I read the four (thank you!) new chapters last night and couldn't even leave a review, because I had no words.  I reread all 17 chapters this morning.  I still wanted more, so I mapquested the neighborhood so I could remember.  I added the Central Park Grill (the CPG! So many great nights I barely remember!) so I could take the walk with Doug and Jim.  Sure, it's a little creepy, but it's all your fault.

I am beyond thrilled to see this updated.  Now you know that I'm not above begging, but at least this time it paid off.  It would be a crime and a sin if this were left unfinished.

These new chapters - man, everything rings so, so true in this situation.  What an amazing job you've done with these characters, the setting, their moods, inner thoughts and dialogue.  I know Doug is feeling a bit triumpant right now, but holy crap, I feel so sorry for everyone in this story.  My heart is just breaking for Molly and Pam.  Unfortunately, I know too well the feeling of being just lost for someone when for some unknown reason, it's just not right.  You've pegged Jim so perfectly and the guy-talk in the bar (I'm so glad I can picture the CPG and it's the perfect spot for this talk in my mind) is spot on.  I could go on, but I really, really wish you would.

Author's Response: Hey sweetie! So delighted that you like it and can feel it. I\'m in over my head on some shit right now, and it\'s a very good things to be able to exorcize some demons by doing this. Buffalo\'s gorgeous these days, btw...I love it here in the summer.

This is just gorgeous.  The description of fall and how people with kids count the passage of time, really lovely.  What a heartbreaking image...Jim up on the roof of Dunder Mifflin, alone, reflecting on the last ten years of his life.

I enjoyed reading this so much.  Your very first sentence pulled me in and it's so true of what you might expect:  "practiced charm" is a great way to put it.  I also loved how everything Jim does is (to make Pam smile).  Very nicely written in a really smooth style.  This is a place of welcoming, healingmirth, so you should just get...busy writing more!

Author's Response: If our dear Jim eats the same thing every day for lunch, he might as well use his powers of repetition for good, too, eh? Thanks, and I\'m glad you enjoyed it!

This:

He looks so comfortable. And for some really weird reason, she almost wants to cry, kind of. Not because she’s sad but because he’s happy and that just makes her so, so happy.

is so sweet and so sad and Jim and Pam's inner and outer voices seem very real and natural to me.  You'll be writing more then, yes?

I don't even know what to say about this. The last two paragraphs - Pam's disorientation when she stops to think about her old life - somehow, I felt disoriented.  You did such an excellent job of creating a whole life for them, that I forgot all about Roy and answering phones and all of it.  I ran away in my twenties and lived in a treehouse in the Caribbean for two years.  It can happen and you wrote it so well.  Just amazing and wonderful.

What a perfect description of this haircut, Colette - part sophistication and part little boy - and I imagine this is just how Jim felt about getting it.  "It's only hair" and just going along with it as part of his "new" self.  I really can't wait for the next chapter, cause I'm humming a little Bruce Springsteen right now.  Such a great story idea.

Author's Response: Glad you like the idea...it's been kicking around my head for a while and wouldn't leave me alone. Jim's hair is such a 'thing', eventually someone had to use it as a frame for a fic, right? And I agree - as 'mature' as that cut was, it just screamed little boy too. Okay, one more part coming - so, keep humming ;-) Thanks, Sweetpea (wasn't sure if this one would grab people, so the review is especially appreciated.)

Colette, everything you write is like foreplay!  Ay yi yi, a shirtless Jim getting a haircut from Pam wearing his boxers.  Damn.  I loved Kelly's idea that hair is the window to the soul - brilliant and perfectly Kelly!  I really loved Jim's responses to her, too - he's so uncomfortable/awkward/confused with her and that just makes me laugh.  You totally nailed that.  And I'm sorry to be a 12-year old (or Kevin), but I snorted at the first sentence and I'm a little ashamed. :)   This was such fun...thank you!

Author's Response: When I read ay yi yi, why do I immediately think of Ricky Ricardo reacting to one of Lucy's stunts?  ;-) Glad you liked, Sweetpea! I love scenes on the show where Jim is non-plussed by Kelly's comments - so happy you thought that dynamic came through. Here's what I love about (and writing) Kelly: she's like this oracle - mostly what comes out of her mouth is gibberish, but every so often, she says something that sounds inane, but is actually the truth, almost revelatory...I mean, within this context, she's right about his hair, lol. Anyway, thanks much for reading and reviewing - glad you had fun!

