Author of the Month March 2020

I've been writing fanfiction for awhile now. Just recently discovered The Office and figured I'd try my hand at that as well.

At first I thought of having all my stories in the same universe, but then I had some AU ideas. So any stories that occur within a common universe will be in a given series.

Yes steps being made so that's nice to see. Somehow I get the feeling that Pam is going to be the one to kiss him first this time around. It might be a quick unsteady peck on the lips that leaves Jim slightly gobsmacked or she could just dive right in an snog him, or something in between. I do think that whenever they get to that kind of point, there will be no stopping them or tearing them apart. The way you've got things setting up makes it so easy to envision how things would go so that's fun.

I have only one critique of this chapter. We seem to go backwards in time. Last chapter it was September and now it's August again. Just something that stuck out.

Other than that, absolutely lovely. Jim bringing a chick flick is a great move by him. Though he could have probably brought any movie and I doubt they would have watched much of it, keyed up as they were. Yeah, just a good fun chapter here. Can't wait to see where they go from here on out.

Author's Response:

Oh shoot thank you for that catch! I fixed the date!

Thanks!

Much more mature version of Pam here. Yes relationships take work, but the good ones are the relationships where you want to put in the work. When you do that the rest comes naturally. As this is seeming to do. Lovely update.

Author's Response: Love your thoughts here. Thank you for reading!

Very cute. Pam pausing to run to Jim's room to ask that was adorable. They're just lovely together. Jim being the first one to say he loves her seems fitting. As does her mild freak out. It's a much nicer freakout this time around don't get me wrong.

Some things happened? Ok, I'll just use my imagination on that one, but I think it's at least safe to say they're doing a bit more than just making out now. Nice images there. Still loving how much fun college age Pam is having with Jim back in her life.

Author's Response: This Pam is much better than the Pam with Roy.

Very cute. Nice to see them just enjoying spending time with each other. I kinda liked that Jim was able to catch a peek of the diary. Perfect comeback for him. Keep doing everything you're doing Jim.

I also like that Pam wants to make sure they're both on the same page about things. Keep communicating like that. Can't wait to hear what happens after this dorm dance.

Author's Response: I love forcing them to actually communicate with one another. So different from a lot canon where they seem to forget to communicate the important things.

Are you trying to give us all diabetes with how sweet this chapter is? Cause if so you've absolutely succeeded. The build up to everything, just a seemingly normal day of getting coffee and tea, just sitting on a bench, and then the big moment. I'm sure Jim was sweating bullets. Especially giving her that necklace and poem. Seems just the sort of cheesy overly romantic cliche thing Jim would do and that Pam would love. I loved it I'll tell you that much.

Just wonderful.

Author's Response: Mission accomplished! It definitely is a total Jim move!

So here I am reading along, enjoying the fluff, pictureing how the weekend portion of Thanksgiving weekend went, grinning at Pam's musings. Then that last paragraph. Bravo. Just Bravo. Perfect way to change this up a bit and get something new in there.

I loved Jim's reaction to everything and what he added. I have this picture in my head of them studying together, Pam flipping to the end to write again and seeing that. At first she's shocked, then a little annoyed, which quickly melts to happy tears, after which she jumps Jim. Just lovely.

Author's Response: That's how I imagined it as well! Thanks for reading and reviewing!

Always fun to have an update with this story. Loved the images of their NYE trip. Reminds me of a trip my wife and I took back before we were engaged to Chicago. More than that, I really like that Pam has taken some time to look back and see how far she's come in her life. From what she thought was great in high school to what is truly great now.

This is just all sorts of adorably sweet. I love that Pam can just go off on a walk and enjoy herself like this. She can find things to do for herself rather than ALWAYS having to be with Jim. Of course Jim stopping by made it very sweet too. And that they can just sit and enjoy coffee and read together is a lovely image.

Wonderful to see an update here. Really like that Pam can still turn into a pile of giddy goo when Jim mentions something more permanent in their relationship. I like that they're incorporating things from both of their lives. Watching basketball but taking her out. Nice to see they've developed balance. The spring break memories were a lot of fun.

Pam's black period. Maybe we'll just put it down to March and it's raining out a lot.

WELCOME BACK!!! You and this story have been missed.

