of your suggestions and you did say you loved sorting stuff!
--sicokitty on July 10, 2006 03:06 am 43 Comments
I have not done anything in regards to setting up the categories and genres as yet, because sorting gives me a headache. Please feel free to make suggestions, in fact, I insist!!
The current submission rules are the ones that came with the software. I would appreciate it if all authors could take the time to read through it, and give me their feedback on what needs to be added/deleted.
Lastly, I would love it if a couple people would be able to come on board as co admins to assist me with setting things up, and the daily running of the archive, although I think it should pretty much run itself. I would prefer if the co admins were authors or very active readers. I need keen eyes to pick up the things I know I'll miss. If you want to help out, use the contact form to email me, or drop a comment on this news piece.
Yay!! Write some stories!
