JACK!! Imagine my surprise to see a flood of your stories here all of a sudden?!? Wert and I have been telling everyone to go and read your stuff for weeks now, so it's a thrill to see you finally make it over here.

As for this story, what can I say? I read it approximately one week after I wrote my very first Office story, and I thought to myself "Wow...here's a guy who is either a certified genius or an authentic whacko!" (Yes, I think to myself in Ghostbusters quotes...what of it?)

As it turns out, you're probably a pretty even split between the two, or at least 60/40.

I kid. This story will always hold a special place in my heart, as it's the original source for so many fantastic things: Jim "Jimming," the inclusion of talking heads (both of which I stole blatantly from you), and Dwight as post-apocaylptic warlord. Which, really is the only logical step for a mid-level salesman in an eastern Pennsylvania paper company.

So may I just say again how thrilled I am to see you around these parts? Make yourself at home.

Author's Response: Wow, praise from Caesar. Thanks, Mose... it was actually you and Wert that finally convinced me to archive my stuff here, so the blame falls squarely on you. \r\n\r\nActually, there\'s a lot of truth to that...I originally wrote this one out of sheer boredom and posted it on a whim, it was only the great response I got that drove me to keep writing Office stories, so you really do have a large chunk of resposibility in creating the monster that is HalloweenJack138... and yet, somehow, you can still sleep at night. \r\n\r\nAs for the fine art of \"jimming,\" I can\'t thank you enough for spreading that around as much as you have. If that word every really enters into every day speech, I can leave the stage a champion. As for Warlord Dwight... who better?\r\n\r\nThanks once again, Mose... thanks for letting me crash here for a while, I\'ll try not raid the fridge too much.

Even though it's never mentioned, you realize that everyone will assume that Jim's wife in this story is Pam? I'm just sayin...

That's neither here nor there, because truly a eulogy that beings with a line from "Jabberwocky" demands one's full attention. Brilliance personified.

Author's Response: Yeah, I actually went out of my way to not write Jim\'s wife as Karen or Pam... she was originally in the scene to give him a cup of coffee or tea, but I was afraid that everyone would see that as a clue.\r\n\r\nAnyway, thanks for writing, Mose

Why do I suspect that Mr. Mittens isn't the only one to hear Dwight say that?

This is one of my all-time favorite Jack stories, hands down. And I'm serious when I said we had to start a band named "Mangelwurzel" immediately. As in now.

Author's Response: Thanks Mose, this was definitely one of the hardest things I ever tried to write, so I can\'t tell you how much I appreciate hearing that you enjoyed it. \r\n\r\nAndd, hey, I\'m all for starting a band (we could play exclusively beet-based music), commuting for gigs and whatnot could be potentially difficult, though.

Genius comes in many forms. But I think we can all agree that this story falls under the Wile E. Cotoye-SUPER GENUIS banner, and every good thing that implies.

Author's Response: Thank you, my friend, but I prefer to think of myself as a Hubert J Farnsworth-style absent-minded professor-type... which hopefully explains my countless typographical errors. Hey, are you or Wert interested in writing a chapter of this one? I kinda feel like this story lends itself to a looser, more collaborative structure than I generally use.

Sudz!! This is so fantastic! This was like a superhero story: "Fancy New Beesly and the Swimsuit of Doom!" :) Seriously, though, I love your take on Pam's inner struggles with trying not to think about Ji--er---Voldem---uh... You-know-who, which totally was not working for her. I mean, come on...it's like Jim trying not to think about Pam! Of course he is!

I thought it was a stroke of genius to have Pam's inspiration come from Karen of all people. And I loved the thought "Why couldn't we be friends?" Only to have Pam follow that logic to it's inevitable conclusion and get mad at Jim for "ruining everything." Hilarious stuff.

I think this is a winner, and to think it's your first shot out of the gate! I hope we see more from you, 'cause this was great!

Author's Response: Mose, thanks so much for the review, and for your kind comments in the chat which inspired me to get this out of my head and onto the computer screen!

I feel the best way to summarize my joy with this story is by reciting part of an epic poem. So, with apologies to Ernest Lawrence Thayer...

"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is much joy in Scranton--for Jim and Pam will not strike out!"

Bravo!!

Author's Response: Wow! Wow! I'm ... extremely flattered. Thank you! Can't do better than "Casey at the Bat". I appreciate all your many comments, Cousin Mose. It was very kind of you.

Awww...now this chapter was all sorts of sweet and fun. Pam and Jim being all awkward...Pam sketching Jim while he dozed... Very nice stuff!

And I wish the softball games I played had lunch breaks in the middle! :)

Author's Response: Hey, my company softball games had beer breaks, so ... win! I figured for Meredith's sake they probably would have soft-pedaled the beer and focused on food. And I had to get Kevin's grill in there!

Wow, way to go Meredith! Who would have guessed? And I love Andy's tantrum with the bat, and the fact that Michael thinks that getting to first base is the same as a home run. (So...many...jokes!) Great work!

This was all kinds of fabulous! Just when you thought the "date" had been already told to death, you come along and give new life to it! So many lovely images in here, from "second chances that could be last chances," to the fact that they wind up at the camera crew's favorite hangout. Just loved it all the way around.

Oh, and when Vanilla Ice is roasting in the fires of Hades for ripping of "Under Pressure," he can play tennis with MC Hammer for ripping off "Super Freak." :)

Author's Response:

All kinds of fabulous is one of my favourite compliments, ever. Thanks! I'm so glad it felt "new", because the idea stuck with me, but I didn't want to it be same old, same old.

Maybe there is a special ring of hell, reserved for those who crappily rip off music and people who talk at the theatre? Perhaps Rhianna can be Hammer and Ice's ball girl, for putting forth the "Wanna Be Startin' Something" ripoff atrocity currently sweeping the nation.

Oh...wow! This chapter was a tour-de-force of awesomnosity! (Yeah, it'll be a word one day).

You captured all these little vignettes so wonderfully, it felt like watching an actual episode. I loved Jim and Pam's conversation about the mirrors (I won both a Def Leppard AND a Trans Am mirror when I was a kid.), and Creed in the hay caused me to snort out loud. :)

I guess my only wish would have been to see a little more of the Winnebago trip, but then, this story was about being at the fair, not on a road trip. :)

I kid, I kid...

I love so many of the things that this story chooses to be, from the different tense you write it in, to Dwight trying to prove mathematically that Andy is evil, to Pam's volume knob (brilliant, by the way), to the wonderful awkwardness of the haircut itself. I suppose if I had one criticism, it would be that I wish the story was a little longer. (Ironic, given the story's title, yes? :P)