Ok so getting into this. Wow! That's big. I mean like huge! I get why she would be worried about everything. I really feel her for wondering what her parents will have to say. I've got a feeling Jim will be surprised for sure, but it won't have any bearing on how he feels for her. Again, really glad to get an update on this one.

Yeah, a little thrown for a loop there at the end. Thanks for the heads up with your end note that it is who we think it is. Never seen this movie so I'm going into this one fresh.

So far looks interesting. Good descriptions throughout and fun to see Jim with a guitar. You've got me all sorts of curious as to what's all going on with them. Looking forward to more.

It was definitely different that's for sure. I really wasn't expecting the whole supernatural element at all. Still you did a great job setting up the emotional content of everything prior to Pam's stint in the hospital. Nice to see a Jim-saves-the-day story. Even with that, I think it was appropriate to see that Jim is also carrying those images with him. Stuff like that does tend to stick with a person.

Nice to see them together afterwards and that they're there to fend off any further demons.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your review! I appreciate it very much.

The whole story was my indulgence to 'Jim in shining armor' idea, I guess. It might be weird, but I just couldn't help.

Ok, yeah just like everyone else I'm hooked into this one too. Great way to get into this world. Already we've got questions about the who's, what's, why's, and everything. It very much feels just as tense as any survival/post-apocalypse type show or movie one would see. Great detail in both world building as well as internal thoughts.

Great job with this first chapter. Really looking forward to seeing how it all pans out.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! This genre has always interested me. I like to see how people respond when civilization is stripped bare and people's true nature comes out. Thanks for reading!

The great world building continues. I was about to say something about how with this new potential threat from town how Jim's group at the farm should start thinking about defenses. You beat me to it. I would not be at all surprised in that armory that Dwight left them that there would be some books or instructions on how to make booby traps or other defenses.

Speaking of Dwight. I bit heartbreaking to get more glimpses of what happened to him. Not only that but the effects it left on everyone else. Still doing a great job with this.

Author's Response: That's so interesting! I have some other ways that are mentioned later that his foresight helps them but I never thought of booby traps. That is so very Dwight! I really wanted there to be a significant catalyst for a change in Jim, to push him into revealing the parts of him that I feel are lying underneath and so I used Dwight's death to do that. I've always found the ripple effect on other characters when someone dies very interesting. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Got me a little worried with the first part of this chapter. I could feel the hunger they were all going through as they huddled in that cabin. Then when those creeps showed up. Good on Jim and Brian to send them packing. Well done Jim, being the sheepdog as you put it earlier.

Nice to have a break of almost normal with the swap meet. I get the feeling this is one of those, enjoy the good times when you can cause they don't happen much anymore kind of times for our heroes. Especially with the rumor of that larger gang.

Looks like Jim is also familiar with a concept called the Grey Man. What that means is that the Grey Man survives by not drawing attention to themselves. They are the ones in the background you dismiss in an instant. Could serve him and everyone at the farm well.

That last scene with Jim and Pam though. Very nice to imagine all that. Even through it all, their connection still remains just as strong as we see anywhere else. Maybe even stronger.

Author's Response: The good times never seem to last long! I realize I was likely heavy-handed with the foreshadowing but I definitely want to draw attention to the fact that their gut instincts were right. Grey Man is very interesting and is indeed how many of these people have lasted so long and without having to fight off anyone. Thank you for your always enjoyable thoughts!

The plot thickens. I get the feeling that sometime soon Jim is going to have much more of a leadership mantle placed on his shoulders. I kinda looked like the people at the swap meet were already looking up to him. He's in charge of probably the best equipped farm in the area and he's already done things to fortify it. Now a lot of the prep for that was thanks to Dwight.

*take off hat and pauses in a moment of silence for Dwight in this story*

But still, Jim and everyone at the farm have a lot going for them.

That also makes them a huge target. I know that they all know that. The thing is this Mac character seems to be not only ruthless but smart about it. Which makes him a dangerous enemy.

Batten down the hatches Jim. Feels like you're going to need every advantage you can get.

