Wow...that scene could not have fit any more perfectly. And I loved that they both realized it (how could they not??) And...how could Jim reject Pam's card like that!! FNB is finally making an effort!! (even if it is rather small)
p.s. I only had time to read one story/chapter tonight and your won because you have me completely hooked. (and I love your writing style)
Author's Response:
Ooh, I'm glad my chapter won. :o) I don't know what made me think of that scene, but when I did, it was like a lightbulb!
Thanks for reviewing!

1. I have an irrational love of Robert Downey, Jr., so yay!
2. The fact that Karen hates the other woman makes me laugh. Does that make me a bad person? If so, I think I'm okay with it.
3. I love this. More, please!
Author's Response:
Yay for RDJ love! And no - I'm glad you laughed that Karen hated the other woman! I was going for a bit of dramatic irony with that one. :o)
Thanks for reviewing!

So I'm normally a Karen hater. I sheepishly admit that because I know its a petty way to feel. But this latest chapter (and really, the way you've handled her through this entire story) has endeared her to me in a way I didn't think possible. So kudos to you! At the same time, am I glad she's now out of Jim's picture? Yeppers. Yeppers, I am. Eaglerly awaiting your next update...
Author's Response:
You are not petty for hating Karen; you'd be petty if you hated her because her hair's flat. :o) I'm glad you were sympathetic to her here - it's what I was going for!
Thanks for reviewing!

Wow I just got into this story and I read all the chapters in one sitting. I looove it! Guhh...so good. I love everything but I know authors like more details so um...specifically... I really liked the dream part - it was very vivid and descriptive and it felt just like a dream so good job. And the breakup scene, of course. Jim's reaction to the show was perfection and so was his reaction to the card - it seems to be what could be going on in his head right now. I hope you update soon!
Author's Response: Thanks so much - glad the dream rang true for you (the rest as well) -- thanks again!

Love this...I really hope on the show that Karen pulls something like this off, realizes it just isn't there and ends it with compassion and dignity. You've given her a compassion and maturity here that few people possess, but I still think it's a fair take, and anyway even if you do give her a shade too much credit it's a refereshing change from too little.
And Pam's note...I was thinking before I read this chapter that she needed to be braver, clearer, becuase that note was too vague and too easy for Jim to interpret just like yu made him interpret it. There's a lesson, I think; if you're going to open your heart, open it all the damn way. I'll be refreshing often until I see Chapter 9. Thank you so much for generously sharing your talent.
Author's Response:
I really hope so, too, brokenloon. I deliberately wrote the note as unclear just so that Jim wouldn't really know what to think of it - glad it came off that way. (I was afraid his confusion might come off as contrived.)
Thank you so much for your thoughtful reviews.

dammit, girl7 - don't make me feel sorry for her. But so many kudos to you for using that Ally reference - how totally totally cool - you got to know how much I love to work cultural references into fanfic.
Only thing I love more? Reading the parts where you bring them together. You know you totally rock at it! :-)
Author's Response: Glad you liked it! :o) You're killing me with Squirrel, you know - so good. [/Jlm]

Oh wow. (Is that my response to every chapter?) I had stopped watching Ally McBeal by the time RDJr. was on there, so I never thought their innocuous viewing of an old TV show would tie in to their relationship in this way. Go Karen for realizing it, and especially for this line: I don't want to be the girl you have to really...try to feel it for. That is the exact right way to describe how Jim feels about Karen, even though he can't admit it to himself. *hugs Karen AND Jim*
And poor Pam. Here she is, making (what to her is) a huge grand gesture, really putting herself out there -- only to get absolutely no outward reaction from Jim. At least Jim's grand gesture got a reaction from Pam. Pam's attempt to reach out just leaves her further in limbo. Poor girl. *hugs Pam*
Excellent update. Can't wait to see how you envision this situation getting resolved! More, please!
Author's Response:
I'd stopped watching it then, too, but I was hearing such good things about his performance that I tuned in and was immediately hooked. He was such a great character. Sigh. (On the re-watch, though, I was thinking that someone needed to smack Ally.)
I'm glad you felt sympathetic for everybody - that's what I was going for!
Thanks for reviewing --

Amazing, as usual. As I said before, the way you write each character's thoughts and reactions fit them perfectly. You really know how to sock it to the grief bone. And I mean that in a good way.
Author's Response:
Thank you so much. Hopefully I will sock it to the angry bone in the next chapter, and then to the...um, smut bone in the final one. (There is something just intrinsically wrong with that phrase, "smut bone." Yikes.)
Thanks for reviewing!