Thirty, I just can't say enough good things about this chapter.  Even though I knew what was coming, it still read so beautifully and so full of emotion.  The image of him sitting at the bar with his head in his arms telling time by what was going on back in Scranton is just crushing.  You know, I just don't know how you do it - there aren't a lot of words here and the ones you use are simple and straight-up but wow!  So much feeling.  So well done.

Author's Response:

Thanks so much Sweetpea!  After all the, uh, action in the first chapter, I was worried at first that the second would be kinda boring, so I'm glad it worked.  It's a good thing I have you around to say "write more here;" I definitely notice a big difference between the stuff I wrote before you were beta-ing and after.  Now I find myself looking at the older stuff and thinking "hey, too rushed!  Expand this moment!"  Speaking of which -- I completely blame the head-in-arms bar scene on you, because someone suggested I add more Jim disintegration. ;)

Whew, all this angst does take it out of me though.  Next step: write a chapter in which neither party cries.  I know, I know.  Lofty goals.

Again, I'll tell you that the Kelly-speak is just perfect!  I loved a little glimpse at macho!Jim, too.  Look, if we didn't have those rambling conversations about plot and what a character might or might not do, I wouldn't have had anything to do this time!  Besides, what Office freak doesn't like to geek out over every single bit of minutiae when she has the chance?  Really great work!

Author's Response: Ha!  So, last night I was at a friend/coworker's birthday party.  A few of us who work together were complaining about HR, when someone at the table I didn't know asked "does anyone here watch The Office?"  It wasn't until my friends (who know I'm a fan) started laughing at me that I realized my "YES." was about twelve times more emphatic than necessary.  She seemed a little confused, but brought up Michael's hatred of Toby.  Being able to geek out about minutiae = so much fun.  Thanks Sweetpea!

I loved it.  Somehow, I missed this first chapter when it was posted, so I got to read both at once.  I really liked how Pam's "I love you" came out.  In an unguarded, mundane moment, because it happens like that sometimes and because it means she's been thinking it for a long time.  I like that the start of their relationship is awkward and that he's still hesitant - I think that's very real and would crop up at unexpected moments and I like that you made Pam so patient with him.  She's a good egg, our girl is.  My favorite part is their little spat over him being late after her crappy day.  She would be in no mood for his goddamn comedy act (LOVED that) in that moment and I loved how he handled it, too.

Just a lovely and real glimpse of what those early months might have been like.

Author's Response: So glad you liked it, Sweetpea.  Pam really is a good egg, isn't she?  I like to say that she treats the world better than the world treats her.  Glad you liked the spat.  While I'm not one for griefbone crushing, relationship ending angst, I really enjoy trying to write realistic squabbles that get worked through.  Thanks for the review, and also thanks for Allentown.

Okay, I'm so glad it's a big, fat ring!  Pam needs a huge (but tasteful, I'm sure!) rock after that bit of shiny lint she had on her finger for so long!  Really loved the proposal.

Pam's dad - I love reading about people who are less than perfect and you did a great job with him.  We know Pam trusts her dad, but that's really all we know about him.  I think you filled in the blanks beautifully and gave a great backstory to why Pam would tolerate Roy's indifference.  Jim's recognition that there is more going on underneath the surface is perfect, I think.  It says a lot about Pam's character, as well.  I like that it reveals a bit about Jim's first thoughts about Pam and those seem spot-on to me - cute girl, wicked sense of humor, but she's kind of quiet...what's going on in that head of hers?  Yeah, that seems perfect to me.

More, right?  Okay, good!

Author's Response: I definitely think Jim is the kind of guy who would splurge on a ring, and I defintiely think he would want to be sure to leave Roy's in the dust.  Thanks so much for the complements abut my Pam's dad take.  My brief impression of  her mom from the show was that she was sort of fun and happy and pleasant, but not real complicated.  So, I decided that maybe Pam got that certain depth and gravity she has from her dad.
