What a great way of linking these vignettes (and oddly, I actually just saw Dreamgirls, for the first time, the other day.) The Jim/Pam and Karen parts are lovely and funny and subtle and touching and very, very believable. And great detail in the Wallace one -  perfect that he'd have cd's his kid made him and then switch to NPR (to be honest, that scenario hits a bit close to home here, lol.) This was completely delightful.

Author's Response: thanks! the linking started with just a vignette for karen. then i thought of the idea of pairing karen\'s unhappiness with pam\'s off the wall joy... and then i thought, what the heck, throw david wallace in too. i\'m glad you liked!!

This is sad, but so true to Roy, kind of like he's wearily picking himself up - to do it again. I really like the last stanza too - her looking disappointed...I guess he's used to that, huh? This is a wonderful and subtle snapshot of him, nqllisi.

Author's Response: Thank you, ma'am. I sort of got to wondering what Roy was up to, and how he's doing. I think he'll be OK. Happy New Year!

Well, look at you, Ms. Sneaky I've Got Writer's Block. And with a surprise ending to boot. Just delectable. Rocking out Jim, half a Twizzler, Kelly Hilton...and my favorite: Jim as Pam's own personal Disney World (if I wasn't so prim and proper, I'd make a crack about the rides ;-) Welcome back, darlin'.

Author's Response:

Oh geez Colette.   Jim as Pam's own personal Disney World.  Now look where my minds gone.  Let's just think of your latest chapter as illustration of that fact now - shall we?   LOL!

Thank you.  I appreciate it.

Love this! Really like how you took this simple premise - packing/going to the airport to leave/then...not, and made it feel so present and full. Great details too - particularly like how when he looks through brochures, he sees himself with her, not alone...made me choke up a bit. Also, nice succinct rhythm - I like the way you used the refrain like it's a mantra weaving through his thoughts. Also the way it's resolved so quietly with an intimate, sleepy middle of the night convo - and the lovely thought of them finally going away together. Emphasis on the together, lol. Bravo Mox!

I was going to wait for this to be complete before reading, but I couldn't hold out. I'm drawn to fics that use a consistent element/motif to focus on different moments in a character's development (tried it myself recently via haircuts, lol) - and I think you've chosen an especially good one to frame Pam here. That late night/early morning can't sleep zone is so often when the rest of the world fades away and our minds wander - anxieties getting bigger, anticipation more vivid, happy or sad. You've really captured that here - I could vividly feel Pam at every stage. This last one was particularly poignant - we know how disappointed she's about to be. So touching that she cleaned her apt. - bought flowers - her expectation/hope that he'll see it soon (be part of her life soon.) Broke my heart a little...but I have a feeling you're going to put it back together in the next chapter. I always love your brief, yet wonderfully detailed and so-emotional, small moments - and this is no exception.  ;-)

Author's Response: I am unbearably pleased with myself that I tempted you to read my WIP, I just have to say. Hee. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I loved your haircut fic, of course, and I agree that there is something cool about using a strong framework, like the outward structure gives you more freedom for the emotional content. And yes, "brief"- thank goodness I found fanfic, because I can't think of any other venue where such tiny vignettes would ever be read or appreciated! Thank you so much- more to come!

Ah, but their sleepless nights are only just beginning, lol. I loved 'Light' - how they talked until they were parched (precisely how I think their early days/weeks together went) - and there was actually something quite romantic about him bringing her a glass of water. Then this chapter...well, cozy, intimate, such deep connection...sigh. His voice calming the tyke down was a lovely touch. Enjoyed this start to finish.

Author's Response: Thank you so much. It was a pleasure to write- I don't think I've felt this engaged with my characters for a long time (and I love Pam, I truly do). It's been lovely getting all of your feedback, as well. You give me new insight into my own work, which is so much fun I can hardly stand it. Thank you again!

What a great riff on that fleeting moment in the bar that night (loved how he put his arm around her in that episode - so wordlessly revealing.) Of course she brings out his territorial (great way to put it) instincts, love that she makes him dizzy

-he just lets it go. I think that's it - finally being able to love her openly and having her return it is ironically a liberation from obsessing on her. Very, very nice.

Author's Response: i maintain that you write me feedback that is infinitely better than what i have written :) thank you v. much - i actually just finished a fic about the first time they held hands. i think i am fixating on these little things because the enormity of their being together is at times too much to bear.

This was great...each part was really apt, but I especially liked the Brenda one (I liked that he was self-aware enough to be embarrassed by his motives and how half-assed he was) and the Karen break-up scene was pretty much exactly how I imagined it happening. Lovely epilogue too...very clever.

