After being raised by feral dogs deep in the heart of Appalachia for my first 17 years, I rescued a group of imperiled socioanthopologists from certain doom at the hands of some moonshiners in an undisclosed mossy holler of my homeland. Silly with gratitude, they taught me to read and eventually, to make letters with a pencil. I'm continuing that learning process by writing fan fiction here.
As you can see, I'm still having trouble with run-on sentences and cliches. Yet I've come so far.

Oh, and I love music - especially jazz.

What if Jim hadn't been able to get the card back during the Season 2 Christmas Party? What if someone reads that card? What if that person isn't Pam?

Some S2 angst and drama.

This was wonderful, and very very believeable as the way that it went down that night. I laughed at the idea that they'd decided not to tell Michael where they lived, and I really loved this line, because it's so true:

Yeah. You heard me. I swear. The guy is clueless in ways Michael never was."

Great job.

Author's Response:

Thank you!  I was hoping it would ring true and I'm so happy you thought so.  I gotta admit - the first 4 lines were added on after I uploaded.  I was trying to think how Pam got home and realized there was no way Michael wouldn't have weaseled his way in.  Anyway - thank you so much for the review.  I really appreciate it!

This was wonderful. I loved that you worked in the whole divorce/Pratt unsettled issues as catalysts for Pam's work departure, and Jim's keen observations of how things were going.
This line was especially good:
He didn't get the weird silences and the manipulation, but, suddenly, Roy, all nine years of him, made more sense than Jim ever wanted. He carried boxes, let her talk, and kept his astonishment to himself.
The last two lines were nothing short of perfect.

Summary:

This only contains spoilers if you don't know that Jim and Pam are engaged and if you haven't scoped out that adorable engagement photo. That picture has done nothing but plague me since I first laid eyes on it!  So here's what it has inspired...

FOR ALL THOSE LOOKING FOR THIS PHOTO, SEE PAGE 9 of the JAM thread. I think the lovely Elle was the first to post it. Then Jazzfan discovered that it was taken sitting in a chair inside Jim and Pam's garage. :-)

I just read all of this in one sitting. You've done a wonderful job making me feel Jim's devastation in this unthinkable scenario. I thought the scene with Jim's brothers was especially well done and it felt very real. Mixing in the memories is effective because when something like this happens, well, that's what your mind does. But enough with the rational analysis - truth is, I'm a mess, dammit. My eyes will be red all day.

I'm glad you're still writing on this one. You have to keep going until Jim can dig himself out and into a decent life for himself and Amanda. Again, I like the "flashbacks" because that's what Jim would be thinking about and it makes it all the more poignant. Very well done.

I missed the last chapter, I've been out of town. Though it deals with the unthinkable, I am really enjoying this story because it is well written, especially in the sense that it's not overdramatic rendition of how Jim would cope, but a grittier more real look at how he would deal with this situation.
Please keep going, I'm looking forward to Jim gradually healing as much as possible, and I love his interactions with their daughter. She's his saving grace.

Oh man, that was really really good. Seriously. Wonderful job. Too many good passages to mention, but this exchange actually made me tear up - it's expressed so cleverly and beautifully, because you know it took Jim long while to finally get truly secure and not be afraid Pam would "disappear" again:

“Not true. This is just lovely, Beesly,” he remarked. “Very flattering.” His voice was teasing, but there was something soft and open in his eyes that made her stomach flutter. She held his gaze for a moment too long, until that increasingly familiar panic she couldn’t fully explain made her tear her eyes away and reach for the ‘delete’ button with a grin.

He pulled the camera away and easily held it up out of her reach, shaking his head as he clucked his tongue in reprimand. “No way. You have to send this to me.”

“I’ll think about it,” she said tartly. “May I have my camera back please?”

Jim’s smile faded. “Promise,” he insisted quietly.

His expression, so unexpectedly serious and almost sad, made her heart jump into her throat and her mouth go dry. She nodded, frowning up at him, anxious to erase the melancholy from his eyes. “I will,” she promised.

“All right then.” He smiled, handing the camera back to her, and suddenly he was Jim again and she could breathe.

Gold.

Author's Response: Thanks jazzfan! I liked that scene myself, so nice to see how it resonated. I just love season 2 angst (knowing that it all ends up in a happy ending, that is). This hit me in the grief bone and I'm going to pick out the same paragraph as Ms. Hoo, because it is that good:

I know you, Pam…I know that the smile you’re wearing will last you the day. But please don’t forget that I gave you that smile. I own it. Don’t share it with him. Don’t do that to me…please.

At that point, Jim had to be content with such little things. This made me ache for S2 Jim all over again, and I'm glad to know how it all turned out.

Nicely done. I'm no Karen fan, but you made me feel sympathy for her and really highlighted the impossible situation she was in. I always thought that Jim's simple "Yes" in that episode was, in many ways, the one most important pivotal scene of the season.

Author's Response: Exactly the point of the story! Thanks, I\'m so glad you liked it! And I agree -Jim\'s \"yes\" (not yeah or mhm, but YES) was one of the top three...I\'d list them as being \"yes,\" \"I\'m really glad I\'m with Karen,\" and \"There were a lot of reasons to call of my wedding, but the truth is that I didn\'t care about any of those reasons until I met you.\" They just all capture those feelings so perfectly. Of course, I LOVED the ask-out, but those three mean more, I think.

Wonderful job, can't wait until the next chapter. Love the bare feet and this nearly killed me:

When her fingers went to the buttons on his shirt, he traced her collarbone with his finger. He ran his finger slowly across the bone, until it met the edge of her shirt and the strap on her bra, pushing them both aside to make room for his lips.

Author's Response: I refuse to believe that after awkwardness and a little clumsiness, Jim is anything but relatively smooth when it comes to these arts. I just can\'t think he\'s anything else, even if he\'s goofy and funny here and there. Thanks for the review. =)

Argh. I didn't think you'd go there and then you did. Somebody had to write it - I'm glad it's you. Poor Jim and Pam. Regarding your questions: Pam seemed a bit bratty until the end and you realize something actually is wrong, so you see it is justified. The only criticism I would have is that Jim seemed a bit too wordy. My version of Jimpert would say a little less, even if he was very upset. And this declaration seemed a bit strong for Jim to say to Pam: This," he said uneasily, shaking, "This... I bought this today. Before you were even awake. Just... It wasn't for today, it wasn't for -- God, Pam, I'm going to give this to you one day and I've never felt like this about anyone. I went out and got this for you; doesn't that mean anything to you? Doesn't that tell you something about how I feel? What this is for me?"

But that is nitpicking. I'm very intrigued to see how this is going to play out. I want to give them both a hug.

Author's Response: Thank you for the nitpicking! =) Wordy Jim is so hard to justify. I mostly try to write him as a man of few words, especially in somewhat angsty situations -- I like to think back to Beach Games and remember that this was the guy that said, "I wanted to be .. not here." That line usually keeps me in check. But I see where you're coming from. This is the last thing he really said to her, so he was at his breaking point a little, and he's pretty frustrated -- but I think after this, it becomes a 180, and he'll shut off. That's going to be the next chapter. Thanks for the review! I hope I can pull this off, all of you guys being so nice are making me pretty nervous, haha.

Oh wow, I didn't see that coming. /Pam I'm very curious to see how they'll react to this, this early in the relationship. Oh, and this was especially lovely:
She shrugged, tightening her grip on him. "You're going to be so good to me, aren't you?"

He scrunched his face up a bit, staring at her in wonder until she was smiling back at him.

"I don't know what I did to deserve you --"
