"Do you love him?" His voice is low

Oh, God. Jim realizing he's losing Pam again. How AWFUL. But I wondered about her answer:

"I think I could."

Sounds a little like the end of John's reading of Brief Interviews. Coincidence? Am I reading too much into this?

I like that Toby is the first to realize this is not working. He's so sweet. Thank you for writing this.

Author's Response: That wasn't my intention, but it does sound a little bit like that. Thanks for reading! I'm glad you liked it--even if it was a little heavy on the angst.

Vignettes II by Colette Rated: M [Reviews - 41] 13
Summary:

A few light bits and pieces I'd accumulated (have written enough angst lately, thanks.) Since they were just languishing, I figured I'd resurrect Vignettes and send them out into the world. Each is a stand-alone, NOT a chapter in a work-in-progress, so feel free to jump in and out. (I'm thinking there will be 3-5 pieces, but will have to see how the mood strikes me.)

If I owned these characters, would I be writing this stuff? Seriously. No copyright infringement is intended.

That was about sheer physicality and movement and raw competitiveness

Oh, yeah!  The boy is breathtaking to watch. Like many lanky men, when he hits that long stride you can see that power unleashed, see that body doing what it was meant to do: cover long distances, jump higher, reach farther. Walking around in a suit all day just does not give that lovely long form the scope it needs.

I love Pam openly appreciating that physicality about Jim, and (ahem) acknowledging it on the way home in the car. I don't think I could keep my hands off a sweaty Jim, either.

‘God, I love you.’

‘I love you more.’

 ‘You are so fucking competitive.’

Brilliant Jam dialogue. Dead-on and funny and reminding us that Pam, too, has her competitive side.

And the line about getting him home into a bath? Echoing "Basketball"? You witch. :D I hope Pam scrubbed him really, really well.

Thanks for reminding me of one of the best Office eps EVER.

Author's Response:

So glad to hear that I'm not the only one whose practically fetish-ized that boy playing b-ball.  And fear not, it was a very 'thorough' bath. (And I know my hands would know no shame.)

Glad this struck your fancy...I so needed a break from torturing them. Thanks much for sharing my silliness!

when you kept screaming ‘Yes!’ about an hour ago, I kind of took it as an affirmation

That line is SO Jim. :D And SO hot.

He doesn’t let her hands go until he’s slid too far down her body to reach them any longer.

*Foom* That's me, going up in smoke.

And they absolutely should elope.

Colette, as always, you delight me with these little vignettes. :) Thanks for sharing them. Love their conversation in bed, their maple syrup kisses, and their concern for making sure their communication (now!) is as clear as possible. Thanks again.

Author's Response: Glad you enjoyed, nej. These are all about going to the happy place, I make no apologies. If you went up in smoke, my job is done...but please rematerialize soon! We need you. Thanks, as always!

I love how you encapsulate Jim's rotten day into one paragraph; excellent detail. Totally believable. I'd throw myself under a train.

The evil twin prank is so good I want to kiss it. I want to see this!

Pam cut him a ridiculously large piece. He responded by taking a ridiculously huge bite. He was ridiculously in love.

Awwwwwwwwww. How wonderful. CookingPam!

Pam had somehow managed to bake this elusive gift right into a chocolate cake.

Awwwwwwww pt. 2.

Not a bad birthday.

Ah. An echo of the ending of one of my favorite episodes, "Diversity Day".

Colette, this was so sweet and fun and Jammy! Thank you. I needed this after all that angst.

Author's Response: Glad to provide a PSA for Jamminess, nej. And also glad you picked up the 'Diversity Day' call out...wondered if anyone would catch that. Thanks for stopping by for a piece of cake - always a pleasure!

Ohh. Rage. Good fuel for an out of control Jim. You're building this well, harvesting those little, telling moments. I really like him getting angry in the vending room because Pam was giggling over the tension and he thought she was oblivious to his pain. Good moment there. Looking forward to more.

He hadn't given up so easily; he hadn't let go and begun "kind of seeing someone."

