I love that you've got cute little Jill in a tiara and pink party dress while parents dork it out in front of the camera. So cute! I'm with Jim---I'd pay some serious money to see this sold with the documentary! Anything from you is a pleasre, LoveFool...but this was just delightful!

"No poison, just sex."

That's absolutely what I look for ina roommate ;) This whole series is just way too good for words: the banter's spot on, the getting to know you so cute and accurate. This last chapter was interesting with the hint of angst...but totally believable. I have no doubt that they've talked about the Roy factor, but I can totally see Jim letting out just how much it really got to him when he's just completely wasted. And he's a cute drunk! Also, can I say kudos for using the basketball "let's get you into a tub" line? Because I've always been fascinated by that line for the very reason you've pointed out here: it's Pam trying to convince herself that, oops, yep, Jim's hot and that's not a good thing so let's try and remember that Roy is the fiance.

Anywhoo, this was so so adorable, and just what I needed before I start the work week!

Author's Response: Catie9! So sorry I missed this review the first time around! Not sure how I did that...but none the less. I'm glad you and Jim look for the same qualifications in a roomate. lol. SO glad you enjoyed the chapter this much and you're liking the series!

Ok, if there were an award for making me spit my Diet Coke out and onto the screen...you'd win, hands down. That last little exchange, particularly Pam's response (I know you're aware of it as you wrote it, but I can't help repeating it here, so here goes...ready?...That's appalling Jim...but ok.) had me cracking up!!

They are so effing cute and we finally get them back in April...but I'd still like to read more from you before then! Because the way you write them is just all kinds of delicious.

Awesome job, LF! Oh, and I loved the shout out to Philly Jim!

And I'm off to listen to Back in Black...which will most likely be stuck in my head for the remainder of the day

Author's Response: hehehe...thanks Catie9! I will definitely try my best to get something else out before the big day! I'm so happy they are coming back too!  ALSO...I love making people spit things on their screen -- now I'll just want to do it more. ;-)

girl7!!!!! Another update (different story, I realize, all still gold)!!! I love that you have Pam tell Jim about the Dwight comforting her moment the night they're at the beet farm. It just adds so much to Jim's realization! This was a great end to a wonderful story, and while part of me is sad that it's over, another part of me realizes I still have "Nearing the Edge" looming on the horizon!! Great stuff!!!

Author's Response:

I'm glad you liked that moment; I really had hoped to see Pam tell Jim that.  (Actually, I was really, really, REALLY hoping that in BfV, Jim would come around the corner and find her crying.  But the scene with Dwight was so precious that I wasn't too disappointed.)

Just updated Nearing the Edge, BTW.  :o)

Thanks for reviewing!

Wow. I literally have no way of my own to conceptualize what you've done here, so I'm forced to rely on a comparison. Have you ever read Ethan Frome? It's my favorite book of all time. That's not really relevant, but I'll throw that out there regardless. Anyway, it takes place in this snowy little hamlet in Massachusettes and tells the story of Ethan--a man who once had these vibrant dreams and desires that eventually faded (never died completely, mind you) due to circumstances out of his control. The quiet, deceptively gentle environment of his town is ultimately, victoriously defeated by human emotion and desperation. That tone--the reason why this book is my favorite of all time--is exactly what you've created here. Your story is quiet, moves along almost as if you're telling it underwater. It's smooth--almost temptingly so--in that it feels like we're watching these characters from miles away and through foggy glass. The minute Jim writes that letter though, and he finally gets it, the glass disappears, and it's like I'm watching you tell my story. The circumstances surrounding Jim's revelation, while beautifully executed and wonderfully told, are not the main reason why this story resonates so heartily with me. You're summary says it all: it's an understanding of grace, a willingness to live in spite of life's unfairness, and the simple necessity of human connection that make this piece as potent as it is. Simply amazing!

I'm seriously diggin this. Also, bonus points because I, like Jim, had no idea what color vermillion was. He's right...it does sound like a green.

Author's Response:

Thanks Catie9! And, exactly!  I chose those colors because I did in fact used to think that chartreuse was a purpley color, and vermillion green (maybe because it's reminiscent of 'verde'?), so, I'm glad I'm not the only one! :)

Hahahaha! Three things:

1. I'm so glad you used Pam's painting (well, a variation thereof, anyway). I've always felt a little gipped that we didn't get to see just what Jim thought about it.

2. "You know..." thirtypercent's yada yada yada. For the record, I cannot WAIT until they you know! Pam misses it, Jim misses it...they should be *not* missing it together.

3. Pam has a thing for citrus. 'Nuff said. Hell, I'd like a corndog covered in chocolate if it was in Jim Halpert's hands. Oops..was that a Fruedian slip?

Great stuff, thirtypercent! I just love this!