After having a really crappy day, this was positively medicinal. Shades of their ecstatic joint Fun Run TH...love how giddy and goofy with love they ar here. Spot-on exchanges with each character, but this response to Angela made me laugh out loud: Jim crossed his fingers. "Countin' on it." Also, I think it's great that you never do reveal how he proposed - love that it's their secret - even from us. This cheered me up more than an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's. Thanks, you!

Author's Response: Awww...ranking higher than B&J? <ahem> Not sure that could possibly be! But I appreciate the compliment! lol. You know, I'm glad you enjoyed the fact that J&P didn't let the cat out of the bag in terms of the proposal and such. As much as my curious heart wants to know every detail of everything, there's something very charming about their need to keep things on the DL. I'm happy I could cheer you up Colette!

Such a clear portrait of his state of mind then - love how being 'okay' is used as a recurrent refrain -  kind of damned by faint affirmation. And the 2nd person makes it all so direct and present. This line especially got to me: This isn’t to say you aren’t still incessantly haunted by the thought of her mouth, her hands, her. Wow, so good, so achey. Need to read this again. (Coincidentally, I also once wrote a fic called 'Okay', triggered by that same hug in Gay Witch Hunt. What a loaded moment that was.)

Very nice. The show makes much of being set in a specific location, with 'native' characters, so I like the idea of going beyond simply using the real name of a local pizza joint or bar. Also - the idea of Pam speaking fluent 'Jim' is perfectly put - she knows the code - long explications are unnecessary. Something else I liked about this idea - by confiding his family history, and letting her comfort him about its legacy, he's in a (positive) way making her part of it. And that's a connection beyond dates and rings and private jokes.

Author's Response: Thank you for putting into words that connection with Jim's family. Yes, I was trying to get at that, in a not very effective way. As you say, by letting her in on a family tragedy, he lets her further into his life. That's the kind of intimacy that I see between Pam and Jim. Colette, as always, you bring so much to a review! Thank you so very much.

Well, fancy seeing you here ;-) And what a sweet return.

What lovely thoughts: lying on the couch, drowsily watching dopey movies on tv; unexpected smoldering glances under the flourescent lights; and especially - the idea of Jim as her oasis at the end of the day's insanity. And who doesn't like sleepy, loopy with love Jim? It all feels intimate and cozy and heady with that first flush. (And I like the Kate Chopin ref to your earlier story...I love doing those little callbacks - it's like having your own Yoknapatawpha Co. of characters and consistent history. What, too grandiose? Hell, you know what I mean. ;-)

Author's Response:

Must tell you, I let out a bark of laughter at your reference (on the Angela thread) to your first (9 1/2 lb!!!!!) baby as a "behemoth."  That completely cracked me up for some reason.  :o)  (And I'm loving how gorgeous Angela is while pregnant -- wow.)

Anyway.... Given your awe-inspiring penchant for capturing the mundane moments and making them magical, I'm completely flattered that this resonated with you.  While my initial impulse was to write them as way over-the-top and mind-blowingly perfect, I couldn't help but think that -- for them -- the magic would be in the mundane moments they'd never been able to share together (or rather, to REALLY share).

And I should also admit that I shamelessly stole a lot of this from my experiences with Mr. Girl7 early on (we worked together, too, and kept things secret for a while).

Finally, it thrills me to hear that you liked the Chopin reference!  I always worry that referring back to my earlier stories comes off as arrogant or pretentious, when in reality, I simply lack the ability to get past a history for them once I create it.  :o)  That you totally just GET it is no surprise, but I'm still ridiculously grateful.  :o)

As usual, thank you, my friend, for the thoughtful review!  (And now that I've got a bit of time on my hands -- for this long weekend, anyway -- reading your latest is literally at the top of my "To Do" list.  ...Insert crass joke about John Krasinski being number one on said list....)  :oP  Sorry -- couldn't help myself.

Holy frijoles...was not expecting that this morning. Need a moment to collect myself. Phew.

Okay. That was hot as a very hot thing. Jim has absolutely been thinking about this stuff for years and he may be a gent, but he's most definitely a BOY first (you know the end of Bridget Jones where she's all ferklempt from kissing him and says something like: Nice boys don't kiss that way and Darcy replies: oh yes they freaking do?)

Love that FNB rises to the challenges - and that just the thought of her dropping her inhibitions/being more self confident, is so uh, stimulating to him. Especially loved the apron one, because it was such an everyday/benign scene that became so erotic. But in the bright light of the kitchen, you know you're stretching the boundaries of her comfort zone...is deeply arousing. Now, that's what I'm talking about.