Thank you for acknowledging this in Roy. We can call it stubbornness, or we can call it faithfulness. How you see Roy depends on what you call that persistence of his.

I also like how you don't let Pam off the hook for having sex with Roy. She should feel guilty and anxious; she's taken advantage of him (ooo! BeardedRoy -- can't really blame her), but at least now she's owning her actions.

And I can only imagine the incandescence that will ensue once Roy learns the truth about Jim. Oooo.

You wrote her so well, so believably. I totally believe she would say and do this. Dammit.

Your last line is a killer!

Author's Response:

Oh, I know. My first dream of him finding out was of course an overly-hopeful scene of him confronting her, her admitting it, yadda yadda yadda, babies. But then I realized this would probably be closer to the truth. They repress so much. *sigh*

All of these little moments are wonderful, but being the Jammer that I am, this one really wrecked me:

Their first guiltless, completely sober kiss is raw and passionate and long; the culmination of a thousand missed chances.

Sometimes they wish he didn't inherit their criminal genius.

Oh, boy. A JamKid would be a real Dennis the Menace.

He gets it: he is who she is.

Ain't he ever.

Thanks for all of these. Great insight, and just enough "story" to glue them all together.

Author's Response:

Dennis the Menace!! See I was trying to come up with a way to illustrate just how horribly naughty a JamKid would be while talking to a friend but I just could not find the words! Thank you.

Thanks for writing a review, too; I've seen some of your other reviews and I like that you're honest, and everything, and you write just so well, so this review makes me feel good. ;) And thanks for thanking me, even though I haven't a clue where that came from.

Their relationship right now was a badly xeroxed copy of the friendship they’d once had.

Wonderful line.

Sometimes, when you weren’t paying attention, I’d run my fingers through your hair a few times

I don't think this is physically possible. There's no way someone would NOT feel that.

“Come on, Beesly. You know me how well? And that’s the thing that tips the scale towards perv for you?”

Ah. Wonderful Jim line. I can hear him saying this.

Author's Response: i'm glad you liked (most) of it, lol. as for the fingers through hair thing, i really should have described that better. in my head, he's only playing with the ends of her hair. my boyfriend does that a lot, and i never notice it. most of the dialogue is actually based on a late-night conversation i had with him. re-reading it, i totally agree with you, so i'll probably change that a bit to get the visual right. thanks! :0)

Phyllis thought it would be fun to serve moon pies and Tang

I'm laughing so hard my co-workers think I've lost my mind.

That girl talks too much. And the other one is afraid.

That is SO River.

Meredith's reaction on seeing Jayne, Michael's reaction on seeing Inara...just dead ON, Par5. "Sooooo....you bunk alone?" Heh heh heh.

OMG! River putting Michael in a headlock! And then putting Dwigt in a headlock! Thank you!

The Inara/Angela slap seemed a tad harsh, but I understand why you put it in. I think Angela would be more intimidated than outraged, and Inara is used to Mal calling her a whore, so why would she object to Angela doing it?

The Mal/Jim interchange re Inara, "How long have you been together" is a classic. Two guys who are experts in lying to themselves/hiding their feelings but who can immediately spot that the other one is madly in love and can't express it..., oh yeah. Hot.  (BTW, it's "backpedal", not "backpeddle".)

And your ENDING! With Pam suddenly being inspired by River to make a move with Jim....wonderful! I usually hated River, but here you made her mysterious and deadly and intriguing and ... and useful!

This story is so rich and so completely true to the characters of the whole Firefly crew! I envy you.

I seriously could not imagine HOW anyone could combine a paper supply company office in Scranton with a space ship, but you did it. Congratulations.

Author's Response: Hee! This was the fun chapter. Hardest thing? Not having them all in a starring role. But as you pointed out, at least Wash is alive in the AU... Maybe the Inara slap was a cheap device but Angela did screech it loudly and we could assume that Inara had to endure some other Angela-isms prior to the name calling that added to the provocation. Mal/Jim? Big time parallels there that I never even considered until I started writing then they seemed perfect together.

