“Say it again,” he whispered.
Oh, I like that. That seems precisely right. Enjoying this so far!
Author's Response: Thanks, nqllisi! That's one of my favorite lines as I imagine that Jim would want to hear Pam say that again and again.
Date: January 28, 2010 Title: Chapter 3: S4 - "Fever"
Beautiful work, tying the story to the lyrics. Nice, soft comedic touch with the last vignette.
Author's Response: I love these songs a lot and love Jim and Pam just as much so it was natural to combine the two. The bonus is having readers like you who enjoyed it as well :o)

Lovely. I enjoyed this look at their journey.
Author's Response: Awww, thanks once again for the lovely review, nqllisi!

Very cute! I like this pairing. One formatting note- your story is smashed up into your Story Notes, so it is really hard to see where it starts. I always try to put some lines in between, and maybe repeat the story title in bold, to avoid that problem. Nice job with the actual writing, though!
Author's Response: Thank you for reading and reviewing!
Also, thank you for telling me about that problem. I tried to fix it, but I guess that didn't work.

My baby is almost 2 but I vividly remember that late-pregnancy feeing of complete weariness. I think that is how God planned it- make the end of pregnancy so unbearable you totally get over the fear of labor and parenthood in an intense desire to just Get that Baby Out. Heh.
And of course, Jim is perfect. Lovely job.
Author's Response: Very true about the end of pregnancy - I was three weeks late with my first and at that point I didn't care what happened, just as long as I didn't have to be pregnant anymore. Thanks so much for the read and review, nqllisi!

Not boring. I love, love, loooove your Jim narrator voice. I think I can capture his dialog sometimes, but his interior voice eludes me, so I am doubly impressed here. Very, very nice start. More now please!
Author's Response: Oh, thanks nqllisi. =) Plan to update really soon. Thanks for reading!
Date: February 09, 2010 Title: Chapter 5: Chapter 5
Oh, see, this is a perfect way to end it. The thing about them is that as normal and nice as they are, their situation was complicated. It really was. So in order to be true to them, even in an AU, it just can never be simple. You capture that haunted, tired, desperate Jim (from the Roy days and the Karen days) just beautifully. Gorgeous, gorgeous.
Author's Response: Thank you, I'm glad that you enjoyed the ending. :) It totally was a complicated situation. Really, there are probably a good number of people who would not do the same things that Jim and Pam did in real life to get each other -- Casino Night, coal walk -- and although sometimes I write them getting together without these big leaps and bounds, sometimes you just have to. It's true to their characters and situations to have something big shake their foundations.
He shivers because there’s no warmth in the light and he’s not slept, not really, for a couple of nights. He’s edgy and exhausted all at once, flat and hyper. A dozen other contradictions.

I am so glad I stopped by MTT tonight. This is amazing. It is raw and powerful and tense and real- almost certainly the best treatment of the time before Jim left that I've read, and heaven knows I've read a lot. The voices are all completely in tune, the characterizations are spot on, and your prose sings. Simply beautiful.
Author's Response: Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the story and really appreciate your kind words. :)

Wow. I just got totally sucked into this, so much so that I didn't review the individual chapters (sorry for that). Having just lived through the snowpacalypse, I had no trouble imagining the scene whatsoever (and snow IS heavy), but you really showed skill in building the tension and panic and urgency of the situation. I look forward to the rest!
Oh, and one last comment. You describe how Pam disappears into herself during her contractions- that was just beautifully pu. I remember feeling that way while I was in labor. Excellent detail.
Author's Response: Sorry I am late in responding to this - the email response thingy doesn't work anymore. I'm so glad you enjoyed this, and especially that you found Pam's reaction to her contractions believable. Thanks for your comments about the tension - I'm trying to work on improving pacing in my stuff, so it was fun to hear I might have gotten it right. I appreciate your reading and taking the time to review, nqllisi. (BTW, I love your stories - read them all - please write more)
Date: March 02, 2010 Title: Chapter 4: Chapter 4 Birth Control
That was intense! You do a good job of conveying the details without being gory, which I think would be a challenge. I particularly like how detached Pam is from Jim's panic- I would imagine that actually made it worse for him, because they are normally so in sync. Great job! Again!
Author's Response: Thanks, nqllisi! I didn't want to make it too yucky, but on the other hand, if I didn't include details it wouldn't have been Jim's experience. Appreciate your read and review!
This one is kind of stupid and contrived, yes, but still. Had to get it out of my system.

