"She knows now that she was frightened that afternoon because she could see this night from there, but she wasn't sure how they would manage to cover the distance."
Wherever you are, I desperately hope you're still writing.

All of those surnames come from the town of Heilbronn, a town in southern Germany near Stuttgart. Halpert is a variation on a number of similar names, and yes, Jewish :)

God, this is just the best story ever. Such a mature vision of what they could be and how perfectly they could evolve, with astonishingly good writing. I want to live in a world like this. Would you write the next several years of my life for me? Lol. Thanks for putting this out in the world. Is there a larger collection of your writing somewhere, with other fandoms too? Or maybe some non-fandom writing? I’d read either/both.

Hey, Tea - Went to a concert on Saturday night. While waiting for the show to start, Extraordinary Machine was being piped into the room over the speakers. Heard A Better Version of Me and thought immediately of this gem, still one of my faves.

fiona apple is my absolute favorite, so absolutely i love this. and in a wstful way it reminds me of my first time in the city (college) and all the adjusting that goes on. (although i wish i would have had a jim to send me CDs and sex toys) thank you so much for this, YOU are an extraordinary machine for writing this!

Wow...this is perfect! I love the way Jim proposed - it seems so true to his character. I wish we could have been able to see something like this in the show...but you writing it is just as good, if not better

This was such a great summary of Pam's 3 months at Pratt and NYC. There are so many aspects of your story that I loved so I'll just pick a couple of them to gush on. First, the proposal was simple but oh so sweet. The fact that they exchanged presents while away from each other was just so them. And of course, how they're all over each other when they see each other, steamy!! Overall, I loved that you addressed so many things about their relationship. Great, great job!

Like goofy and geeky and you'd never expect it, but if you think about it a little, you're, like, sure he knows how to mess. you. up. He does, right?
this might possibly be one of my favorite lines EVER in the history of MTT fanfics.

LOVE the Jewishness of this fic, I always imagined Jim being Jewish and this was perfect. I love all the little old biddies fussing over him and GUH he speaks Hebrew :)
Author's Response: Hello, Hannah - I just found your reviews. He doesn't so much "speak" Hebrew as regurgitates it. :) Kind of like me... I'm glad that my slightly different take on Jim's background pleased you. Thanks for your kind words.

Coming back to review one of my favorite stories. As someone who has gone to grad school, I totally appreciate the subtle way you show Pam progress. Yes, I was the same person afterward, but I felt like I sort of found myself. I love how you deal with Pam's development as a someone finding herself and developing her talents, but still being the same Pam that we all fell in love with. And I should mention the title is PERFECT.
Now that the show has shown us a different version of Pam's time away, I'm still longing for wanting to see Pam's journey. I have that here. Thank you so much for that!

I have no idea how I managed to miss this story, but I can tell you it is, without a doubt, one of the best I've ever read here. I wanted to stop and leave a review for each individual chapter but this story draws you in to Pam and Jim's world so well that I couldn't bear to pull myself out of it, even for a moment. Just wonderful :)
Author's Response: Thank you so much, shootingstars. I'm glad you enjoyed it, even if it looks like I'm going to have to change the designation to AU in a couple of weeks. :)

Yes, exactly. :)

What I love the most about this story (and if I can't pick the amazing Jim/Pam stuff), it's how you inject little moments of comedy that make it feel so authentic. Like Jim sending Dwight's stapler, and Pam taking pictures of it at all the famous New York landmarks. That's beautiful and perfect.

I love this. I love it so much.
Reading this fic makes me feel closer to the characters. I feel like I understand Jim and Pam (and Jim/Pam) better after reading your work in general and this story in particular. Their voices just seem so right.

This is so beautiful. I'm usually a very good reviewer, commenting on sentences and structure and tone, but today I'm just an ardent admirer. You've created a world that seems right, in-character and yet heightened, somehow. It's a beautiful way to expand their world and give them the happily-ever-after we want while still staying grounded in reality. I love your work.

So, I've read this like 20 times - it's a go to "good read" when I get bored at work (which happens more than I should admit on the "national internet") and I realized that I never asked you the question that always comes up in my head when I'm reading it - Do you actually have the mixes written down (songs, not just artists) that Jim makes for Pam? I'd love to have a musical companion for the chapters :)
Author's Response: I won't tell a soul, Jenn. :) To answer your question, no, I don't have the mixes all laid out, but, I did have some songs in mind for the artists I listed in the story. For the "Because You Are in New York and Are Cooler than Me" mix, it's most likely "Sister Jack" - Spoon, "First Night" - The Hold Steady, "Blame It on Cain" - Elvis Costello, almost anything off of Horses for Patti Smith, "Summer Babe (Winter Version)" - Pavement, "Be My Baby" - The Ronettes, *definitely* "Myriad Harbour" - The New Pornographers, and "Keep the Car Running" by The Arcade Fire. The "Let's Murder Andy Bernard" mix would include "Death or Glory" - The Clash, "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" - The Pogues, "Violet" - Hole, and "Firestarter" - The Prodigy. The "I am So Going to Tear Your Clothes off..." mix would include anything off of Dummy by Portishead, "Brandy Alexander" - Feist, *definitely* "House of Cards" - Radiohead (the lyrics are quite Pam & Jim S2 appropriate - 1st lines "I don't want to be your friend, I just want to be your lover."), and "Lay It Down" - Al Green. Finally, the "Have We Lost Our F-ing Minds?" mix would include anything off of Maxinque - Tricky, I don't have a strong opinion on the Beck, "Boyz" - M.I.A, "Myxomatosis" - Radiohead (I'm thinking Jim likes Radiohead. He would.), and "Professional Widow" - Tori Amos. There would, of course, be more songs on each mix, but that's the basic idea. There's probably enough songs here to make a short "Better Version of Me" mix, actually...

Wow. You are good! I love how realistically you have Pam evolve into a city girl/artist without undermining her personality. Like in Chapter 1 when she gets asked for directions because she looks like a New Yorker but then does a dorky dance in her apartment - such a nice touch. I loved your take on Jim's brothers and Kelly's "mess. you. up." Whew. Keep writing! Please!

She knows now that she was frightened that afternoon because she could see this night from there, but she wasn't sure how they would manage to cover the distance.
I LOVE the idea that she's kind of known all along that she would end up with Jim, but had no idea how it would happen. That feels so real.
"I'm not doing this alone this time."
Guh. Love. Sorry, your stories leave me not-so-good with the words.

this is my favorite version of a proposal story so far. it's not overly romantic, but he still plans it out and is preciously sweet and i love it. i LOVE that Pam is friends with old Jewish women in her apartment building and that Jim is Jewish. i absolutely love Jonathan, and I love seeing how different people write him, but this is just precious. how he teases Jim and then is just perfectly big brother to Pam. I love it. I'm off to read the third chapter. :)
