This is just....wow.  I can't imagine how you do this - where it comes from.  Amazing.

I love how we're getting to see this friendship develop, and getting Jim's story.  In bits and pieces through the eyes of the people that know them now, and little bits from themselves.  I love that there is so much we don't know, too.

I love that PAM scares JIM in this world.  I love that she is the one pushing him and pulling him back into the world again, so to speak.

I don't think I can do enough justice in a review, for crying out loud.  I've already read this a few times and each time I pick up on something else - some little nuance that someone says, or something in the footnotes (which. I. Love.)

I just love this.  Every word.

Author's Response:

Whew!  Thank you so, so much for this, kells!   No beta today and this was a big chapter, so I just went with it.  Then I couldn't get the darn thing to post right and it's still not formatted the way I wanted it to be, but at least it's readable.

Anyway, enough whining.  I love thinking of them in this world and I'm so pleased you like the little bit of role reversal with Pam and Jim.  That's something Lovefool and I talked about right in the beginning.  I love thinking of Pam here - she's a free spirit, a little revolutionary in rural Vermont!

This format was tough to do, no lie.  But I thought it was such a good way to reveal this world, so I'm glad you liked that, too.  I'm so ready to go back to plain ole narrative after this.  The footnotes are way too much fun - I swear, it's like I can turn into a different person or something once I get below that line.

Thank you for such thoughtful feedback.  I really appreciate it!  :-*

Once again, I'm nearly at a loss as to what to write for a review.  This was beautiful.  His talking about how he grieved was just heartbreaking, but hopeful.

I have read, to my embarrassment, the chapter with her sitting on his lap with her filthy mouth and them talking about the dog more times than I can count.  "I let my dog judge me". I love it.

I can't even consider this 'fanfiction', Sweetpea.  That doesn't do this justice.  Not that fanfiction isn't writing in it's own right, but this is so much more.  This is art.  It's beautiful and perfect and amazing.  Thank you for this story.

Author's Response:

Oh, kells!  You make my heart soar with the eagle's nest!  What an incredible review.

This was a tough chapter and I had a mini meltdown over IM with Lovefool.  [Note:  I did not go out on a ledge of any kind!]  I was freaking out over how much this chapter had to do.  It had to show Jim coming out of grieving - but not too fast and not too easily or I betray everything I did in the first chapters.  It had to show a bit of Jim and Pam's new relationship - but not too much to turn it into a sappy or typical fanfic moment, either.  (I kept telling Lovefool: THERE WILL BE NO VIOLINS!)  Those things had to be done while transitioning from second to first person.  I love the term "unreliable narrator" and to me it just fit Jim in this story so perfectly.  I read a bit in the forward of the book Soul Mountain about the use of the second person after I wrote the first three chapters that just knocked me out.  In that story, the "you" is a fractured part of the authorial self that the protagonist creates because he is on an intensely lonely journey and needed company.  Man, I loved that, and realized that that also fit this story.  I saw the "you" as the reader, also, so we get to see that Jim is writing to help him through his grief and basically talking to the reader. Whew!  Anyway, it was a challenge and it was fun!

I really hope you enjoy the epilogue, aaaand, that's what I'll be working on this weekend!  Thank you so much for such wonderful comments.  :-*

Author's Response: When I watched the episode all I could think of was that there's no way he'd leave her there afterwards.   I started with Pam waiting in the car and the rest was history.  And Jim TOTALLY would ask her dad first -even if it was in the car on the way to the rest stop.  So very glad you liked it. :)

How easy it became to find himself, cheeks tinted with a light five o'clock shadow but eyes bright, back at her door.

I do truly think that once they had that date, Jim would have realized the weight off his shoulders, and almost instantly would have started to become more like his old self.

Oh, and of course - this was pretty hot, too ;)   And like others have mentioned - I could never get tired of post The Job stories.  They make me happy! Great job.

Oh Colette.  I needed this.

First, I have to apologize - I've been remiss in reviewing this lovely story...truth be told I've been sneaking small reads at work, and I don't login to the fanfic board at work so I can't review.

This is....perfect?  Just what I needed?  I've been sort of meh about Office fic lately, but this is just what the doctor ordered.

I mean, you've managed to capture each phase, so to speak, of Jim/Pam angst and bittersweetness just perfectly.  The way Pam dismisses her feelings about him, the way she avoids thinking about him in THAT way...classic S2 and you capture it well.  Makes me want to bust out my DVD's.

And of course, S3.  My poor heart took a beating that season, but it's nice to remember where we came from, and appreciate where we are now.  I love that you expanded on Women's Appreciation and just filled in a perfect gap, and my gosh that would totally be Karen's reaction.  To her credit, she did love Jim, but she loved a Jim that wasn't really the guy he once had been, and she wouldn't appreciate the things about him that are the essence of who he truly is.  Way to hit that nail on the head.  And of course poor Pam, you made me feel for her all over again.

So well done, once again.  You truly are an awesome writer, and I can't tell you how incredibly happy I was to see new fic from you.  Looking forward to more :)

Author's Response: Hey, kells! First, you absolutely do not need to apologize! Really pleased that this captures the seasons/characters for you, especially that it filled that tiny - but I think critical - gap. And I know what you mean about feeling meh about fic these days (hence my multi-month break from writing any.) But, thank you so much - feedback like this makes it feel really good be back ;-)
