Oh, Catie, this is just gorgeous.  I stealth-read this at work yesterday and didn't have time to leave a review, but it brought tears to my eyes.  It's strange - you made me feel so happy for Pam in a whole new way.  Falling in love like this - where the mundane turns sublime - is just the best thing in the world.  I love the idea of her thinking she's fallen as far as she can go and then falling deeper.  The last paragraph is just...::sigh::

Author's Response: Sweetpea!!! You are just the best! Your review made my day. I just started a new job today, and I\'ve been stressed...but to come home to this is just great! And yes, you definitely know it\'s love when the mundane turns sublime. And I have no doubt that Jim and Pam are totally reveling in the everyday things (like sitting on the couch watching a movie, holding hands) because they were forbidden before. Anyway, thanks again!!!

So glad you posted this.  This is still my favorite line because it's exactly what happened to Karen - the deleted scenes really showed HER transformation from Stamford to Scranton:

She tries to pinpoint the moment when being near him went from making her feel bubbly and young to brittle and needy

But what you added is just brilliant, especially this:

But she doesn’t miss what was. She misses what could have been

Yes.  Just perfect.

Author's Response:

So glad you convinced me to post!  I know Karen angst isn't exactly everyone's favorite topic, so I've been pretty pleased that people liked it.  Also, I think posting and talking to you gave me the last kick in the pants to stay up til 3 a.m. and finish that chapter of Shift.  And then I was felled by a nasty cold.  But it's ok, because I finished it!  WHOO!  So, have I told you lately you're awesome?  Sweetpea, you're awesome.

And oh yeah, relevant comment  -- I do think Karen was more enamored of the potential than the reality.

Okay, the idea of Jan and Michael's mother together on a girls night out?  Comedy gold, Jerry!  I wouldn't mind reading more details about that! (I keep asking for stuff and it keeps working, so what the hell?)  Until then, this is my favorite line because it's just so real and so Pam:

“Nothing, just…who has days like this?”

I absolutely think she's said this at least once.  This is very sweet and very them.  Love.

Author's Response: Thank you, thank you! Yes, I have to say I amused myself at the idea of a Jan/Mrs. Scott night of carousing. Like Pam, however, I couldn't even begin to imagine what it might entail. I'm glad you thought that line was "so Pam"- it actually got added in the re-write, because I wanted her reaction to the whole situation to be a little more realistic. Thank you again!

What a perfectly lovely and poignant 8 words that pretty much sum it all up, xoxoxo.  Loved the debate team exchange and that Pam got a little testy with him, too.  This all feels very natural and flows like a real conversation between them would.  YAY for you and everyone else for unblockage!  This was great.

Author's Response: Always my intention to make them sound as true to the show as possible.  Sometimes I'm not sure if it's me or Pam talking - but I think I'm able to channel her when it counts.   So glad you enjoyed it!!

It made me feel so good to read this line:

Not in the "If you just could have…" or "It's your fault that we…" type of way.  There's a silent acknowledgement of things past, admittance of mistakes made, and an agreement to simply move forward instead of clinging to what used to be.

And it made so warm and happy to read this:Foggy headed he can hear the shower running and smell coffee brewing in the kitchen.   He sees her skirt and sweater tossed on the edge of the bed and smiles.  She's all bright colors and bows these days

I could really quote the whole thing back to you, xoxoxo.  It's just so lovely and quiet and simple and just how I imagine it would be!  I love the idea that they feel their relationship is so fragile and delicate and they're being so careful with it, but then realizing they don't need to worry about that.

Don't ever, ever apologize for giving us another story and keep writing!

Author's Response:

Aw Sweetpea.  You certainly have earned the sweet part of your name with that review.  I'm so glad so much of ths story touched you.

Colette, this is so heartbreakingly real and sad. I think it would have been just like this between them, with Karen trying everything under the sun and Jim trying so hard to love her.

Moments like this:

Still, he wishes he didn’t know it wasn’t an inspiration she’d had in the moment.

and lines like these:

Where there’s impulse – messy and imperfect - instead of technique. He thinks of bodies colliding how they will and skin kissed or licked or stroked simply because resistance is futile.

are why your stories are so great, and why they always leave me with a sense of longing to have a great love in my life again.  Even with an angsty Jim/Karen story, that promise of true love is still there.  Wonderful.

Author's Response: That may be the best review ever. I think that's the thing about the whole Jim/Pam saga, maybe why it's so much more compelling than most tv love stories - for all its subtlety and humor and ordinariness, that glimmer of true love is there. So, if you think these fics capture that even a little bit, I'm really flattered. And glad you thought the Karen/Jim dynamic was represented here too. Thanks so much, Sweetpea.

How did I miss this the first couple times around?

Sometimes if there’s no new game on, he watches an old one on ESPN Classics. It’s a little crazy - despite already knowing the outcome, he actually finds himself hoping his team will win. Even when he knows how badly they’ve already lost.