Author's Response: I have always liked the idea of the reluctant leader. The person doesn't seek out that role but people thrust it upon them because they believe they are capable. I think Jim has that in him even though he doesn't really want it (even in the past, he didn't.) I want to draw the distinct contrast between the farm and the outside world. What they have to do to defend that way of life is important and ultimately hopeful, I think.

Lots of intense emotions this time around. I love the fact that it's Pam that Jim turns to here. That he needs her just as much as she needs him. I love that despite everything going on in this world, they're still there for each other. I 100% get the kinds of emotions Jim is feeling here. Traumatic experiences are rough. Seeking comfort and solace with those you love is natural and it's great to see that Pam is there for him.

Jim as the reluctant leader is coming along nicely too. It seems that you're grounding him first and foremost in thoughts of protecting his family. I like that approach. That his protective instincts then grow out to others seems very natural.

Great chapter.

Author's Response: Thank you so much Warrior! Congrats on AotM too!

Got me going there for a moment. I'm actually kinda surprised Mac let them go. I wonder what's going on with him. Like I said earlier, he seems to be a smart villain rather than just some thug. Which of course makes him that much more of a threat.

You portrayed Jim's fear, anger, and rage really well here. I'd probably do much the same if someone threatened my wife or children like that. Very real emotions.

So clearly yes there are still people following this story. Glad to see you still updating it.

Author's Response: Thank you! This was tricky to write so I appreciate hearing it came across well. There is definitely more to Mac.

Good way to ease off after all the tension of the last chapter. Nice that they had the time to decompress a bit. Not that they're under any less strain, but this chapter feels like a chance to catch their breath.

Speaking as a medical professional, I don't see much wrong with any of the medical stuff here. Yes Pam passed out, but other than that I didn't see any symptoms of a concussion. Those would be, among other things, confusion, asking the same question over and over, and nausea and vomiting. However Jim's also not a medical guy so it stands to reason he might think that's what happened. Same goes for all the rest. Bumps, scrapes, a few cuts, but nothing a decent first aid kit can't handle.

I also like how Jim and Pam can communicate here. Both verbally and non-verbally. The scars from pain in the past may still be there, but those old hurts seem to have healed. Especially in light of their current situation.

Great writing as always.

Author's Response: Nice! Thank you for that information! I was hoping it made some sort of sense so I'm glad it works. :)

Yes a breather, but at the same time with Toby reappearing like that especially with this new attitude of his, it's yet another reason to worry. I can easily see how this new world would make anyone's views change. Nice update.

Author's Response: I do not treat poor Toby kindly, I'm afraid. Thanks warrior!

Reviewer: warrior4 Signed

Lots of tense moments with this one. I was expecting things to go south at any point. The fact that this time things didn't still leaves an ominous feeling to this story. Which is I'm sure the point.

That being said I'm glad they were able to get in and out unscathed. Toby is still a worry. Especially with his attitude to Pam.

Glad they were able to rescue not only the kids, but Isabel as well. Jim and Pam have always been kind souls and I'm glad that hasn't changed to much in this world.

Author's Response:

Thanks Warrior! Yes, Tent City is a way to have glimpse at how bad things are elsewhere. We don't get to see the true scope of the devastation because we are limited to what the characters know of course, but this is a way to expand the landscape a bit. At least that was my hope! I really wanted Jim and Pam, particularly Pam, to wrestle a bit with the goodness of her nature verses surviving, especially since now her basic needs are met. It's an easy question to answer when your are barely making it, but now they are quite well off. She will continue to, as you will see, but I wanted them to have a 'win' this time. :) Thank you so much for your reviews on every chapter!

Holy crap that was a chapter. Huge range of emotions. Toby is so far gone. I'm angry, disgusted, and feel slightly sorry for him. Considering the beatings his life took Before, I kinda get why he'd get this hard and cruel. But still to abandon even his daughter? Wow, this new world really does hit home hard.

And to end the chapter like that? Hoo boy, kinda glad you didn't leave us on to big a cliffhanger. Still I'm feeling very nerouvs to start in on that next chapter you've written.

Amazing writing.

Author's Response: Thank you Warrior! Yeah, I feel for Toby a bit too. Life has done him no favors, that's for sure. In my mind, he left Sasha for her own good. Where he thinks he is going, he can't take her. At least that's how I feel his character is rationalizing it.
