Ouch. Short, efficient, brutal. Well done.

I really like this a lot. It's a really believable but different (in terms of the fanfic-norm) take on Karen's reaction to a Jim/Roy fight. I actually think she'd respond ore in this way- taking care of Jim while silently stewing in conflicting emotions about what it all means in terms of hers and Jim's future together.
Lovely story.

He does love Karen (maybe)- but he's not in love with her, and I love how that just exists between them here, finally acknowledged. Gorgeous as usual.

I love how there's a resigned kind of understanding that neither one of them is going to hold up the pretense anymore, not just with each other, but with themselves. It's too much effort, and in the end, there's no real benefit.
I also like that Karen finds Jim and Pam's story almost comforting, but not quite.
Thanks so much for this.
cheers.

I absolutely loved this - it's amazing how beautiful you can make everything sound - It’s just another earthquake that ends in cracked pavement and shattered glass. is gorgeous - and I loved how you managed to make us feel for Karen, but still we knew this was the best thing to happen - and when you describe [I think it was the fourth-last paragraph] what she thinks of this love, that love rather, that epic love, it's just - brilliant. All sorts of it.

And Jim's I love you broke both my heart as well as Karen's, so.

I have to admit I clicked on this link with some trepidation because you have written satisfed-Jim/Karen before, but I loved this as much as I loved those.

And I'm going to read it again. So good, unfold!

I love the subtlety and clarity of this moment - how it all sort of comes into focus for Karen. Also, that when he says he loves her too - she knows it's not in the same way he loves Pam and he/they will never be able to talk it into being that. (If only the show's Karen face that once and for all!) Oh - and great last line - his 'yeah' is so simple, but so eloquent. Really a lovely thing.

Painful and gorgeous. Gorgeous and painful.

Also: perfect.

Sorry, nothing constructive here :)

Y'know, this was all very mellow for something titled "Earthquakes".

Wow.  So Jim said he loves Karen even though he doesn't?  I hope he wouldn't do that, but then again, I suppose someone could say that when they just wanted to love a person, or thought they should love a person.  I'm not sure.

I really like the fact that Karen calls him on it immediately, realizes that he doesn't, and gets out of it.  On the show, sadly, I think she would take that "I love you" and run with it.  Girl is holding on to Jim for dear life!

I like your "aftermath" approach with the flashbacks.  It's a real moment we're sharing with Jim and Karen, especially the description of his head on her lap.  Really good.

Author's Response: It's not that Jim doesn't love Karen. I think (at least in this universe that I've created) he does and he thinks that he means it when he tells her that he loves her. But she knows that he doesn't really love her the way she thinks she ought to be loved or the way he really wants to love her. She knows that his definition of love when he says it to her is very different from her definition, you know? What I mean is, I think he really believes that he means it, but she knows his heart is elsewhere.

Author's Response: In all that I forgot the important part: Thanks so much for reading. :)

Yeah.   This is beautiful.  Whatever Jim feels for Karen, it's not a tenth of what he has with Pam.  And everyone involved is about to find that out...

Oh my god, this was beautiful and so original.  First of all, for some reason, I initially assumed that it was Pam holding Jim's head in her lap -- realizing it was Karen was sort of like a punch in the gut (which says excellent things about your talent as a writer).  The fourth to last paragraph - when she's aware of how amazing Jim's feelings for Pam are - is so heartbreaking.  You really write Karen well here - Jim, too.

And this? "It’s just another earthquake that ends in cracked pavement and shattered glass."

Pure poetry.

Thanks for (yet again) giving us such a beautiful piece of writing.