And THAT is how a metaphor is done. You know, your stuff is just like an episode of the show - wonderfully enjoyable after the first viewing, but even more satisfying on repeat.  So glad to see this with a ribbon!

Author's Response:

Aw, thanks, you! Often, it’s those little phrases or metaphors or images or whatnots, that I include in a story without much fanfare or fancy language, that are actually the most important to me – so I love when someone picks one up. Means more than you know! I'm also always so touched and pleased to get a comment on a story that’s not brand new anymore – really great to know something you worked hard on has a longer shelf life, lol. Much appreciated, Sweetpea!

Okay, TLK, you should write talking heads endlessly, because these are hysterical!  I love the TH exchange between Jim and Kevin!  You write Michael's awkward moments so well - those times when he's gone too far down a line of reasoning that turns on him.  So funny.

Author's Response:

Talking Heads are fun to write, too! ;)  I do like the thought that Kevin has some sort of specialty, but Michael won't pay any attention.  Michael's awkwardness is always fun to write as well.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, Sweetpea

Thank you very much for keeping me awake since 3:30 am!  I was just going to be up for a few minutes and then try to fall back to sleep, but...new chapter.  And such a good one, too.

I really like the choice you made about not having Jim confront Roy, but Pam instead.  As much as I would've liked to see a Jim-Roy smackdown at some point, this wasn't the right time or the right issue.  Loved Jim feeling covered by the dirt that Roy was throwing around.  But him saying "I would never do what he's doing to you" and her nod of acknowledgement...wow.  Right in the griefbone!  Yes, I did want to yell at her, but I want to give her a hug, too.  Looks like the ball's in her court now - she's going to have to do something.  I can't wait to see what that is!  Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing her eventually get her tongue down Jim's throat again...:-)

You can rip my heart out and stomp on it all you want, Stablergirl.  So achingly, beautifully written.  I'd be absolutely green with envy if it weren't so much more satisfying to read your words than to try to write them.

Author's Response: Wow, Sweetpea, I'm not gonna lie...your words pack quite the punch, as well.  What a fantastic review for me to wake up to this morning.  Thank you so much.

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed

I don't care where it's going or if it even ends happily - please, just keep going.  I can't quote a single line without quoting them all, but the idea of Jim abandoning his own imaginings of how this might happen to give in to whatever she needs and letting her break his heart is just so epically tragic and true for Jim.  Yes, poor Jim, because this 'yes' is even more heartbreaking than the 'yes' he gave to Karen.  But poor Pam!  I don't think there is a sadder question than the one she asks him.  Please, do continue.

Author's Response: Oh thank the good lord that you're with me on this chapter! I was nervous about how it would be recieved and I'm so glad that you left a review clearly stating that you 'get' what I was doing here.  Thanks, Sweetpea! You rock ;-)

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed
Date: February 18, 2008 Title: Chapter 4: Don't move.

What do you mean?  It's perfect and it's beautiful.  Here, look at these two passages:

Sometimes late at night he would swear to the ceiling in his bedroom that if she had a battle that needed to be fought he would fight it for her.

I love reading little bits of private, yearning, dreaming Jim.  This really drove home how hard it must have been for him to shake that off every morning when he'd go into work.

Not everything was black and white, or black and blue, because some prisons were built and locked by the prisoner and not the guard, and some wounds were invisible.

So gorgeously profound.  So true for Pam, but true for Jim, too.

You've written some wonderful stories, but this one is something else entirely.  Please stop worrying and just keep going!

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed
Date: February 23, 2008 Title: Chapter 5: Don't worry.

Wow!  So, I read the first version of this chapter and wanted to let it settle in a bit before leaving a review and then I fell asleep on the couch.  I woke up and came back to it to find...a whole new chapter?!  Not just a reworked paragraph or two, but a whole new chapter.  Now I'm jealous, because I wasn't asleep that long and this is what you can do in the time it takes me to nap on the couch?  That's just nuts.

With some stories, I find myself skimming over narrative and inner monologue stuff to get to dialogue, but never with this, because then I'd miss stuff like:

She wanted badly to know that the ocean was in front of her and all it would take to be on the other side of the world was a well-tied knot of blind determination.

In fact, the whole pond-ocean metaphor was just beautiful and I loved this:

Pam wanted to snap her fingers and see if it would rain.

She already knew she could make it storm.

I love how Jim feels comfortable to her, "like white t-shirts and jeans and 1950."  Man, that is so...right.  I definitely like this new chapter better - the old one was just fine - but this feels more like the rest of the story and I love that Jim tells her to just watch the game even though he's probably dying to know what she's thinking.

You deserve every word of every review and if this one helps drag more words like these out of you, I'll be thrilled!

