Love Toby. Love him here. His loneliness really comes through - the empty seat, the pot pie.

It would be the sweetest thing if he had someone...hey, I hear Karen might be available soon (wishful thinking?) Well done, as usual. And I admire how economical with words you are...not my forte, that's for sure!

Author's Response:

I know you love Toby - knew you'd be a sucker for lonely Toby! As am I. We do need to get him a date and an exotic looker like Karen might be just the ticket! I like being limited to 100 words - it's like you've said before about knowing when a fic is just DONE. A deadline or a word limit -either way works! My feeling is that you always use just the exact right amount of words.

Very Creed. The lines about his brother are sad and creepy all at once...you've nailed how disaffected he is. I don't know if I want to laugh or cry or just shake my head and say, what the hell?

Author's Response: He may be disaffected, but somehow he remembers where to find the free food. A man after my own heart!

Instead, he continues to crave complications - exactly, but it's gotten too complicated, too many obstacles...when it could be as simple as  saying what they really felt. Just the two (NOT three) of them. Oh, don't get me started!

It really was the two of them against the insanity. Karen is v. nice (much as I feel I even know her), but she doesn't seem likely to own the insanity the way Pam and Jim did, and to find the life in it. Too many straight, simple lines, as you say.

Luckily, I do think Karen is clued in enough to see the wires before she trips too badly...and to know that no one needs to eat that many jellybeans.

Well said, xoxox. Please, m'am...could you make some more?

Author's Response:

EXACTLY Colette.  It'd be sooooo easy if they'd just talk for God's sake.  I mean she couldn't stand a day not talking to him once upon a time.  How did she manage MONTHS???

Pam's ingenuity is her best weapon at this point.  Jim loves all the things about her - and knew enough to go after her (IMO) even after she said no on CN - knowing she was just chicken.  He's too hurt to see it now but if he takes a minute he might see the light.

I do think Karen will figure it out...unless as I believe in my dream world - Jim spills his guts at Cooper's and now she knows so she's going to team up with Jim to help him get Pam back.

Yeah.  I know.  But I still believe in Santa too. :)

Perfect progression...love how she concluded he would do. Which builds up to the real deal...Because he’s everything. Very effective in so few words. The last one is nice and sexy too, and very them. Love that she's laughing - and what he says about it. Wonderful.

He can do whatever he wants, because they’re friends and they’ll always be friends. Words bounce back and forth against his skull until they turn into sounds without meaning

I'd say that pretty much nails it. As usual, this was a beautiful thing - efficiently goes right to the heart of it, but poetic too. Fantastic last line.

I liked the progression of this - you captured the excitement, insecurity and advance/retreat of what a new relationship would be like for these two. Registering is a great device to highlight that.  You even had me worried whether they'd keep on in the 4th part and then relieved in the final one. Great last line too. Well done!

You know, I just re-read these, and only now did it dawn on me that these weren't all about Jim and Pam (finally looked at your character list.) Makes more sense and boy, do I feel stupid. Oh well. Still really liked it...and the qualities I mentioned last review still come through.  I guess this is what happens when you review half-awake!

Author's Response: Aw, no worries, Colette. I once said two and two made five when I was really tired, so I have you beat. So glad you liked it! And glad you liked the last line.

I like the directness of Pam writing a list - actually seems like something she might do. Melancholy and wistful...but I like that even after she sees him with Karen, she remains a bit hopeful. I hope we see something parallel to that in the show.

You're like a stealth poster! Well, yum. Sexy, fed-up, angry Jim. You must explore this further...I command you to write more chapters. (Okay, so I have no actual power, but you get the idea.)

Would love to see what you'd do with an actual drabble - always interesting to see what writers do when working 'against type.' I actually did a Thanksgiving one and found it challenging, frustrating and oddly satisfying. Meanwhile, this was a great - relatively brief - treat!

Author's Response:

Sexy, angry, fed-up Jim indeed - just how we like him.  :o)

I hadn't intended to explore this further, but I've had several reviews/comments suggesting that I should - so I probably will.  You know I have a hard time just shutting the hell up anyway.  :o)

Wait, you wrote something new?  How'd that slip past me?  Even in my craziest times, I always stop and read what you write - I'll have to check it out!

How hot is that combination? And I could so see Jim being that way.

smooth but not slick; charming but not disingenuous; so obviously a “good” guy but far from boring.

Yup, that's our boy. Well put. The way she likes watching him to simple things (pack boxes), notices how unaffected he is from hisll gestures...how could she not fall for him? Makes your beginning section all the sadder...because his one flaw is he's in love with someone else. Thanks for filling in some of Karen's blanks. Very insightful.

I think you've touched on something very true here: sleeping - I mean actually sleeping - with someone can be even more intimate than sex. (In fact, in a recent JAM fic I wrote, I have a passage about that very idea.) It's a nice thing to think about in terms of these two, and how close they'd be. Very sweet.

This was SO well done. I'm not a Karen/Jim fan (to say the least), yet I was totally absorbed.

Something to make it so it's just him and her and no one else around the edges, so that her green eyes would be the only ones he sees when he closes his own.

What an insanely good line. As was the last one of the story. The tone of this was simultaneously incredibly sexy, melancholy, hopeful and very believable. Please write more!

Author's Response: Thanks! A lot of times in my own writing I worry about flying off the handle with my language, and I liked writing this a lot because I could write lines like that, and not have them seem out of place. Plus, one of my favorite things I've ever heard anyone say to anyone else when they were in love was something like, "I just want to create this tiny little world where it's just you and me and nobody else."

Okay. This was one of the most poignant, (potentially) truest fics ever. There were so many small moments - Jan's recognition of Michael's optimism; Jim's memory of how oblivious he'd been just that morning of the turn his life was about to take; that she tasted like ashes...and especially, the final line. Just beautifully, painfully done. So good.
