But he knows he can’t do that. So he does the next best thing. He looks at her. Really looks at her. And he hopes she sees.
Oh, this kills me. How many times must he have had moments like these - looking at her, such an innocent moment but mentally begging her, "Won't you look deeper? Can't you see how much I love you?" knowing that its not his place to actually say something. Oh, man. Wonderful little moment. And the last line is a doozy with all its subtext.
Author's Response: Yeah, he's a pro at those longing looks. John Krasinski is so amazingly angsty, it's easy to be inspired by his performances. I enjoyed writing the last line, because it's just so indicative of their relationship - something seemingly innocent and normal, but seething with pain and turmoil under the surface. Paper cuts are like that. I guess... Anyway... thanks for reviewing! I appreciate it so much!

Wow. I love how it starts out as another innocent moment between them - Jim and Pam and playful banter - but then he has to fumble it somehow, just because he loves her that much. This is amazing. <3

It is sad! I agree! I know - they always start out so well and then something just changes in the dynamic. It's so heart-rendingly beautiful though, I just can't turn away!