(Would it be mean to do a happy dance now? Ok, sorry)
I think I am the only female I know who never watched Ally McBeal. But now I sort of wish I did. Karen saying "God, I wish she'd just go away." I think that is what they call 'irony'. Hee!
Author's Response:
I would totally doci-do (is that how you spell it?) with you right now! :o)
I watched Ally McBeal in the beginning, then stopped because I got sick of her "pouty Ally walks" (as my husband called them - he watched the show himself before we got married. Hee). When Robert Downey Jr. was on, I tuned back in and he made it totally worth it. The scene I referenced in here was JK-level killer. Wait, I take that back. :o)
And yeah, I was going for a bit of dramatic irony with that line....
Thanks for reviewing!

As I was reading this "Let Love In" started playing on my iPod. Ironic, no? Serendipitous, I think. You worked the Ally scene in perfectly. And their breakup was soft, yet powerfully poignant. You so own me. I am Dwight and you are offering me mints. More story Starry? Yes, please!
Author's Response:
I'm glad you thought the Ally scene worked - when I re-watched it today (for the first time in years), I was shocked at how much RDJ reminded me of JK in terms of his...utter torturedness. Hee. Seriously, though, he kicked ass in that scene (even if someone seriously needed to slap Ally McBeal. Seriously).
Your comparing yourself to Dwight and the mints made me laugh right out loud. :o) Thanks for everything!

This is just lovely. The "Okay" at the end is a great call-back to the ending of Casino Night shown in Gay Witch Hunt. Of course, I like the result of this "Okay" better than in GWH!!
Poor Pam; she had such hopes for that clover & note, but Jim is determined not to misunderstand and be even more broken.
Angsty! I look forward to more.
Author's Response:
Yay! I was hoping that connection would be clear! *hands you a fruit basket and a dundie* Seriously, I'm so glad you caught that; makes my whole night!
I'm working toward making up for the angst; I promise.
Thanks so much for being such a consistent reviewer; you rock!

I love a good cliffhanger! Nice send off for Roy. Can't wait for more!!!
Author's Response:
Man, I am just aching over Roy; he killed me in that scene when he went to pick up his paycheck...guh.
Thanks for the review!

oh agony. But amazing I'm kind of stunned how you worked it back to that moment, because now its like I can see every little underlining emotion that went on when he said those things. Fantastic.
Author's Response: Yay - thank you so much! I'm working toward making up for all that angst...

Wow. You own me. Having Pam put herself in Jim's position at Booze Cruise was just heart wrentching. I loved the way you incorporated the memories into the chapter. Wow. Amazing chapter. Just freaking amazing.
Author's Response:
Why thank you, my friend! (I'm getting close to watching your video soon, BTW - and you know what that means....)
Thanks for everything!

I like how you're presenting this story from both characters' points of view. Keep it coming!
Author's Response:
Thanks! The point of view thing has tripped me up a few times here, because it's hard to vacillate between them consistently, I swear....
Thanks for reviewing!

See, now, I'm literally holding my breath.
Because WOW.
Please don't let me turn blue in the face.
*sigh*
I'm glad that Pam's finally realizing just how much Jim put himself through. The question is whether or not she's that masochistic. Because Jim had to be to put up with all that.
There's argument about being the bigger person and just wanting the one you love to be happy, and then there's Jim and Pam, who I'm beginning to wonder if they get off on this level of angst.
I hope not.
BRING THEM BACK FROM THE EDGE!!!
hee.
thx.
cheers.
--Lex
Author's Response:
Oh my god - I hope you're not all blue now! :oD Your review made me laugh: "I'm beginning to wonder if they get off on this level of angst..."
Maybe they don't, but the writers damn sure do! (And okay, I thought it was heartbreaking and sexy when JK just stopped talking and leaned on the vending machine. Guh.)
Working on bringing them back, I swear!
Thanks for reviewing!

