Loving this oh-so much, Kerber! I love the balance of humor and romance in this chapter, and each chapter just gets better and better! I'm really anxious to see how you lead up to and arrive at your big ILU crescendo, but watching this story blossom and unfold has been a delightful treat. I'm so happy to be involved with this wonderful story. Can't wait for more! -CH

Author's Response: Chica -- you have been my biggest cheerleader and greatest beta with this story and I appreciate it more than you know.  I'm really glad that the story doesn't disappoint and I can't wait to finish the big reveal :)

xoxoxo--Okay. So lately, I've been very jaded with the state of fic. The updates page has been barren, and all the old fic-friends and familiar faces seemed to have flown the coop in the last gasps of the WGA strike. I was sad, bummed, afraid we had lost all that we'd had in the glory days before "The Office" left for too many weeks.

Until today.

xoxoxo, your story literally revitalizes my faith in fic. You've recognized our favorite characters and brought life to all that we love about them with a fresh story concept that is truly innovative and intriguing. Of course I shouldn't be surprised by your graceful handling of Jim and Pam's dialogue; you're one of the best we have on MTT, my friend, and I'm really so happy to see that you're writing again. You've done a brilliant job capturing the tension of those post-Casino Night moments, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next.

Again, brilliant work here, and thank you for writing this story! --Best, CH

Author's Response:

Wow, CH.  Did not expect that. [/Pam].   Thank you so much for you comments.  I am happy to know that you enjoyed my little story.  I'm hopeful the next chapter does not disappoint.

xoxoxo--I'm so happy to see this is back, and I'm even happier that it looks like it'll be a long one! You've set up a fabulous premise here, and I love the twist on Michael and Jim's talk from "The Convention." Can't wait to see what happens next, of course, and keep up the fabulous work!! -CH

Author's Response: CH - Thank you!!  Not too long actually.  (twss) 3 chapters should do it.  I realized I had to put a little Jim POV in there thus the struggle w/Chapter 2.  I'm hurrying!!

If it goes down like this on the show, I'll love it. Angst and possible breakup drama and all. I just love the way you write, lady. SO good. This part especially got me...

And they’re in her bedroom, quietly undressing on opposite sides of the room. Some nights they undress each other. Some nights they can’t even remember how they got undressed. And some nights they just undress themselves and it’s those nights that really thrill her. Because it’s habit, it’s comfort. She can stand in her bra and underwear and talk to him about plans for the weekend without her skin flushing and without her hands shaking. He can stand there in his boxers and she might not even think about his skin. But she does and she knows he’s thinking about hers.

Watch as Jim and Pam deal with being in the public eye and under the thumb of manipulative network producers. The story is told through interviews, transcripts, web pages and photos.

HOLY CRAP.

So, Mel, you know I've been spazzing about that shit test I had today (which went great, BTW), and you know that I've been desperate for a new fic to sink my teeth into. But you? What do you do? You make up for the spazzing with a story that's as smooth as butter, and then you give me a story to obsess about for the next few weeks. Win-win. You better update soon, or I'll use my telekinetic powers to have your students leave thumbtacks in your desk chair everyday till the end of the year.

WONDERFUL work, and as always, you prove that you're the master of reality-reality. Cannot WAIT for more, my friend!! -CH

Author's Response: First of all...congrats on acing the shit test.  I know that as a writer of shit tests myself I should be rooting for the other team, but I'm glad that you pwned it.  Thanks also for your review.  I'm really looking forward to writing this story.  I got bogged down with my last two stories because I think I started talking myself out of them.  I don't write imagery very well and there are some beautiful stories here on MTT (yours included) and I think I started to psych myself out.  I do, though, think I tell pretty good stories and I'm okay with that.  This is a story I want to tell and it means so much to me to get a review from you.  So, thanks!!!!