There's a lot of River hate out there - I think the problem was they didn't get to her kick-ass abilities before the show was cancelled and there was a bit too much whining on her part but I thought her childlike naivete would work well with Dwight's. And as usual, I shamelessly use whoever is available to get Pam off her butt and moving towards Jim.

So glad this came across as plausible and thanks, as always, for your extensive feedback! See you 'round the 'verse.

Reviewer: NeverEnoughJam Signed 10

I was only five lines into this before I was grinning like an idiot. How WONDERFUL to hear Mal and Jayne's voices again! I have missed them so much, and here you have PERFECTLY captured the way they speak. Joss Whedon would be so proud.

And THANK YOU for giving us back Wash. I love that guy. And his relationship with Zoe.

I gotta admit, the idea of Michael Scott as interplanetary entrepreneur takes a little getting used to. But then you added CREED as the facilitator, the guy who knows smugglers (of COURSE he does) and it was absoltutely perfect!

"Live long and prosper!"

Oh My God! How hilarious!! That was so unexpected, and yet So Dwight! I was (excuse the expression) ROFLMAO.

Only thing I found out of character was Jayne leaving Vera in Michael's office. I can't see Jayne letting his weapon get out of arm's reach for any reason, pretty ladies notwithstanding.

"You're reading that upside down," he said with disdain.

LOL! Yes, I imagine Creed actually CAN read a paper upside down and make perfect sense of it.  And cursing in Chinese! Of course he would. Wo hen xihuan Creed (I love Creed!) His internal musing about never having met a species where men bore children was a little confusing: in the Firefly 'verse there are no aliens. But his speculation on Jayne is hilarious: is he thinking Jayne is a former lover, or maybe his son? Wonderful either way.

The transition to the beet farm seemed a tad abrupt, but I totally believe Jayne's turnaround after blowing away Dwight's target. And you got Mose into the story! Extra points for that! :D

And I love Michael picking up the Firefly lingo at the end.

Too funny! Thanks for this!

Author's Response: Thanks neverenoughjam! Knowing you're a Firefly devotee makes your words even sweeter! Michael as the cunning businessman is a little OOC but every now and then he does do something right. The transition was abrupt - it was one of those things that got short shrift in my zeal to get it (finally) done. Might go back and work on that. Using Creed - since he already spoke Chinese on the show - was a no-brainer! And Michael with the lingo - always trying to be one of the cool kids. Glad you enjoyed it!

"If you don’t count the three or four years that you owned me"

Oh, yeah, did she ever. I love this line. Jim has that insight into himself, had it all along probably, but it didn't change anything. I like how you get all of that into that one line.

Loved the all too brief fantasy of a three way with MARK that you conjured in my head. You witch.

I loved Pam needling Jim about her crying on Dwight's shoulder. That's precisely the kind of thing that would make him squirm like a cat on a hot stove.

Sometimes she thought she’d be happy living in his pocket,

Hell, yes. Right there next to his. Um. Well. You get the idea.

‘I still can’t sleep without you,’ he murmured,

This is just all kinds of awwwwwwwwww. Lovely. As is this:

‘I only have…one chair in my living room.’

‘So what? You can sit in my lap…or I’ll sit in yours.’

And "frankly, the whole living in sin thing is kind of hot" sounds just So Jim. Perfect.

Wonderful last line. Well done, as always, Colette. Thank you for sharing this.

Author's Response:

NEJ! As always, you tuned right in to a couple of my personal favorite lines. And really, could I possibly have been thinking such a thing when I mentioned living in Jim's pocket? Moi? You know how innocent I am.

I agree - I think Jim was always painfully aware of the situation, but it was a force bigger than he was...hence his current defense system (you know, the one with the really bad make-over?) Anyway, this was just a light snack, but so happy you dropped by to share it. Thanks, you!

She even fakes a yawn, but her cover story fools no one. Not sure why a bride would think she even needs a cover story on her wedding night. This was the only slightly false note in this, it sounds like a much younger Pam here.
