Started reading these, thinking I'd just read a few...and wound up reading them all. Like peanuts, couldn't stop. So sad and true and focused and evocative and...can't wait for more.

Author's Response: Thank you!  Good to know I can write addictive little fic peanuts. ;)

These continue to be totally riveting. Each one encapsulates something so true about each character, yet is so understated and nuanced. Looking forward to more!

I was so happy to see you'd updated this...have missed it! I didn't think I could love Toby more, then I read that last one. And this one - really funny, and captures that thing Michael has with Jim - for all Michael's obtuseness, he someohw gets it. Looking forward to more.

Author's Response: Awww, thank you Colette!  I was worried that no one would care since it's been so long. ;)  But I am finishing this thing!  I'm so glad that that weird bond between Michael and Jim comes across...I love those two together.

Aw. Especially liked the sketch where she wrote 'all in' and the one where Jim gives her art supplies. I'm a big sucker for fics that acknowledge Pam as an artist, and I especially love the idea of Jim recognizing this in her. He would. Now, if only they'd go there on the show. Nicely done!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! And especially for pointing out your favorite parts!

First you give me scorching hot JAM lust ('Round Midnight), and now you follow up with them on the eve of their wedding? This will either inoculate me against whatever triangular virus we're about to suffer in tonight's show, or set me up for massive disappointment. Hoping for the first option. And I'd say Beesly is the original hussy. Very sweet, very happy.

Author's Response: Well, I don't know about you, but I felt like this piece was a bit prophecy after last night's ep.  They so still love each other - this piece will be true eventually!

Adding to the chorus of babyfic converts - this was terrific. Everyone's voice was so present - especially Pam and Jim - and with the quickest strokes. It was almost like an impressionistic painting, actually.

Loved how Jim was so loving and still funny. And Pam was...Pam (not easy, even with 2X the words.) This was a gem:

And I'll have you know the next summer games are in London, not my uterus

Well, you restored my faith in babyfic and almost made me think it would be nice to be pregnant again. I said almost.

Author's Response: Wow - pregnancy nostalgia - nice! Thanks so much, Colette, for your notes on voice and character - I really appreciate :)

This song perfectly framed your lines (and made me nostalgic for once being very young/in love and listening to Joni Mitchell!) I love how you looked at both sides of each progressive moment - the incredible highs and doomed, inevitable falls back to earth. And with such simple, evocative language.

He takes it all, saves it all up, feels it’s like flight, above the clouds. Exquisite... Then: A pale shadow of how he feels. Such a painful recognition.

Just a lovely, poignant piece, Paper Jam. So happy with how it ends too: Like they never disconnected. Perfect resolution.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much, Colette. I painstakingly made each line eight syllables (except one, which I won’t point out. Oops), and that forced me to choose words very carefully. I think that’s a good thing, for me, and I’m glad it works. Really glad.

Definitely intriguing. And very well written. As nej points out, the challenge will be to keep this in-character and recognizably based on the show...I do think you can go pretty far afield in terms of plot (or there'd be no fanfic), so I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this.

What a nice thing to wake up and read on a dreary Monday morning. Your description of what Pam must have felt that first night in the parking lot was spot on and so sad. And how sweet when they kiss  - I like how you end it with them simply saying each other's names, like total recognition. Very nice.

I hope you will continue this as a series (although, I have to admit, I hope Karen doesn't hang around too much longer - I like her, just not as a triangular wedge!). Really interesting insights into her and her perceptions of Pam, Jim, etc. She's still so sketchy on the show, that it's nice to be able to 'read' her a bit more and this definitely helps flesh her out.

Author's Response: I really love Jim and Pam, to the point where I have completely driven my friends crazy. One of the things I love about the Office is its ability to draw its characters so realistically, to have them do things we hate yet still be forced to recognize that they are things the characters WOULD do. I felt like so far Karen has really been set up as Jim's love interest and I wanted her to be more of a complete person. Somehow as long as she isn't a completed character  the whole situation makes me uncomfortable, either because its too easy for the writers to discard her as a casualty in the JAM force, or because they still have the freedom to write her in a way that could alter the line of the story as we have seen it so far.  I  think I would feel better if I could really get my mind around Karen as her own person, who may be compatible or incompatible with Jim for reasons completely separate from Jam.  I guess its like getting into the mind of the enemy?

Okay, I can admit it now. The correlation between Jim's recent shirt color choice and Pam's dress actually has occured to me. But, I never thought of turning it into a story! Amazing. I love the rythm of this - how each section starts with a color. And the part about her making/applying his Halloween costume made me melt a little...I miss 'them.' Lovely, lovely. And glad I'm not the only one nutty enough to see (imagine?) the subtext in an oxford cloth shirt.