What makes this so sexy is that the characters don't get obscured by the steam. Nor does the affection (so often when I read really smutty stuff, I think - besides wanting to bump nasties, do these two have any feelings for each other? Their feelings here are implicit, without needing 12 fancy paragraphs to explain them - another scene killer for me. But I digress. ;-)

Will stop before I write another chapter here; but...you know this little gem begs for a sequel with Pam in charge, right? Have to admit, the idea of Jim being on the submissive/helpless side of the equation does have a certain allure. Just saying.... (Okay, so I'm greedy ;-)

Author's Response:

Good morning to you, colette!  Can I get you a coffee?  Beignet?  Anything you'd like, because you just totally made my whole weekend!  And if that doesn't tell you how much action *thumbs* this girl *thumbs* is seeing, then I'll just go ahead and admit that writing this story is the most stimulating activity I've had in quite a while.

Like Jim, I've been storing these ideas up for some time and I think this fic was started 3 or 4 different times, but it was just what you described in your review - two people, gettin' their freak on, with not a lot of identity or affection.  So, back to the scrap heap they went.  I'm so pleased you think the characters show through - high praise, coming from you.

Your comment about the fancy paragraphs...thank you so much for that.  I've fallen a little out of love with flowery prose recently - maybe a result of inflicting so much of it on folks with Allentown and definitely a result of being influenced by other writers here (like you, thirtypercent, nqllisi, unfold) who do so much with so few words.  I have great respect for that. </Jim>  Also, I couldn't resist a nod to Cooties (see what an impression that image made?  I can barely remember story titles, let alone CHAPTER titles) with the shirt off over the head.  This time, Pam's the one feeling weak and for totally different reasons!

Sequel?  I didn't even realize that the ending to this DOES read like a setup for a sequel.  ARGH!  I must say, I much prefer InControl!Jim, but something about the way you phrased that...helpless!Jim just became a bit inspirational!

I appreciate your thoughtful reviews so much and it's always so great to read your take on things.  Thank you so much!

Love how you've played with the language here - all the meanings and nuances of naming, 'calling'...it's not just facile - it's a truly fresh filter to view so many aspects of their relationship.

This perfectly encapsulates the desperation that drove Jim to finally confess: She was still Pam, still Beesly but not. There was an expiration date on his heart now, like one of her yoghurt lids. She was a Bride now. A wife soon. An Anderson forever.

So clear and insightful and wonderfully written.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for such a thoughtful, detailed, review. I\'m glad you liked this angle because with such a much loved, much thought about pairing like this, the hardest thing can be trying to find a new way to approach writing it. How fitting that they'd be detoured by Michael - seriously, forget baby fic, these two are already parents ;-)  Love when Jim realizes he can kiss her - their first date must have had that sense of being a little hard to wrap their brains around. What can I say? Another delicately written, quietly lovely, character-driven scene. I could read these all day.

I like how you almost incidentally worked in the actual situations from Initiation, but re-imagined them to fit your story. Also I think you've struck the right note with the Pam/Ryan relationship - Pam not quite being all-in, her slightly sardonic tone about 'them' - and how that throws him off his game (his attitude about Jim is spot-on for how I think Ryan felt about him.) Really looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

Just the right balance of funny, awkward, sweet, poignant, tentative...great build-up of tension too.  The emotional connection between them is all the more vivid for not being overwrought. And writing a sex scene that hot, while keeping it in character and that realistic, ain't easy. Really well done.

There are far too many things about this story I like to single out a line or two, so I'll just be general (lazy?) and say I think you've nailed the Michael/Jim thing. Its nuances (both funny and poignant) are all implicit here, and so revealing about both characters. I've said it before, but in S3, I missed their unexpected empathy/interaction as much as Jim/Pam...was so glad to see that being explored again in S4. Also really liked Jim's realization that no matter how happy he is with Pam, she can't be his entire life - precisely where I think (hope) his character arc will take him...whenever we get to see him again, lol. Great story.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! And, oh man, I miss Michael and Jim's interactions too. We had such an awesome one at the end of Survivor Man, where things were really starting to click for Jim, and even though the show ended shortly after that, it was still a great enough scene to hold me through the strike (so far).

Summary: Phyllis's Wedding Redux.  Pam's getting ready to leave with Roy, Jim doesn't let her.

From deep in the heart of the land of If Only. I love the tentativeness - I have a soft spot for fics about moments that are almost...and this captures the ache of that episode so well, then wrings some hope out of it. Just lovely. (And now can you stop with this prolific jag? Making me feel lazy here, lol.)

Author's Response:

Not my fault you're a slacker. ;)   It's been a long time since I visited this place.  I'm all S4 and fastforward to happily ever after.  I was struggling to get this to sound just right and then changed the whole thing to second person and it clicked.  At least I hope it did.

In any case - I'm very glad you liked it.   Have had a rough few days here and it means a lot that you took the time to tell me so.
