Isn't this a sight for sore eyes? I love stories that fit effortlessly within or between episodes - that reinvent them while remaining true to their spirit. Not an easy thing to do - and you do it SO well here. Especially like how you flesh out the events of PW (Karen with her Blackberry, hee!) and seamlessly leap frog to the actual season's resolution, recasting it in wedding, instead of beach, mode: Pam's bravery in admitting her feelings, her I wish you would, Jim needing a little time to sort out his heart/mind (not to mention his Karen situation) in the wake of her overwhelming revelation. You re-weave it all together so poignantly...it feels just right. Great dialogue, and little character bits (Kelly/Ryan ;-) - all captured succinctly, without histrionics or protracted 'plot' complications.
Okay. I'll stop. Can you tell I liked this?
Author's Response: I've always loved that one deleted scene where Karen is all over her BlackBerry and Jim looks so visibly annoyed. It's just one more piece of evidence for how they're not right for each other. Anyway I've been kicking this idea around for a while as one of my many 'what if one thing had changed' AU scenarios. I was a little worried about using that line from Beach Games so I'm glad it didn't seem too cheesy. :) (I'm always loathe to use much dialogue straight from an episode.) So glad you liked this! Thanks for the review.

Tonight's episode reminded why I love this show....and this reminds me how wonderful our little fic world was here. Lovely and sexy (especially that last part - love Jim, uh, getting ahead of himself with excitement) ... exactly how I imagine it would be if there were a spy-cam in their bedroom during this period (only, not manned by Brian, cause eww.) But I digress. Thanks for this sweet bonus gift, you :-)

Haven't read a fic in many moons, Ms. Jazz, but so glad I did! I love me some angsty Jim - but only when it derives from a believable, true to character circumstance - and this is exactly that. I love that you've shown him to be a wonderful, loving father, but not without conflict or self-doubt...i.e., like an actual dad, not Daddy McPerfectpants.
Cece's reassurance is spot on: I don’t care what you do when you’re at work ‘cause I’m not there. Exactly how a kid that age thinks.
And finally, thanks for not tying up the ending in a perfect tv bow...even great parenthood is often a complicated, ambiguous business. As you so clearly show. ;-)
Author's Response: Well, thanks very much, Colette. I kinda hated to almost give it to Jim and then pull it back, but as you say, it's never that pretty in real life. Any motivated parent spends a lot of time wondering if they're doing anything right. Our Jim's got some thinking to do now. I laughed out loud at "Daddy McPerfectpants." Thanks!
Spoilers through the Ultimatum.

Look at you with the fic, babe! You still know how to make it flow, to nail the characters and their banter so naturally - and all with such unfussy deft touches - that I just get pulled in and enjoy the ride (like a good episode of the show.)
Thoroughly enjoyed Pam's exasperation- sick schmick when you're the mom. Especially loved when she succumbs to Jim's charms: "You're such a bastard." Ha, perfect! And clever title too, missy.
Thanks for this unexpected treat - more fun than a feverish Jim Halpert. Wee!!!
Author's Response: Colette my dear, thank you for the thoughtful review! I especially enjoy being told I had unfussy deft touches! Lovely! Thanks for props about the title too! I thought it was pretty clever myself! ;-)

I rarely get into AU's, but this one hooked me (sat down to read a chapter or two, and ended up reading the whole thing.) I think this works so well because it's so well tethered to the actual show...the 'real' bits you've woven through feel natural and keep the characters recognizable (my usual gripe with AU.) It's like you've deconstructed the story, but kept the essential elements intact and reassembled them in a believable way. Very clever! This chapter screams that old S3 tension - all unspoken longing and frustrating crossed signals. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this next.
Author's Response: Wow,thank you so much for this review. I'm so glad you found the characterization to be spot on because whether it be AU or canon, that is the most important thing for me. Plus, I love having elements of the show in the story because...it is fanfiction, you know? What's the fun if you pull out all the elements of the show itself? Anyway, yes, this is definitely old school tension, which is so incredibly heartbreaking. Hope you stick around for more, thanks again. :)

1st, thanks for not abandoning this to the tomb of the unknown fanfic. 2nd, the lost week is more often written from Jim's pov, so thanks for giving us Pam's half of that mysterious equation.
And mostly, thanks for doing it so well. You've distilled her emotional arc into well observed moments - looking for hope in are we out of toner (semiotics was never so bittersweet); saying good luck, not goodbye; her strained dynamic with Karen; and my fave: His profile is harder, each side so different. Literally true about his face, but also such an eloquent metaphor for her sense of being caught between the Jim she hopes is still there (hers) and the newfangled one she fears he may have become (Karen's)...The scattered pieces of Jim all around her...
Each brief section is as rich as a chapter. Complex emotions/specific characterization in few words - knowing when enough is enough...man, I love a well crafted one-shot. Haven't read much fic lately, so this was an especially lovely treat.
Â
Author's Response: Thanks so much, Colette. This particular week has always inspired my imagination but it does seem like Pam always gets left out of the equation, doesn't it? I guess because we pretty much already know what's going on in her mind; Jim's the mystery, here. I'm glad you liked it, thanks for letting me know. :)

This is so sweet and funny, without being cutesy (a fanfic pet peeve of mine.) I can hear Cece speaking in your dialogue - and even better - she actually sounds like Jim and Pam's daughter. (Just ignore...ha!) Totally fun!
Author's Response: Colette, so nice to hear from you, since I loooove all your sweet stories! Glad it's not too cutesy for you and that she sounds authentic - what a compliment!