Aggressive Pam. Dead sexy Jim. All the elements for a lovely evening read! Now, I seem to recall reading some fine smut by you before...but this did have a particular zing. When she asks him to tell her what he's thinking, and he asks if she can handle it...then his answer. Swelteringly hot. And how sweet is their dialogue afterwards? Just delicious, that's all.

Author's Response:

Ah, my faithful reviewer.  :o) Glad you enjoyed it - don't know why writing smut gives me pause sometimes; it really mystifies me, actually.  I think (or rather, I know it has a lot to do with the fact that these aren't my characters originally, so sometimes when I write the smuttier stuff, I feel like I'm violating them in some way.

Then I get over it and write anyway.  ;o)

Thanks - as always - for reviewing!

And, um, where's your latest chapter of Inevitable?  Because I seem to recall you suggesting there might be more....

When I first saw the title of this, for some reason I read 'Patrick Swayze' and thought, what now? Three-way Dirty Dancing? That was quite a dream. And, I have to say, in your stories you really have a flair for describing Jim, um, taking care of his own business (I've alluded to it in stories, but you really flesh it out quite effectively..yeah, yeah, TWSS.) Anyway, any chance this can become a recurrent dream? Can't wait to see where you go next!

Amazing how quickly he takes off his armour. All she needs is to say that one thing. And I think he truly would too. Nice progression from angst to sweet/funny. Love the bit about the kitchen and the balls.  Away from the food, I hope. Too funny. Nice way to start my morning!

Author's Response: Thank you!  I, too, am under the impression that it won't take much to get Jim to bring down the walls he's built, but it is going to require Pam to step out her boundaries.

This chapter made me ridiculously happy - and, no, it's not just the drugs talking! You made both their feelings of being excited, nervous, wistful at unexpectedly having time together so real. Could really see Jim's face as he watched her skate, too - that adoring look he gets. And needless to say, Sasha should win a medal - and not just for Olympic skating.

Great kid-speak too...especially loved when she says We already went around like twenty-eleven times. (At around that age, my youngest told me something she wanted cost 'a buck three-eighty' which has been our term for any unclear price ever since, and this really reminded me of that.) Anyway, great ending...can't wait for the next chapter. Best medicine I've had in a while!

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you liked it.  And thanks for talking me off the Nicholas Sparks ledge.  I'm MUCH happier with my choice.

Kids are awesome.  My cousin once was questioning the exisitence of a certain guy with a white beard.  He rattled down the amounts he thought my aunt and uncle would shell out for gifts ($30 for him - $15 for his brother - $2 for the baby) and then factored in gifts for the rest of the family.  His conclusion?  Santa must exist "Because frankly I don't think you and Dad have that kind of cash."

:) So glad you liked it!!!

Well, if you're going to hell in a handbasket, I'll save you a seat. A happy ending indeed. And a happy thing for me to wake up to this morning!

Love how Pam confounds Jim's expectations (and not just re: administering torture.) I think  it's part of what he loves about her - he's always seen the Pam-within-Pam. And her finding him doing mundane things - the wrist action - so hot. The essence of Jim's sly sexiness right there.

Time to raise the bar Beesly. Perfect. This is precisely the way it's supposed to be (you know you'll get no argument from me there!) And you built so beautifully and colorfully to the point where she finally gets that.

Okay, I could ramble (oops, already have,) but I love how you've subverted this old familiar song and made it such an utterly delicious template for their story. The only thing about it that bugs me is that it's over. Know any traditional Easter songs?

Author's Response:

Cool.  We can totally do lunch. :)

I adore your rambles...so feel free to ramble anytime!!

Thanks for continuing to cite specific things that worked for you.  I'm so glad to know what I envisioned made it's way to the page.  It means more than you know.

Ah, the origami doves of love. Now I have this lovely image of Jim smiling at Pam during the 'awards' in OO, as those doves were unfurled behind his head. Mmmmm.

I like that you had Karen take the news with grace and that Jim and Pam are full-throttle infatuated now that they've pulled the trigger (as well they would be.)

And, am I reading too much into this: at the beginning when she mentions him 'distracting' her that morning, and he says: Twice....was there a shout-out there to his confession to Michael in The Convention (she said no...twice)?  Looking forward to the next chapter, but will be sorry to see it end.

Author's Response:

I hearby declare that they henceforth shall be known as "origami doves of love".  Awesome.