Author's Response:

Thank you Catie!  Yeah, I always assumed Pam's painting was meaningful, and if she and Jim had been getting along I thought she would have made it even a little more obvious.

Ok, *I* can't wait until they 'you know.'  I'll be writing these scenes and thinking to myself "Just kiss him already!" ...which probably makes me strange.  But, there's a way I want to have it done, so....

And re: #3 -- ha!  You and me both.  Thanks so much for the review!

It's an interesting concept, and one you've done an amazing job with! And I love the image of Jim slipping her notes a la middle school to ask her when she knew she wanted him...definitely not middle school. Or at least it wasn't in my day. Standing in the grocery store holding a plastic carton of strawberries to her nose, then glancing up to find him watching her, the expression on his face almost dazed, as if he still can't believe it's all real.

This image strikes me as quietly beautiful. It's so serene, and true, and just Jim and Pam to an extreme for me. And that's a lot to get out of a line about buying strawberries. For me, this little insight is the core of what this story is about.

I just reread The Awakening for the first time since HS, so this story is serendipitously timed. And it makes perfect sense that Pam would idenify with Edna. I mean, apart from actually having gone through with the marriage and having two kids that are constantly demanding bon-bons, they are one in the same. There's just something so warm and so right about imaginging Pam reading while Jim dozes beside her. You have quite a knack for this, missy, and I'm off to check out the rest of what you've got going on!

Author's Response:

Wow -- what a great, thoughtful review!  Totally made my day, I have to tell you.  :o) So flattered at your first comment re: the strawberries scene being the core of what the story's about, because that's the sort of...sense I was hoping to weave through here.

And YES -- I was feeling all warm and fuzzy when writing the scene with Pam reading and Jim dozing beside her.  I'd imagine it would take them weeks and weeks and weeks just to get used to even the quiet moments, you know?

Thanks so much for reviewing!

Gaa! Wow, that was insane. I'm pretty sure you broke my brain.

I love the concept of Jim and Pam pushing boundries, sexual (YAY!) or otherwise. The beauty of the thing is that they usually go hand in hand, and you've articulated this extremely well.

Jim's obviously (deliciously!) a man, and he's certainly going to have some fantasies that revolve around Pam. Now that he's with her, they won't dissapate, like you said, and he's going to be even more encouraged to push them into reality. And Pam is more than willing to participate.

Great job, Sweetpea...and man, so hot!

Author's Response: Catie, even your reviews are beautifully written!  Thank you so much for such sweet comments.  There isn't anything quite like the first heady days of a relationship with such strong attraction, is there?  It's no wonder S4 started off with a beautiful new Beesly and a much-satisfied looking, almost smug, Jim.  All those itches are getting scratched!  Hoping for more Challenge from you, too!

Ha! This is so great! I love how you handled reentrance of Karen into the picture. I think the hardest pill for me to swallow with in regards to her and Jim was that I liked Karen. For the most part, all that was wrong with her (in terms of Jim) is that she wasn't Pam. And you've shadowed this into the background of her run in with Jim at the grocery store. They both know they don't belong together, they're both happy now with their respective partners, and while Jim obviously still feels bad for how everything went down with Karen, seeing her again reminds him of how much he wants to be with Pam. And Karen's right: there's nothing Jim could say that either she hasn't already forgiven him for or won't ever forgive him for.

So, in conclusion, this was delicious, silly, funny, heartfelt, and full of a certain kind of closure that really lets these characters move into the next phases of their lives. Awesome!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! I think that in another universe Jim could have been happy with Karen, and they would have made great friends. I'm just sad that they couldn't make it to that point.

Wow. I mean...just, wow. I definitely fall down on the "like it a lot" side of things. The PHiladelphia Story is one of my favorite movies of all time (making a mental note to check out Annakovsky's story), and the Great Gatsby is right up there with my favorite books!

This story is so quiet in it's intensity...like the GG, there's something so brilliant working underneath the surface, and it really allows such a seemingly silly fight to be about so much more.

I've never thought about Jim and Pam's relationship in comparison to Gatsby and Daisy before, but it make a lot of sense. As I write this, part of me thinks that had they gotten together before Casino Night, or on Casino Night as the case may be, Pam could have very easily turned into Jim's Daisy. But because he saw her topple of the pedestal he'd put her and allowed her to become wonderfully human, they're allowed a true chance at being together.

So, in conclusion, two things:

1. I absolutely loved this story.

2. I'm going to go dig up my old copy of Gatsby and reread!

Author's Response: I know! I made myself want to reread it. It's one of my favorite books, and the Daisy/Gatsby relationship is one of my all time favorite dysfunctional relationships. I think you're absolutely right, Pam had to sort of fall from grace in order for Jim to see her as flawed and not expect some ridiculous standard that she couldn't live up to. I'm so glad you liked it!
