Tempted as I am to follow Ms. Hoo's TWSS review by saying something about Pam admiring the hardware/software, I'll refrain...and just say, sometimes (often) you're funny too. Thanks for the laugh.

Author's Response: Well thank you Miss Colette for the great compliment!!!  And thanks for NOT saying that thing about the hardware and software. ;-)

Oh, this is how that conversation happened. No doubt. Love Pam's subtle little prompts that Jim - of course - picks up. I have no doubt he's told her all those things many times before - but knowing he told her dad, and in that bittersweet context, was just so touching. Thanks for connecting the dots so well, Lovefool!

This is all kinds of sweet - and I like how you used a simple anecdote to illustrate each one. (My fave line: 'I still have bowls' ha!)

And, like Pam, I am a firm believer in clean dirt vs. dirty dirt. Like her, I also think Jim should take something off ;-) Would love to read his quirks too - if the mood strikes.

Author's Response: Yes, exactly--\'messy\' and \'dirty\' are NOT the same thing. Glad that made sense. I like to think that even the things that drive us crazy are what make us love the people in our lives...maybe I\'m deranged, but I can see Jim feeling that way, in any case. Oh, and I\'d certainly love to see him strip off his dirty jeans... but wouldn\'t we all. ;) Thanks for the review Colette! Always a pleasure to hear from you.

I probably don't need to tell you that these sorts of everyday moments are a personal fave - especially when they ring as true as these. Ditto what everyone has said about laundry, zombies, his not being a boy at all sometimes ;-) Luscious.

And count me in as another who thinks Jim is a reader. (In fact, he screams former English major to me.) I've written him that way in several fics too, and once got a comment along the lines: But he didn't read Angela's Ashes for the FTC! But I totally get that - I'm a big reader, yet if there's a book I'm not in the mood for, or it's not my cuppa, or whatever - just can't do it. (Thank god I was better about that when a student. lol.) Also, I think the point there wasn't about him not reading, but him not wanting to be excluded from anything involving Pam - plus his being such a goofball ;-) But I digress....I loved the part here about his having lots of books and his reaction to her suggesting he depart with any of them. That's my boy! This was great fun.

Author's Response: Mine too, Colette. All the little things they won\'t show us are the things that fascinate me most. I\'m very pleased the zombie thing went over so well. I know it\'s true of a lot of the guys that age I know, but it\'s one of those things we\'ve never seen about Jim. Of course, I also think he\'s way more of a geek than he\'ll ever let on, lest Dwight find out. ;) The reading thing... Jim\'s just too literate and witty to not be a reader. Or maybe I\'m just unable to separate that aspect of JK from Jim. But I don\'t think so. I\'m a reader too, but I won\'t read absolutely anything put in front of me, so I\'m giving him a pass on Angela\'s Ashes. (Also I agree with your take on what that was really all about.) Anyway, I\'m glad you liked it! Thanks for reviewing! :)

This hits the perfect note, on so many levels...first, (always first!) the writing - I love how understated and quiet this is. The big emotions come through so much more vividly for the lack of melodrama, and the simplicity of the telling. I also think you've nailed the characterization (even Toby - by not making him into a cartoon sad sack, just, well...Toby. ;-) I also like that you've been faithful to canon, then detoured into an AU ending that felt like it easily could have been canon too (for me, that's often where AU fics lose it.) Love that in the end, Jim loves Pam both because she's brave - and -  stupid. Perfect. And as for the steam - excellent dosage and real and mighty tasty. Well, I could ramble on some more, but I'll spare you;) Well done!