Your use of details is always so well-balanced- enough to make the scene come alive without over-burdening us with stuff we don't care about.
Oddly, perhaps, my favorite line is this: Vestiges of the tracks from Roy’s truck are still visible, heading straight past it.
Roy is gone, has abandoned her as usual, but he's left his mark, just as he had in some way in every J/P scene in season 2. He was always a factor. I like revisiting the angsty time, don't you? I can't wait to see where you go with this.
Author's Response: Yep, Roy was indeed always a factor...or an excuse...or sometimes just a lunkhead ;-) And yeah, it's fun (is 'fun' the word?) to go back to the wellspring of S2 once in a while. Thanks for this, nqllisi!
Date: February 24, 2010 Title: Chapter 2: We already know how this movie ends
Oh, Pam. Her little rebellion, indeed- pasta, art club, and inviting other men over for date night. I loved exploring Pam's messed-up head during this time- she knew and at the same time totally and completely did not know what she was doing. Ialso love how this is sort of foreshadowing- because they do, certainly, have that easy domesticity, that casual carnality between them in the here-and-now. Another fabulous installment.
Author's Response: I agree - she was never quite as oblivious as she appeared. Denial is funny that way...And Jim was so pained to detect where she was in the spectrum of awareness, at any given moment. Pleased if that sense came across here...and I love that phrase: 'casual carnality.' Perfect - I may have to steal that ;-) Thanks so much, nqillisi!

Wow. Just...wow. That was horrible. I mean that in the most complimentary way!! You got that horrible, gut-churning, tense, sick feeling down just right. Pam's mix of uncertain joy and angsty panic feels amazingly real, and that ending...killer. I sort of miss those angsty days, don't you? If nothing else, they were awesome fodder for fic. Love this.

This made me cry. My baby girl turns 2 next week, and it is just like this. That utter absorption, that total love that hides a tiny blade of resentment, that yearning to figure out how the person that is "you" and the person that is "mommy" co-exist in your now-stretchmarked skin. I love this to pieces, I truly do.

What would happen if Pam's courage from Beach Games sprouted a little bit earlier? Say... at Phyllis' wedding?

OK, I just FLEW through these five chapters and now I'm just heartbroken that there isn't more...it is lovely. I love how one small change could really have changed everything (and, ultimately, nothing, because they both had to take their journeys to the same place). Your phrasing and pacing are really nice, and I particularly like your internal voice for Pam. This is a wonderful piece.
Author's Response: It's true; one change in a single event could shift everything into a different pacing, which is what I'm hoping to see in this fic. But at the same time, like you said, it changes nothing REALLY, because it is all leading up to the same place - they're just taking a different route here. Thank you so much for reviewing! And I'll try to get the next update up by the end of the week!
Date: March 23, 2010 Title: Chapter 6: Chapter 6
I loooove the role reversal here, with Jim the one playing with fire and Pam in quiet pursuit. Love this non-date!
Author's Response: I'm having fun with the role reversal, honestly. And one of my favorite parts is that since both are kind of set in their ways - Jim is used to trying to go forward and Pam typically tip-toes the line between friendship and romance - that it makes the role reversal that much more confusing for them. Pam is used to holding back, so she's got to consciously make strides to get closer to him. Jim is used to trying to reach Pam, but now he's thinking about Karen and the consequences of thinking Pam likes him - will he be hurt again by Pam? How badly would that hurt Karen?
Ah, I love these two. So full of misery and complication. I miss season 3. :(
Inspired by Niagara but set a little closer to the once upon a time than the happily ever after.

This is simply beautiful. Because we know Karen was OK, really, and that she and Pam could have been friends if they didn't have one particular thing in common, and that Pam is kind (and so is Erin). Lovely, lovely.
