Azlin, I really am enjoying this story so far.Call me crazy, but I can get enough of some old school S2/S3-ish angst. :D Your dialogue rings true to my ears, and I like the various emotional stages Pam is going through, and Jim's willingness to listen. (As a guy who's been on the receiving end of an evening of talking like this, I can testify that Jim's a brave man. :D)

Look forward to more!

Author's Response: Every so often you need a little angst. I'm glad the dialogue sounds right. I'm a little worried about it in the third chapter. They do a lot of talking and some of it I'm not totally convinced is in character, but I figure we're all allowed to bend characterizations every now and then, right? It's like poetic license. Or something... Anyway, thanks for the review! I hope you like the ending.

I've got a real soft spot for Kelly!fic, and this one was just great. It was funny in all the right places, such as the first thing she notices about Ryan is the fact that orange isn't his color, and yet you manage to keep the Kelly-ness from going over the top. That's not easy to do, either. (I have a really hard time writing Kelly, so I'm impressed!). I like that you ended on an honest and poignant moment as well. Ryan's a tool, yeah, but I don't think he's pure evil. :D

Great job!

Author's Response: Mose!  It's nice to hear from you!  I really struggled with this story.  I agree that Kelly is tough to write and it's easy to go over the top with her, and so I'm glad to hear you feel I got it right.  And yeah, Ryan isn't pure evil, and so I'm glad I got that across as well, lol.  Thanks for reading and reviewing :)

Great idea for a fic, Emily. That website always gives me chills whenever I look at it, and I find that I can't read it for very long without feeling too much like I'm prying somewhere I'm not supposed to be.

Should be very interesting to see where you go with all this.

Author's Response:

I'm really excited about this idea, so glad others are enjoying it!

So I read this story just now as it was in the submission queue, and I've gotta say: I'm really impressed! I love stories like this that play with convention a little bit and use a format we haven't seen before.

Needless to say, I'm very interested to see where to take this. Well done, and congratulations on your first fic!

Author's Response: You don\'t know that I spent a good deal of time yesterday trying to look you up to see if you wanted to beta this for me and help me with formatting. I went to your LJ and everything, but once I\'d worked up the nerve to email you, the server went kaput and anyway- I figured things out late last night. I\'ve got about 5 chapters of this written, if you\'re interested I\'d be honored if you\'d beta for me. Even if you don\'t- thanks so much for the encouragment!

Of all the "What happened to Karen?" stories I've read, I think I like this one the best. And I think it's because you don't vilify and demonize Karen as though she "had it coming," and you don't deify her to the point that the rest of her life becomes a crusade to overcome the evil force of Jim Halpert. (I've read both kinds, and dislike both kinds)

Instead, you've chosen a much more realistic route, and it's really ringing true with me. Good job.

Way to take a torturous scene and turn it on its ear, Kev! I love the turn of phrase at the very end especially. The Merger is one of the few Office episodes that I just can't watch because it's like watching a car wreck in slow motion. So this scenario is healthier for me to imagine. :D

Author's Response:

That scene was so painful to watch, especially the first time.  I think I rewound it and watched it a few times (getting more and more agitated, probably) trying to find something hopeful, but to little avail, really.  And if The Merger is a train wreck (which I think is apt), then the PLoD scene is where you see bodies crunching together.  And not in a good way. :(

I like my way sooooo much better.

I enjoyed using that same phrase for a different person, too.  It makes sense.  Jim's Jim, and he's going to use the same sorts of words for the same sorts of circumstances.  But for those of us who disliked Season 3's triangle of stupidity, it's a nice little... I don't know... revenge?  compensation?...  something like that, that Jim is using the same words here to avoid the triangle that he used to ward off Pam in The Merger.

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, Cousin Mose!  And this story actually was "new." :)

While I will never agree with Greg Daniels that Pam was at DM first (I'm sorry...Jim was there first. Period. :D), I think you've done a really great job with showing just how many of their little quirks were there from the beginning. I'm thinking specifically of the use of "Beesly" and "Halpert" in their banter here, but there were lots of of other little things as well.

Great job!

Author's Response: I just can\'t see Jim staying at that job for very long without Pam there. I always figured she was the reason he never went out and got a better job, because he totally could have. And that was even before we got the backstory in Launch Party. I\'d be interested to hear your take on it, though. I know I have my own personal cannon and it bothers me when the writers or the show punch holes in it. But anyway, thank you so much for your feedback! It is much appreciated.

I love stories like this, a character alone at the end of the day, full of introspection and thought. And I really like that you've taken on Holly here and given us a glimpse into what might have been going through her head. Since we know virtually nothing about her, I'd say your interpretation is as valid as anyone's, and certainly feels plausible to me.

Nicely done!