Author's Response: To have you mention the writing first is, of course, my greatest thrill. Thank you for that. And I know what you mean about AU veering off into something not-believable as a big problem with AU fics in general; it\'s why I don\'t usually go there. And Toby... poor Toby. Remember when he was just a sad character and not Evil Incarnate? :) Thanks so much for the review, Colette. This one kind of took it out of me... I\'m glad you enjoyed it! :)

You know, I've always believed they never saw each other again, after that fateful night...and usually in fic when they do, it's far too melodramatic to convince me otherwise. But, dang, missy - you changed my mind. This fits so seamlessly into canon, capturing precisely each of their states of mind/moods during that mysterious moment of disconnection. So much to love about their encounter in the bar - Jim's utterly heartbroken melancholy mixed with his first glimmers of bitterness - yet still, needing to finally tell the truth even if it's the death knell (your line about Dwight is absolutely killer.) Pam's almost spastically desperate effort to pretend it's something she knows full well it's not - hanging onto that like a life preserver. Oh man, the humanity;-) You captured it all, without over-writing it, so bravo for that!

But, rather than quote every other line, here's something I especially loved: how you structured this, beginning and ending in the same place: It was the opening iteration of a pattern that had yet to emerge... fantastic. And so spot on, for precisely that feeling I always got from S3 - which, btw, always reminded me of the final lines in Gatsby (So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.) Just the profound sadness/loss of never really moving on from what had - or should have - been.

So, yeah, I loved this. It's a sad and true thing.

Author's Response: Fwiw, dear Colette, I\'m entirely unconvinced that they saw one another, too. Weird? I was laboring under two assumptions as I wrote this - first, if they did see one another, it would have to be something very small (like you said, no melodrama; it\'s just not them); second, any sort of confrontation they had would, at the same time, have to be big enough to do some serious, lasting damage to their relationship. I\'ve never been fully convinced that Casino Night would have been enough to keep them so distant from one another as he transferred and she called off her wedding. I was aiming for something that worked in canon, so I\'m pleased that you think I\'ve managed it. As I\'ve said to other reviewers, I was really torn on that Dwight line, but your approval makes me happy that I didn\'t soften that blow. Finally, FINALLY, this is completely insane, but the original draft of this story, before I sent it to callisto, had that exact line from Gatsby as an epigraph. How about that? :) You always, always brighten my day, dear. Thank you so, so much for leaving such marvelous reviews.

How clever was this? I could so imagine young Jim, kind of smart alecky, but well-intentioned and sweet and funny - nice back story. Also that final exchange about Minor having his sense of humor surgically removed - and Pam's quick retort - was perfect. (Nice connection to that scene in LC-2, where Jim tells Dwight about his dad taking him the the Museum of Natural History and buying him a plastic dino too.) Really enjoyed this!

Author's Response: Thanks Colette. Since I have a sordid past as a dinosaur nerd myself, that scene in LC 2 really made me happy, and I decided to incorporate it into this story. I find Jim an interesting character - bright, likeable, and yet somewhere in the past, he\'s been conditioned to avoid conflict and is terrified to himself on the line. Something happened. But what? \r\nAnyway, I\'m delighted you liked this, and thanks for the review.

And, this might have been unintentional, but I like that Pam's final words were 'I do.' Sweet! Thanks, you!

Hee.  I think I was unclear there - because those are actually Jim's last words to her.

Works for me either way though. :)

I'm kind of thinking that a Sat. afternoon, going to a bookstore, coming home and having sex, then eating lasagna while watching a March Madness game and playing with your puppy sounds kind of ideal (with Jim involved, of course. ;-)

There are like a dozen great little details here that really make it come alive (the contents of her desk, her scuzzy mug, wanting to kiss her in the Cloister...) but what I find most interesting is how he knows her not drawing signals not being quite comfortable in her skin. I've kind of figured that after her intense experience at Pratt (and how it ended) she might be taking a break - just a little sketching on her own, maybe an informal drawing class here and there (as a veteran of art/design edu, I can relate to needing to go a bit low key with it, after a particularly demanding stint.) But, if she's not doing it at all - as you posit - absolutely Jim would know that meant something was off. And this: He said her name, kissed her navel, and parted her legs with a gentle but insistent hand...besides being hot as hell, in an understated way, it also says so much - he knows their intimacy is so tied up in reminding her how inextricably connected they are, despite whatever confusion she's going through. And finally, that last stanza - where he quite literally holds her together before she 'crumbles' -- just gorgeously put. I love his certainty here - I think you have that just right. Sad and hopeful and full of pure simple love. I'm rambling, so....done ;-)