AWESOME! I love the history you've created here and how you've tied it to the present. I can't wait to see how Jim reacts to this. Oy...
Author's Response: Starry Dreamer totally helped me come up with the stuff that was in the box; I was at a total loss there. I'm working toward a resolution; I promise...
Date: April 09, 2007 09:59 pm Title: Chapter 7
I can't wait for the next chapter!! I'm so sorry that Pam is going through this agony, but at least she realizes that Jim had to deal with this too--hopefully the letter warms him up a bit!
Author's Response:
I know; I'd really love to see/hear Pam articulate on the show that she realizes in full what he went through. I do feel for her, because the poor girl has had her share of heartbreak this season as well...
Thanks again for the review!

Just finished chapter6 and that was amazing! That break room scene broke my heart and you just broke it all over again...off to read the next one!!
Author's Response:
I never know what to say when reviewers tell me I broke their heart, because it just seems mean to respond, "Yay! I broke your heart!" (I'm totally kidding.) I'm glad it moved you, because that scene was one of the catalysts for this fic, actually.
Thanks for reviewing!

I am in love with this chapter. We're going to register for china together, seriously. Love.
Author's Response:
Okay...how do you feel about Vera Wang's latest pattern? Because I kinda like it. ;o)
Thanks so much for reviewing - and I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying it!

Wow - you brought out the big guns: that heartbreaking toast from the BC deleted scene? It hurts just to think about it! Really, if there were ever a question about JK's acting chops, that moment would absolutely settle it. And you made it vividly painful all over again...(and what's with me, that I enjoyed it?)
What if you had to make a toast to him and Karen because they were engaged?
That sentence just galvanizes the parallel between S2 Jim and S3 Pam. Ouch.
So, this cryptic note...curious to see how that goes over. Or not. (Oh and, Van Gogh as the image for a moment of compulsion, driven by unrequited love? Very clever.)
Author's Response:
Big guns indeed - I did not cry when I saw Casino Night (though I did gasp and point, exclaiming, "Oh my god, he's crying..."), but then, last May I wasn't the fan I am now. (That episode made a believer - and a hussy - out of me.)
The scene that first brought me to tears was the toast from the deleted scene - sat there and cried for Jim like a big baby. Such an amazing performance from JK - kills me that they deleted it.
And if you're demented for enjoying it, then save me a padded room next to you, because...yeah.
Thank you for the millionth awesome, insightful review (and for the feedback prior to posting as well) -- I would send James Purefoy over with a personal thank you note, but...well...
Oh hell. Why did I have to even mention him? The mole and the shoulders and the eyeliner and the "I'll not rise from this bed until...."
(Stopping myself now.)

EEEE!!!! I'm so proud of Pam! My heart was breaking right along with her's when she was going through that box...I can't believe she even did that in the middle of the night!! Wow....yay Pam!
Author's Response:
Woo hoo! (I love reviews that squee!) I was thinking that she'd have to do it in the middle of the night before she could lose her nerve, you know?
Thanks for reviewing!

Nice. I love how Pam finds a memory of her own to give to Jim. Now, if only she gives him time to sort it out for himself, and doesn't run off to somewhere that feels far away.
Author's Response:
She will not run away...because I am not Greg Daniels, nor do I have a perverse desire to torture people for an extended period of time. Hee.
Thanks for reviewing!

Oooh. Wow. And it all comes back to the four leaf clover. Nicely done.
And you know this -- It was almost like a compulsion, the sudden need she felt to go with this impulse, no matter how much it terrified her to consider the possible consequences. -- was exactly what Jim was feeling on Casino Night.
Can't wait for the next chapter, seriously!
Author's Response:
Absolutely, lapdogdesign - thank you! I'm trying to emphasize how much she understands where Jim was that night, what it was like for him...because i think it's an important part of their eventually coming together.
Thank you so much for the review!
Date: April 09, 2007 08:16 pm Title: Chapter 7
Wow, you made the toast from The Booze Cruise hurt even more, if that is even possible. This was what he'd lived with for all those years - the same thing that she felt was absolutely draining the life out of her after having struggled with it for a mere ten months.
I'm so glad to see Pam taking some action -- I sure hope we don't get dragged through pain this intense in the next few episodes, or I don't think I'll make it to the season finale.
And let me just say again, I'm glad you aren't stringing us along until May for resolution. Gah!
Author's Response:
Listen, the screen caps that were posted on the JK thread a few days ago totally motivated the BC deleted scene call back; I keep flipping to one of them for inspiration, and it never fails. (Thank you, JK, for your ability to emote so well...)
I will so not string you along until May for the resolution, I swear!
Thanks, as always, for reviewing!