Such a treat to drop by here and discover this and a new story by unfold. Double scoop!
And to quote Pam: 'I haven't asked you to stop.' Seriously, thanks for updating. You've still got it in spades, my friend.
Author's Response: Oh, you're too kind, Colette! :D
Date: May 10, 2011 Title: Chapter 4: Transportation
First, hi Annabel! Long time no read - what a nice surprise.
Really enjoying your (sort of) Before Sunset premise of their re-meeting years later in a totally new context - so much giddy freedom and romantic possibility in being alone together, far away. Love Jim's attempts to conceal his excitement and nervousness, Pam's unexpected directness, how quickly they find their own patois again. Great last line in this chapter too - you're always so good at building that delicious slow burn tension. Frankly, at this point if you said the next stop was the British Museum and Little Friskies, I'd still be psyched to see what happens next.
Author's Response:
Thanks, Colette! I have a specific idea of what's happened to both of them in the time apart, which makes it kind of fun to write, because in a way they don't know each other as well as it seems. And Before Sunrise and Sunset are definitely influencing me. "Baby, you're gonna miss that plane." So amazing.

The ground reels under his feet; he feels drunk and concussed and wonderful. Unhurried, grateful, sloppy kisses, slow explosions of color and light behind his eyelids. This is happening.
You sure make it feel like it is.
Concussed is so apt - Jim seems hit upside the head, both awakened (something inside him roars back to life) and thrown totally off kilter. And I'm loving growed up Pam, owning it. You make the momentum here so tangible, this particular place/mood so vivid. What's that you said about a pub? Feeling suddenly parched....

S3 parking lot tension you could cut with Dwight's machete...I'm hooked. You've captured their conflicting emotions and the mood so succinctly - just what it takes to build this sort of taut momentum. Looking forward to the charming third...thanks for this, babe :)

Thanks for this lovely gem. Especially love how Jim wills her to look back as she walks away, and she does...then that final smile between them - such a subtle but auspicious note to end on. Also liked the traffic light that's never green, yet suddenly is - nice little metaphor there, my friend.
Author's Response: Thanks, Colette. Metaphors are fun. :) I worked on that careful conversation for an eternity, but the looking back was how I planned on it to end right from the start. Glad you liked it.

You heretic, you! I never thought I'd read a fic where I was relieved to learn Pam had died...and enjoy it! Clearly, that's due to your writing; this is sad, sexy, full of palpable inner conflict and even a bit hopeful. I also appreciate your focus on one, concise experience, rather than 10 chapters about his struggle - packs so much more of punch this way.
Personally, I don't see a few days < a year as unbelievable. I (sadly) have two friends who've lost spouses - neither the reaction, nor its schedule, is always what you might predict. Sexy as this was, it was also clearly about a bigger catharsis, just the start of a long road ahead. Had Jim jumped into a major love affair that soon, or were it just about bonking...that would be harder to swallow. (No TWSS intended, I swear!)
What next, you write a story that makes me glad to see Pam run away with the circus, and Jim marry Karen? (I kid. Please don't.)
Btw, 'It was time to pick up his children' is a perfect last line...so poignant, in so few words.
Okay, I need to finish with a question: did you name her Allison as a ref to that other great old Elvis C. song? (I hope so, cause that's my fave ;-)
Author's Response: Oh colette, thanks for the thoughtful review! I knew this one was not going to be "popular" but it's gratifying to see that you liked it for what it was. I've had friends who have lost spouses as well, and yeah, it's not predictable what grief does to a person. A 30ish year old widower with two little kids is a mixed up soul.
My next story is called "Water for an Elephant" and it's about thirsty, pregnant Pam, who goes off to join the circus and leaves Jim for a vampire. How'd you know? I jest, but never fear, I will never, ever, in my wildest darkest gnarliest moments, write a fic where Jim marries Karen - I swear by my fav Kurt Elling album. (it hurt to even type "Jim marries Karen." Ouch.)
And by jove, you got it. *sings* Alison...my aim is true...my aim is true.

Saw you'd written a new fic (!) and got a serious pang of nostalgia/the show ending (hadn't really processed it much before.) Smart, true to character, emotionally believable, sexy, and ending with the lovely, signature JAM hello. Nice. Haven't read a fic in ages - so glad you lured me back!
Author's Response: Colette, you were among the authors that first got me into this, and I have to confess when i wrote this I particularly hoped you would read and review. So glad you liked it and so glad you're among those of us hanging on until the end. Thanks so much.