FNB!  Okay, so she hit a little speed bump, but she is not going to be denied!  Unbelievable.  I'm pretty much wiped out here, but I recover quickly, so, you know, if you wanted to get the next chapter up today, that would be fine.

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed
Date: March 05, 2008 Title: Chapter 8: Don't break.

My goodness, that was fine.  Every single emotional note just pitch perfect.  I stealth-read this at work and got so choked up, I knew there was no way I could leave a review, but I looked forward to coming home and reading it again.

This put a gigantic lump in my throat and turned the water works on:

“Like I wanted you to be on my team, almost, but I couldn’t tell you because it was just so bad and you were so…” she huffed and she flinched and she looked down at her feet, “just so good,” she breathed.

Did you hear that whimper from there?

Pam asking him if she was beautiful again just killed me and the line about them volleying their insecurities - so tender and vulnerable and sweet.

Then this just finished me off completely:

“I believe you,” he whispered between kisses, “I believe you.”

Oh Jim!  He IS so good!

I'm so glad I waited one more day before emailing you, begging for another chapter!  When you say "not that much" what I'm thinking is "plain and simple" in the best possible way writing can be, which means it IS a lot.  Thank you so much for this and I just can't be that patient anymore, SG!

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed
Date: March 09, 2008 Title: Chapter 9: Don't forget where you've been.

Listen here, SG!  I am SO with EverybodyHurts on this thing but even moreso because after the initial steam, I let you rip my guts out and make me cry.  Chapter after chapter, with the bawling.  Hand over the steam, sister, or somebody's going to hurt!

This was absolutely perfect.  Roy and Pam leaving each other in this quiet, resigned way is just right.  It was perfect that he really didn't get it and that Pam felt sorry for him because of it.

Her mom, though.  Man, that's the part that got me, her saying she was proud of her and how Pam hadn't really thought of everything like that.  While the screaming might have been satisfying for the moment, that ugly memory would have stole some of her dignity, which is completely intact now.

I love that she needs "at least a day" to cleanse her palate and be ready for Jim!  I mean, it takes time to shave your legs and stuff, right?  Hell, she's been ready for him for a long time now.  Let the steam begin!

I am SO over you!  (not really!)

Oh, sweet, aching, delicious anticipation!  Pam certainly has grown a pair, hasn't she?  I really love this turn of events - love seeing her feeling confident and beautiful enough to dangle it in front of Jim's nose just a little.  She better be careful - that's some powerful mojo she's messing with there!  Simply can't wait for more, so I hope you don't mind putting everything else in your life on hold to finish this.

I swear I didn't take a breath the whole time I was reading this!  Good grief, that was hotter than the hinges on the gates of Hell.  I need a cigarette and everybody kept their clothes on!  I may have a stroke when they get to the cabin!

I love that Jim tells her "come with me" instead of asking.  I love that the only button he doesn't push is the elevator button.

Whew!  I didn't see your original chapter (I must have looked away for a minute - considering you whip out entire chapters in the time it takes me to nap on the couch) but I can't imagine anything hotter than this.  HOT.  And so full of their desire for each other.

I have two Pam-quotes for you:

"Right, I need a boyfriend!"

"I hate you!"

Reviewer: Sweetpea Signed

You are a goddess.  I love that Pam has just a moment of fear at her own vulnerability because she's so invested in him but then she knows that he's never going to hurt her.  Oh, that trust and that certainty is just the most wonderful thing in the world and it has such a rightful place in this story and for these two.

This has been such a beautiful and beautifully crafted love story.  Thank you so much for sharing it.

brokenloon, I loved both chapters, but this one especially.  Pam reaching her limit with Roy because of an eyeroll feels so true and real.  I had something very similar happen in my own life - no need to go into that here!  Just one little thing that gives her a moment of clarity and strength - I really liked that.  You really nailed her emotions upon finding herself alone just perfectly.  Waiting to feel the sadness but instead feeling the rush of everything opening up and the possibilities that are hers to explore - just perfect.  Looking forward to chapter 3!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for this review, Sweetpea.  I really wanted to depict a quick but realisitic breakup and to believably suggest the feelings Pam might have.  To hear that both of those elements worked for you is gratifying.  I'm looking forward to Ch 3 too, I just wish it would write itself.

Awww, kells, this is lovely!  You know, I really bought Pam's claim that she was totally fine in the ending we saw, but after reading this, I completely agree with your take on it.  She would have held it together as long as she could (and that was a long day for her!) but I do think she would have had a good cry thinking Jim was really gone.  And the hug!  So sweet!

Author's Response: Thanks for reading and reviewing, Sweetpea!  I do think that Pam had come a long way and she knew that she would be okay without Jim, but deep down she would be heartbroken if she lost him all over again, so to speak. I think she would have always had some regret in her mind about the way things happened between them, and I tried to convey that here.  I'm glad I can make you see it my way, too. lol.  Thanks again :) - K