Ah, bullet to my heart. If anything like this had happened at that point - this is precisely as it would have been. The reckless ecstasy of finally being with her (despite knowing the potential cost) and subsequent deflated agony of not knowing whether she'd come for him, or as retribution for Roy. Hell, I doubt she knew herself. So very much their psychodrama in S2. And, as usual, you include so many little subtle moments that make it feel almost painfully real (the scrabble convo, pancakes, how he tries to stop it, his nervousness about whether it was okay, etc.) And your final line is about as sad and true as I can imagine. I love when you write, Emily...I really do. ;-)

I'm such a sucker for fics that caulk the cracks in canon. Notice I didn't say crazy glue, cause the best of these - like this one - don't strain for farfetched scenarios or melodrama to flesh out what we've seen, they live in ordinary life. Like these characters. :-)

Using the photos as a touchstone for the progression of their relationship is a great device. There are lots of great little moments here, but I especially like how Pam doesn't think she's photogenic; how she pretends to want photos of everyone; and of course, the scene where Jim gets a bit too serious about wanting the photo (reminds me of the DT scene, where she says 'you can tell me anything' and everything is suddenly too raw and exposed for an instant)...and also, I got a giggle out of Jim taking pix of her breasts at the lake - such a believably dorky-boy (in the giddy throws of not quite believing what's finally happening) thing to do.

So, as I said on the board - thanks for this - it was a great tonic and a great fic, all in one!

Author's Response: Thanks a bunch, Colette. The thing I love so much about this show--one of them, anyway--is the practically unlimited opportunity to peek into back stories for things we only get a glimpse of. So many untold stories over the years of this flirty little friendship! You mentioned several of the bits that I was fond of in this story too, which warms my writer\'s heart no end (the part where she pretends to want photos of everyone--one of those white-lie scenarios I imagine happening all the time with those two). Thanks again for reviewing and giving me a shout-out on the boards. You already know I take a rec from you as the stamp of approval. ;) Gracias!

This must sound like it's an auto-reaction, but it's not - I love this. Here's a few reasons why: hooray for fics that acknowledge that of course Pam secretly had these thoughts about Jim, even back then; the feeling of an actual episode - the pitch perfect interaction with Kelly, Phyllis, Dwight, etc. And that's where this excels - it detours from canon (her admitting her fantasy to Jim) - but just enough, in a way that requires no suspension of disbelief. Bravo. Also, I LOVE how once she confesses her dream, Jim doesn't quite know what to do with that info himself, how he sort of lets her off the hook by telling her she shouldn't be ashamed (how perfect that he specifies he doesn't mean all people, he means her) - and makes it okay for her, with a deflecting joke. But, it's also clear he kind of stores it away in his mind. They're both so palpably in that unformed, embryonic zone here, still figuring out where the - sometimes uncomfortably tacit - borders are.

I'd start quoting lines to you, but alas...that would become an endless ramble. I did love their little exchange about Dwight's attire ( "He - you know what? Just wait for it." Hee!) Little bits like that made it seem so rooted in the show back then...as did the drink orders (each was so funnily character-specific)...and her perception of Jim's ease with himself...and the atmospherically sexy/intimate feeling of their sweltering walk to the coffee shop - that just so captured the flavor of how their most mundane time together could be so charged in those days.

Okay, so there's that disorganized ramble I promised not to do ;-) I'll end here, by saying your ending line It means nothing pretty much sums up everything back in that day.

