I haven't read this since you first posted it, and now I can't believe I didn't think before how much this reminds me of one of my favorite short stories, "The Chrysanthemums." At least Pam didn't see it thrown away. :)

Author's Response: Have to admit - I had to Google to see what The Chrysanthemums was. It's been about eleventy thousand years since I've read any Steinbeck, and don't think I ever read that story...but I will definitely check it out now ;-) Anyway, thanks for the re-read (always flattering!) and the comparison (somehow, I gotta believe ol' JS did it better than I, lol!)

Ooooooooooooh Karen is sneaky, wanting to introduce Will to Pam lol.

Author's Response: Yeah, little bit. More desperate than sneaky maybe? Thanks!

bucolic
Niiiiiiice. Cool word to use! So appropriate for PBS re-airings of some BBC shows.

‘I seriously doubt she has class on Sunday night, Jim.’
LMAO. This just killed me- I totally heard Karen's voice in this phrase.

The plot thickened
I really appreciate how concise your writing is; so much said with one short phrase.

Author's Response:

You know, I actually did base that PBS description on about a dozen of those mysteries I've seen. They really do tend to be like that, lol. Glad Karen's voice came across - I have much more practice doing Pam/Jim, and hoped I'd hit the right note with her.

And thanks so much, variella - 'concise' is a favorite word of mine. (Though clearly, that doesn't show in this response ;-)

Exhausted and mostly incoherent but stopping by to say sigh.  He wuvs her - and I you for writing this. :)

Author's Response: Sigh back at you! Happy to hear this worked for you, despite the exhaustion...thanks so much, xoxoxo!

Author's Response: Thanks, Lexie (handing you a cyber-hankie ;-)

This story, since it was so true to these characters, really makes me wonder AGAIN...why the heck was Jim with Karen for so long?

I love how he takes care of the pot as carefully as he always used to take care of Pam.

Nice job.

Author's Response: Yeah, that relationship did drag on too long (for BOTH Jim and Karen) - it would have made more sense to me if it had ended after TR - even if after that it took J/P months longer to find their way to each other. Oh well. Thanks much, jkfan9989!

I love everything this fic chooses to be. It's perfect because you could just drop this moment in between those two episodes and it fits like a glove.

You would think that Karen would have picked up on the big flashing sign that was saying "THIS IS NOT GOING TO WORK" but she wanted so badly not to give up. And poor Jim - thinking he needs to do this in order to move on. It's painful to see Jim and Pam so in the dark about each other, but knowing how it all ends up makes it possible to enjoy and appreciate these heartbreaking moments up until then. Thank you for this, Colette - it was just perfect.

Author's Response: I really wanted this to mesh with what we saw on the show - not reinvent or 'correct' it. That period was so fraught and full of inarticulated feelings - ripe to expand upon ;-) So, I love that you thought this fit in with those episodes. And yeah, it was often hard to believe that Karen didn't clue in earlier - I think she kind of did, but denial is a potent thing, I guess. Thanks so much, kells - love that you liked this so much!

Yay.  Happy day.  I love the days I log on and you have posted a new story.  I actually grabbed my tea and a muffin before I sat down to read...it's like getting a new book :)

Of course I love this.  You've described Jim's discomfort, and near fear about being around Pam perfectly.  Poor Pam - embarrassed about her gift, and isn't it like a caddy woman to dismiss it so quickly like Karen did?  Ugh.  I think we've all met/dealt with women like that.

I cannot wait for more.  Boy it would be nice to come home to an update after work later ;)  Just saying....

Author's Response:

Tea and a muffin is high praise! Thanks, kells! Glad you think this feels true to those two at that point.

You know, I'm really pleased, and a bit surprised, that readers seem to be liking this - really wasn't sure if S3 angst was what anyone wanted to read these days. Maybe remembering the misery makes the current situation that much sweeter?

Once again you slay me, Colette. Your stories always provide me with such vivid imagery yet you don't take 3 paragraphs to describe a feeling and I appreciate that very much. I can't wait to see where you take this and I'll be following every step of the way!

Author's Response: Thanks, elly! Love hearing the feelings come through for you without too much verbage. Much appreciated ;-)

Oh the tight rope Jim has to walk now that he's told Karen that it was just a crush!  I like what you're doing with this.

Just when I thought it was going to be another boring Monday, there is a new story from you. I like the setting of this story for Jim and Pam, this was a very delicate and awkward time for them so it will be interesting to see what twist you take. This is a great visual: his expression must have resembled a child's, just told he was going to the doctor’s office for a vaccination

So happy to see a new story from you, Colette!  Can't wait to see where you are going with this, although the "Angst" I see in the "Genre" section makes me nervous.  I seem to remember you always write happy JAM stories though, so I'll hope for the best!!

Author's Response: Actually, I've written my fair share of angst-fests too...though, since the S4 finale, I did tend to the slap-happy side of things. This one will be kind of sadder though  - i.e., it is set mid-S3 and it's not AU. (Sort of in the vein of my fic The New Happy, if you saw that one.) But, hell, we know it all turned out okay, right? ;-) Anyway...many thanks, Abigail! Hope you'll keep reading.