Author's Response: I'm glad that you like stories like this Cousin Mose. They are exactly the type of stories that I tend to write. It's definitely fun trying to create a back story for a character whom we know practically nothing about, and I'm glad that you found it plausible. Thank you for taking the time to review, I know that this kind of story usually does not garner them.

Seriously, though, I really am enjoying the tone of this piece. I like the first person narrative you've got going, and the alternating  POVs of Jim and Pam. i think you've got a really good grasp on the characters, and it's really refreshing to read something so nicely crafted. Good job, and can't wait for more!

Reviewer: Cousin Mose Signed 9

This chapter is really excellent, but two specific parts really resonated with me.

The first is the moment there at the beginning when she slips on Jim hoodie. The way you describe the tactile nature of that moment for Pam was excellent. (It reminded me of something sort of similar I wrote in one of my early stories where Jim goes to Pam's apartment for the first time and muses internally about the different sights and smells. /Mose story hour). So yeah, that was a great moment.

The other part that really stood out was this passage right here:

Because of me, Jim has thrown his entire life into a tailspin. He’s back at a job he can’t stand, and I’m assuming broken up from a girlfriend that he’d been happy with. I can’t feel good about that, no matter how much I want to be with him.

That's about the best perspective I've ever read on what Pam may have been thinking and feeling about all this.

Keep up the good work! We're lucky to have you as part of our little community here.

Author's Response: Well thank you, Mose! On your two notes...I\'ve always found that there\'s something really intimate in borrowing/wearing a boyfriend\'s clothes for the first time...and in the Jim/Pam dynamic at that point in their history, it really would have been physically the closest they\'d ever been. And as for the \"tail spin\" line...I think it\'s in Pam\'s nature that she would feel that guilt even while being happy. I guess I thought it reflected her growth in acknowledging HIS. I\'m too happy to be a part of the MTT madness! :)

shoutoutout, I'm so glad I decided to give this a shot. I'm a huge Dwangela sort of a guy (Jim who? Pam who? :P), and I am still holding out hope that the writers will get it right with those two next season.

Some seriously beautiful writing here, some brilliant insight and introspection into Angela's inner world, and I think you've done a fantastic job conveying the angst and inner turmoil she's been feeling lo these many years now. :D

And, even though it's off season, I like your usage of the 4th as a center point for this story. Here's hoping Angela will stage her own revolution from Andy and find freedom with Dwight.

Great work!

2. I've always wanted to write a "Jim and Pam get a dog" story, and now I don't have to, since this one is so great. Fun, quirky, a little bit poignant... you've hit the trifecta here.

3. Elvis looks a little bit like a Beagle to me. (And THERE'S a sentence I never thought I'd ever type. :D :D)

4. Excellent work, my friend.

Author's Response: 1. It can be very confusing with two different usernames. Mostly I picked ktface3 on FF.net cause I was totally unaware how into this whole fanfiction scene I\'d get, otherwise I\'d probably be Dundie All-Star there as well. And my LJ username is from years ago, so there\'s no changing that. But I\'m glad that now, you know the rest of the story. 2. Please feel free to write about them actually getting the dog. Sadly, I have never owned a dog (my parents were cat people), so I would have no experience to base the trials of house-training on. Bugging my boyfriend while he\'s playing video games though, I have much experience in. ;) 3. I assure you, Elvis is a basset hound. Google image search says so. :D 4. Thank you!! Absolutely spot on characterizations here. I love that you chose to focus on a good mixture of characters here, and--even though I may be in the minority here--I'm glad that none of them were Jim and Pam. Holy Cow.

I had no idea that I needed to imagine nunchucks made from two live bears chained together until now. And I can honestly say, without any reservation whatsoever, that my world has meaning. :D

So many things to love about this idea, too many, in fact, to name--because it'd just be recopying and pasting the entire story--so i'll try and limit myself to just a few standouts.

Ursine nunchucks aside, can we discuss the sheer brlliance of "Der Kommisar" for a moment? It's the absolute perfect choice, as it satisfies a number of requirements for comedy: It's perfect on one level, for Dwight's comic book hero, it's an Andy-ish song all the way, and it's just dorky enough to still be cool after all these years.

And, call me juvenile, but the absolute winning moment for me was Kevin's visual suggestion for Pam's drawing. It's a tiny moment, yes, but one that killed me.

You two knocked this out of the park. Well done, my friends.

Author's Response: LC: Thanks, Mose...you know, bear-chucks are the kind of magic only Jack can provide. He\'s truly something. :) We are definitely bringing back Der Kommissar, so stay tuned, and as for the Kevin line? I can humbly say I\'m proud to have killed you. :) Thank you as always, pal - we appreciate it!

Nicely done, larry. You've got a knack for hitting the mark with these incisive little fics. Excellent job!