I like Karen.  I want to hate her but I can't.  I don't think she's as OK as she seems in my chapter but I think she'd try and put up a good front at work.  And YUM - full-throttle infatuation. :)

Good eye colette.  You're not reading too much into it.  I watched The Convention twice over the last 2 days.  I wanted to give Jim a better memory of the word "twice".  I think he deserves it. :)

Reviewer: Colette Signed
Date: December 28, 2006 Title: Chapter 10: Three: French Hens

Love how Jim first gets on her case about going to France - a day has passed and he's insecure and panicked she'll break his heart again and looking for a reason to be angry with her, convince himself she hasn't changed, braced for the worst...then, yay, Pam! She totally brings it. And love how afterwards, she's relieved that it's still just them, talking like they always have...just as she would be.

And how lovely is the idea of them together in Paris (always been a fave image of mine too - in fact, once mentioned it in a  story myself.) That trip would make a great fic, btw.Well done, Ms. xoxox.  Well worth waiting for! (And just the right dose of steam, I might add.)

Author's Response:

I could just see him having a day to think about it - how he'd still end things with Karen but be incredibly unsure about it all.  And yes.  Pam brings it.  FINALLY.  I have no doubt that's exactly how it would be.  They'd just easily fall back into their roles - even in the most intimate of situations.

Re: Paris.  In my very first Jim/Pam fic EVER in the couldn't be fluffier epilogue - I had Jim take Pam to Paris on their honeymoon and the idea is just so delicious I can't shake it.  It would make an awesome fic - are you volunteering??  :)

Re: Steam.  You know how I struggle with that - which is so weird because IRL I'm far from prudish.  Gotta say -the original version of this chapter was very nearly NC-17.  It was not the story I wanted to tell here however.  I'll just have to save it for another time. ;)

Thanks, as always, for your ever so thoughtful review.

Nope, does not disappoint. Love me assertive, passionate Jim.  We're not talking right now. And then another Hi from heaven...nice flashback there. He sure knows how to greet a girl.

Speaking of heaven, alert the Vatican, because they need to start considering Pam for sainthood. Can't wait until Jim does the right thing re: what's her name (oh, yeah, Karen) and they can finish what they started. You made it SO vivid that neither can he. (But seriously, what would Angela say about the way you've sullied this traditional Xmas carol...you hussy!)

Author's Response:

Sigh.  I love him too.  And I wanted him to take his time and process everything - but the way she teased him in 5:GR begged for some assertiveness on Jim's part.

Pam is a saint - but because of the conversation she had with Karen - I can't see her being able to do that...no matter how much it might be killing her (and me!)

Yeah.  I don't think Jesus and his Dad would be real keen on me translating the 4 Gospels to two people making out and talking about putting off premarital sex for a day.

Then again - it's a far from a lame b-day party. ;)

Reviewer: Colette Signed
Date: December 20, 2006 Title: Chapter 8: Five: Golden Rings

I'm on pins and needles.  You made Jim's sense of urgency (oh, my) and Pam's sense of mischeivousness/giddy anticipation of his arrival SO vivid. Jim in hot pursuit? And I do mean, HOT! I seriously cannot wait for the update...'Calling Birds'? Perhaps the ones outside her window that awaken them the, ahem, morning after? I know you've got this going at 'T', but really...when you make Jim that driven to get to her, it has to go 'M', no? (Or, would that be if I were writing it?) No matter, you have me in your (their) thrall.

Author's Response:

There might be a ratings change in this story's future - but there's also a lot to deal with in the final 4 chapters.  Yeah.  There might be some steam in the next chapter though.  After all - Pam's got a teapot sitting out on the counter.

Hee hee.  OK.  Maybe I mean the other kind of steam.

Stay tuned. :)

I know this one was a challenge, but you pulled it off with aplomb. I like how you worked so many iconic Jim-isms into Karen's perplexed description of him - and how they just don't jibe with her. Yet make total sense to Pam. Also loved the image of Pam brushing up against him 'accidentally'... and him 'not noticing.' Uh, huh. Sure. Karen's going to clue in, no doubt...if only I trusted it to happen in as reasonable a time frame on the show as I do in your able hands.

Author's Response:

Thanks colette.  This one was really difficult - because I - like Pam - can't bring myself to think of Karen as an out and out villian (nor should I).  I wanted to show how she's smitten w/Jim - and clearly likes him more than a little - but how she's just not quite the match Pam is for him.  I hope that came across.

And - yes.  There are no "accidents."  ;)

Reviewer: Colette Signed

As he watches her closely Jim can feel himself, actually feel himself sliding backwards.

That's it...for all his resolve, he's a goner around Pam. And the progression from light and jokey to conflicted/yearning is just right for their current situation. The terrain between them is so full of landmines and, as you say so perfectly, his 'armor' (which includes Karen, IMO) is ultimately useless.  So looking forward to 11 more days!

Author's Response:

Oh Karen is totally part of his armor.  She's almost like his shield.  He's putting her between him and Pam but it's not going to work.

At least...not in this story. :)
