I loved this!! It's just so realistic - how it gradually degrades from seeing each other all the time, to never. That's how it alwasy goes, with even the best of intentions. Mark's speech was great, also felt so real. Awesome how they make up at the end. Well done!!

About the time Jim said "your fingers" I got all misty and barely breathed until the end. Lovely juxtaposition of them both being so content in the simplicity of waking together and then Jim's grief, bitterness, and struggle to continue. Beautifully tragic. Well done!

This story?...as perfect as Jim and Pam. Love their banter, "we're not aweful" especially, and his mental list was just too funny. Adore the ending!!!

Love this, even though it's dark...

We couldn’t go back to being friends. We were never really friends to begin with. There was always something else beneath that veneer. And I knew it was all or nothing for us.

It should never have been a question in the first place is the problem. That’s why I couldn’t answer her then.

Love those lines. It feels a little noir-ish and I think its amazing.

Summary: Pam lies awake at night. What's going through her head?

It had always amused me that apparently the DM receptionists talk to each other about gossip (courtesy of Branch Wars) and I wanted to explore that. Also, apparently Rolando is flaming gay in my head, so... there's that.

You just do NOT know how much I LOVE this. NOt only is it the fluff that we all wanted to happen, but it is wonderfully written. In such a brief space you've got the humor, the awkward, the hurt and the hope. Rather clever of you to turn that last sentence against Karen.

Author's Response:

Wow!  Thanks so much, iheartcreed!  iheartyourreview. :)  (I heart Creed, too.  What a great character.)

I really appreciate the compliment of the writing.  Before a bit over a year ago, I don't recall ever writing fiction, even in school (which was many years ago).  I'm sort of amazed I can do this at all, so to get complimented on it is a really nice thing.

I thought the last bit was sort of a perfect use of that sentence.  I didn't like the use of that sentence on the actual show.  That was a real "hit me in the grief bone" sentence.  And really, Pam's actual reply to Jim in the episode, "What do you mean?"  C'mon, girl.  He's giving you a chance here and you're being kind of cold!

Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, iheartcreed!  I really appreciate it. :)

Summary:

This will be a series of self-contained chapters (oneshots) exploring various "what ifs" pertaining to episodes spanning seasons one through three. Each chapter will examine how things would've gone differently if either Jim or Pam had responded to a given situation the way that (most) fans had wanted or almost expected them to.

For example, the first chapter focuses on how things would've happened differently if Jim had confessed during those twenty-seven seconds of silence on the booze cruise when we were all holding our breath and hoping he would.

Among the other chapters I have mapped out: What if all the reminders of Jim in "Gay Witch Hunt" had provoked not a small, sad smile from Pam at the end of the episode, but rather, had motivated her to take action -- drive to Stamford to see him for the first time in four months? Or what if Jim had responded to Pam's text in "Diwali" via a post-Jagermeister phone call? What if Jim had walked in on Pam crying at the end of "Back From Vacation"? (...You get the idea.)

Again, though, each chapter will be confined to an episode, so it will essentially be a series of oneshots that are unrelated to each other.

I really like this. I love how you establish the dynamic between the two. In my mind it was always Jim coming in awkward, yet forward, getting the job done. But I like this scenario better. Pam's being forward enough to give him hope, not being shy. I also think you did a good job of getting inside Jim's head. I love how you emphasize that he's usually smoother, but there's something about Pam, a regular woman, that is just so irregular to him.

This was really nice. I especially like how you chose to portray Karen here. Not bad for Jim, not forcing him to be what he isn't, not a lifesaver that strangles him on the way up but a light. I also like that it a long time and a light for Karen, when all he needed from Pam was a dim silhouette. Again, great job!!

Author's Response: I never saw Karen as someone holding Jim back, I think Jim was holding himself back (although he had good reasons to). I think Karen really was a light, and she could have helped him, but Jim wasn't ready. But all he needed was a tiny signal from Pam, and he was ready again. Thanks for your kind review iheartcreed!

No need to feel bad about posting this little golden nugget!! As the others have said, I love the structure. I like that here it's not that Pam is just ignoring everything, but that she's just a step slow. Love that Jim's speeding her up.

Out of curiosity, what is the one line that had you so inspired?

Author's Response: (If this double posts, sorry. Not sure what happened!)\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your review!\r\n\r\nI had the image in my head of Jim trying to be all Modern Man when he reaches for a condom, and Pam being too embarrassed to tell him that it\'s unnecessary. Neither one of them are very good at talking about the hard stuff :)\r\n\r\n....that\'s what she said.

Summary: So, I'm re-watching S3 and hating how many missed opportunities there were. This will be a series of "what-if" alternatives which would have spared us some of the S3 angst.