Author's Response: Colette - I typed up a response and Firefox lost it, so let me see if I can reconstruct here... It always takes me a couple of days to find a way to respond to your thoughtful, generous reviews. Let\'s begin - of course Pam had these feelings about Jim and of *course* she was aware of them, even if wild horses couldn\'t drag it out of her. It\'s why she reacted so strongly when he touched her too much or for too long; why she delighted in his girlfriend\'s flaws; and why her reaction on CN was one of despair, not shock. She knew, she knew all along. And thank you for your compliments on that parking lot conversation - it\'s so so hard to know how much they would have said to one another at that point. I was concerned that Pam acknowledging her dream was too much, which is why I added Kelly\'s awareness of it as a complication - if she didn\'t tell him, someone would. I\'m pleased with Pam\'s snowballing confession and with Jim\'s excruciatingly careful reaction to it. It was nice to see her let go, if only for an evening. And, yeah, I wanted to sneak away from canon without losing the possibility that this was... well, possible. Finally, you should know that I wrote that last line with you in mind. I\'ve been fond of the less-is-more approach to final lines since I received your review of \"By Night.\" \"Nothing\" is Pam\'s own barely tenable denial and our collective ability to see clean through it. Again, thank you so much. It always makes my day to hear from you. Cheers.

Nice working in Pam's old fears about kids - and also, how she knows (even if she's kidding...sort of) that Jim will compensate for her (misconceived) shortcomings. And oh no! The dreaded minivan! (Just priced renting one today, to get my little baby to school with all her belongings in a couple of months...sob.) Oh well, I'm rambling, but this fic is like a good sitcom - lots of good, consistent episodes that make me smile and look forward to the next.

Author's Response: Aww colette.  Hugs to you for seeing your baby off. :(  I figure Pam would eventually start to freak and thought that this was a good time to bring it up.   There's not a lot of time left. :)   Thank you as always for the review.  I'm so glad you're enjoying this.

Sorry to see this one end...it was like my pre-natal vitamin, awaiting the season premiere ;-) But, clever girl, ending with Big Daddy Halpert, tying back into Pam's earlier entries. This especially made me laugh - so random, yet somehow perfect:

I could totally take Bob Villa in a cage match.

And I love how you end it with such optimism about the adventure they're beginning together: simple, hopeful, delicious joy!

Author's Response:

Me too!  I had a lot of fun pretending to be Pam.

Well Pam said Jim's no Bob Villa.  I think he felt he had to defend himself a bit.

I'm so very glad you liked it.  Thank you for going along for the ride.

What a great way to start this series - you really captured  Michael/Holly's patter. It's almost like they're scatting off each other - in some kind of syncopated dorky jazz ;-) And your ref to the improbable, but enthusiastic, French love for Jerry Lewis is the perfect analogy for how they appreciate each other. Really fun - and bittersweet now that she's gone.

First, long time no see, lady! So glad to see you pop up here.

This is so funny and apt - love the whole Michael/Jim/Pam dynamic - it's really the heart of the show, more than any of the romances. In fact, the office really is like one big extended, dysfunctional family - that only makes sense from the inside. And every word here feels so effortlessly 'inside.' I love that Holly gets that aspect of Michael - in fact, this fic reminds me of why I began loving the show in the first place.

Don't be a stranger, you ;-)

Blanca, I meant what I said on the board - your fic works much better for me than the actual episode did. I love how you did the alternating structure - perfectly suited to their ying/yang day, how they seem not to be connecting, when subliminally they always are. So many great moments here, but I especially love her putting on his boxers and seeing herself as confident and sexy in the mirror. And the ending is so lovely, with them going to sleep together, apart. Will read this one again.

You're here! How happy was I to see your name pop up? And, as usual, you did not disappoint. This captures that gnawing, unsettled feeling Jim had at the end of CA - just as I'd imagine him after deciding to go home instead of NYC. And I really like how just talking to her - in the most un-melodramatic way - sets his mind at ease and kind of resets him. This is funny and sweet and 1000% true to character. (I can perfectly hear them debating whether to bake or nuke the frozen pizza.) Well done, missy ;-)