Damn you, Mel. You are the world's biggest bitch. I go on and on about how I have an exam to study for, papers to write, things to memorize, and you choose TONIGHT to update this story, knowing it has a gravitational pull on my soul. As soon as I saw the update, I was helpless, and I devoured the whole thing like chocolate covered cherries (NOTE: I do not really think you're a bitch or damnable, obviously).

I just love this story. There's such a unique element of creativity to it (no surprise since you're the author), and I am having such fun watching it unfold. That being said, I can't wait to see what you're building up to. Obviously our boy is gonna get his act together and come out with his feelings, and I just can't wait to see it all go down.

I especially enjoyed this: Jim spent a lot of time thinking about Roy and trying to decide if the guy was really an insensitive jerk, or just a well-intentioned guy who wasn’t aware of the effects of his words and the things he did or didn’t do. It would be easy to see him as a caricature of the villain on a Lifetime movie, but, as he told himself over and over again…Pam saw something worth loving in him despite all of his flaws. Though Roy sometimes made his blood boil, it was for that reason that he usually bit his tongue and let Pam handle things just as she was at that moment.

It's too easy to paint Roy as a villain, and I like how you avoid it with such stealthy skill. Well done, and as always, can't wait for more!! --CH

Author's Response: I'm evil, aren't I. I knew you were studying and yet I updated providing you a reason to procrastinate. I'm a horrible, horrible person and an underhandedly evil teacher.  So glad you liked this and that you liked my little bit of Roy. I know we've talked before in reviews about him, but I really do have a soft spot for the big lug. My inspiration? Your portrayal of him in both your class reunion fic and All-Inclusive.  Thanks so much for your review...now go study (and ignore the new chapter I just put up).

Mel--You've written many lovely things, and you know how I feel about your catalogue of stories. I love them all for very different reasons, and the resonance of your writing is breathtaking. This, however...this takes it all to a whole new level. This chapter broke my heart, but not for Jim and the fear he thinks he's wrong for Pam. Your dead-on characterization of Roy was humbling, incredible, wonderful, and awesome. There's this fumbled frustration about the character that was always fun to see in small doses on the show, but fic gives us the chance to flesh that out and dig into his character in new ways. Few writers write him so brilliantly, but you're on that short list, and in my book, you're at the top of it. I adored his characterization here, and I think this is the best chapter yet. Keep it up! --CH, member of the Team Roy (Just-Not-For-Pam) Fan Club

Author's Response:

CH—As always, I feel so humbled reading one of your reviews and if you look below, you’ll see how unsure I was about this chapter. I kept bugging people around me to tell me that it sounded okay and I finally just had to let it go.

I know we’ve talked about this in reviews before, but I’ll say it again. I have an extremely soft spot for Roy…one I don’t have for Lee from the British series. I guess that I’ll admit something here…I had a Roy in my life…well sort of. It was all very unrequited in a total Jim and Pam sort of way. Except that I was in the Jim position. He was a big guy…football player…prone to dark, dark moods and we were friends…when he wasn’t hanging out with his buddies, that is. Nobody could understand why I’d want to spend time with him when his greatest achievement was constructing a giant beerymid (out of cans) the weekend his parents left him alone. I saw something beneath all of that…something worth loving and that’s what I always base my Pam and Roy dynamic on. Now that I’ve shared entirely too much, let me just thank you once again for your lovely review. Thanks so very much.

Thanks so much, CH.  Those were Swedge's.  I have to say my Meredith and Jim entries were particularly lame, so it was essential to have Swedge co-write. :)  I loved the Meredith one in particular -- that dark twist!  I know some people complain that Meredith is one-note on the show (or rather, two-note -- the alcoholic and the tramp), but I get a real kick out of her.

This little exchange in particular struck a chord with me:

"I don't want to get Roy," she whispers, surprised she's said it at all.

"Then don't."

Something about the naked honesty in those simple words just really pushes this story to the next level; I love that they're being so honest with each other in their cute passive-aggressive way.

Ohh, I liked this, bebitched. While you skewered my soul by making those jabs at Kelly (my favorite of favorite characters, as you know), you staged a coup on my heart by making me cheer on Karen and Ryan. I've been hoping he'll get back with Kelly, but it was really fun to see him with Karen in this one. I think you do a masterful thing in writing such detail in so few words; it's a talent I wish I had, and the poetry of this piece is a testament of your talent. Part of me wonders if there's this quiet subtext that saying "She's fucking nuts" was his version of Jim's "Yes" in "The Return," but I love the quietness and thought involved in this story--both from your work as the writer and the wondering questions you left me as the reader. Well done! -CH

WHOA.

Where the HELL did this come from!? I've known from the start that you were a good storyteller; your earlier stories on the site immediately made me think, "Okay, this, THIS is a newbie I can get behind," but now? NOW you bust out something like this! Of course it's not that I'm surprised--your other pieces have been beautiful, too, but this is....I don't know. I really, really like this. An insane amount of liking is going on right now at Casa de CH. (So much so that I'm favoriting this story, and I NEVER favorite stories.) Your focus and attention to detail, and the subtle theme of the colors (or lack thereof--the use of the grayscale touches so many things for them: grey newsprint smeared on fingertips, white paper, black memories--GUH) really packed a punch with this story. I also love the small details, from the Pam's Harry-Potter-specs (well, maybe not like that, but still--those are somethin', aren't they?) to phrases like the light of their future and the dark of the past.

And this?

She knows from experience what this feels like and she wishes he’d take a chance on something other than her. In addition to her. She knows he wants to ask her, has seen the question in his eyes a million times before. Those are the moments that terrify her because it’s then that she knows she can’t be all of him. She can’t be all of him because then there’s nothing left for her but suffocating blackness.

That, THAT sums up everything I've been trying to say about this idea of them getting engaged. They're ready in that they love each other, and they know that they want that future together, but at the same time, there's something incomplete on the personal level that just has to be taken care of. To me, you have PERFECTLY summed up those ideas I've had that I just couldn't articulate. So thanks for this.

I've loved your writing from day one, my friend, but this just started a whole new ballgame, IMO. Well done, bravo, here's a Dundie, tkae a diet coke, and do a victory lap. --CH

Author's Response: Holy crap, CH. (Also, I now think I\'ve said that to you more times than I\'ve said anything else ever.) This is like freaking awesome. See--you\'ve reduced me to sounding like this. \r\n\r\nI mean, almost all that I love in life I can find right here: Jim and Pam, Harry Potter, a Dundie, diet coke! This is my victory lap, my friend, and I feel accomplished. \r\n\r\nNo, but seriously, your words mean so much to me. I too am glad we\'ve become friends outside of MTT and I value your input and judgment. \r\n\r\nI\'ve spent a lot of time thinking about this Jim/Pam engagement extravaganza. I\'ll be the first to admit that I\'ve gone back and forth and back again on what I think will happen. I want her to say yes, of course, I\'m like dying for her to say yes and for them to ride off into the sunset together...but something about that strikes me as inorganic. I mean yes, eventually it will happen, because they are real people who fought long and hard to get to each other and it\'s a natural next step, eventually. But I think her \'yes\' is going to come with a \'but\' or an appendix or a \'*see reverse side for side-effects\'...just something. If I\'m wrong I will happily eat my words, but I think you\'re right when you say that there\'s something incomplete on a personal level that needs to be dealt with. \r\n\r\nThanks so much, again, for your kind words. I truly appreciate them!

This is lovely, callisto! I'm really enjoying it, and the way you tied in and expanded the last episode was a real treat. Keep it up! -CH

This was lovely, my friend! I really like how you balanced out the time after they started dating, and the confrontation with ol' Karen was well-handled. This was a great distraction from writing my paper, so thanks for that. Bravo! -CH

Author's Response: Thank you, dear. Anything I can do to distract you from the important things. ;)\r\n-Chels
