Bio:
20-something fangirl; I've only really had two other fandoms (X-Files and House MD) so I tend to be pretty loyal to my 'ships.

Obviously JAM is my number one interest on The Office, but I also enjoy Jim/Katy, Jim/Karen, and Pam/Roy for the insights into Jim and Pam they provide. Kelly/Ryan and Michael/Jan are interesting too- but I really only have time for one main interest on the show, so JAM it is!

Love reading well-written fic (which this site is a treasure trove of) and tend to leave somewhat analytical reviews- a remainder from writing for a literary criticism magazine. I do intend it to be of interest to the author though because from the few fics I've written I enjoyed getting meaty feedback more than 'OMG totes awesome BUT WRITE MOAR!!1!' reviews :)

If I move from writing House!fic to writing JAM!fic, I'll be sure to share it; everyone here is fantastic and I'd love to contribute.

Oh, if anyone is looking for a beta (grammar, flow of the story, character development), ask away!

I use the same username on LJ and Metafilter, I'm on Reddit under occidental_inkling.

Summary:

Roy's thought process after Pam tells him about her kiss with Jim on Casino Night, what leads him to attack Jim at the office.

This was a thorny little story to write. Even though I spent a long time hating Roy's guts I just love to take the unpopular side, and even though there aren't many fics written from Roy's POV, I hope you'll read and like this anyway.

Yup, Roy isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but since he didn't go after Jim the second after Pam told him, there MUST have been some kind of thought process leading up to him attacking Jim in the office. Nice fill-in, and I think your idea of Roy acting out his grief over losing his plans as violence towards Jim is very likely.

Always nice to hear Roy's side; it definitely isn't as simple as Jim = good and Roy = bad.

Summary: Jim goes to many different restaurants.. as told from the point of view of his many waitresses :) A little AU, maybe. But mostly just a fun journey through all of Jim's meals dining out.

It is really hard for me not to make a deafening girly squee right now that you could hear even over the internet!

Um, this is going to be a long comment- feel free to skim.

Most important, you're concentrating on the friendship- I thought that was crucial considering Pam's motivations for going. Love Jim reinforcing it by talking about repairing their friendship first (btw, I loved your 'fractured friendship' phrase; perfect because it wasn't quite broken, but.... yeah, perfect).

Jim's using the Australian slang for Pam's behaviour was cool because it worked for me to show how he could be honest about how he felt to Pam while avoiding calling her blind, ridiculous, or something. I thought other words could have led to an argument, but by using the slang they could concentrate on how he felt- and it was a little humorous to keep things more relaxed.

Jim makes friends pretty easily, it seems, so making a friend like that for a night just seemed so Jim. Oh, and I'm so glad he didn't sleep with her.

Thanks for describing the scene from both points of view- always cool to hear and takes some skill from the writer to get inside both heads without being redundant.

I am so in love with this story- even though the title 'Cardiac Care' right next to your username kind of freaks me out when I see it ;)

Author's Response:

Hi, variella!

First of all, thanks so much for leaving such a detailed review!  It is always helpful to get a sense of "what works" and what doesn't.  I'm glad the Australian slang part worked for you because I have a sense that that particular chapter fell flat for a lot of readers.  It's a bit better now that I've revised it ... but it might get more editing later.

Your last comment had me laughing out loud.  I can't believe I never thought of the irony of the juxtaposition of "Cardiac Care" with "Vampiric Blood."

I'll look forward to constructive feedback from you on future chapters?  Yes?

Thanks again!

This whole story is, like, totally awesome ;)

LOVE the use of the AP students to slide in some 'objective' observations of their behaviour- the way you did it without making it forced or stilted was great.

I read it all so far in one day. Praying I don't have to wait a month inbetween chapters- so I'll sent positive thoughts in the hopes they'll keep your muses going!

Author's Response:

Thank you, variella!  I'm so glad that you thought Naomi's comments weren't stilted or forced.  Really struggled with that.

It won't be a month before the next post!

Not much to do with two sleeping women in their beds.
that's what she said.

He was totally, completely, 95% positive of it.
Now that's a Micheal-ism if I ever heard one. Jim must have caught it.

This is great. For so many reasons. I love your miniscule but important details (i.e. hospital rooms get messy so easily, how it happens is a mystery to me). LOVE that Jim is starting to think outside of his own head now that he is in a new environment. And realizing that expecting Pam to lure him into infidelity was a little unreasonable *eyeroll*

I ♥ this fic.

Author's Response: Thank you, variella!  I'm glad you like my details and the way Jim's character is developing.  It's funny, this story is decidedly different than what I first had in mind, oh almost 2 years ago.  Geez, I can't believe I am so slow.  But I think the way the story has developed is much stronger than what I originally had in mind.  Less soap opera-ish.  So thanks for sticking with me!

Looks like I'm not the only one who clicked because of the title :)

I signed up just to leave a review (only reason I leave a 9 instead of a 10 is that there are a few word and phrase choices that I think could be polished)- the theme of the story is the kind that is easy to write bad fic about- the theme itself is emotionally charged enough that people can coast on it. You didn't do that at all, I think you handed it beautifully.

The title fits perfectly... not sure what else to say except this broke my fanfic reading little heart, and the ending mended it without overshadowing everything important that came before.

loved it.

This made me laugh- I begged my parents to name my little sister after me when she was born and was furious when the wouldn't!

FWIW, if my husband was away and asked to speak to the child without saying anything to me first, he'd be in trouble when the phone got handed back to me! But maybe that just got left out... ;)

I like it so far- I'm thinking you probably want constructive criticism, so my comment is that I like (really like) your plot, the way you're writing Jim and Pam, and the opportunity you've got with them being separated; SO much story material there. It's far less detailed than what I usually read, but you seem to know everyone so well it feels like you're holding back on us in order to keep things moving. In other words, the pace is great but I'd love more elaboration of, say, how Jim's interaction with coworkers contributed to his mood at the end of the day... he'd be working with interns that are probably younger than him, or his more laid back personality doesn't fit in well.

I'll have to read further to see if the comments are still relevant- and by the way, I like the premise of the story so much it was hard to stop reading long enough to leave a comment!

Author's Response: First off, thank you so much for you comment. I wish I could get more comments like this, because I\'m looking to improve my writing, and I think I can learn a lot from what my readers have to say. Thank you.\r\n\r\nIt\'s hard for me to write details, and I\'m sure you can tell by my story that I\'m just an amateur....very amateur. I came up with this great idea for a story about a future internship for Jim, and I find myself struggling to write it how I see it in my head. I think I skip the details because I *do* want the story to progress fast, so I can get in everything that is going through my head. Proof-go read the last chapter...I had so many things I wanted to write, so there aren\'t *ANY* details. \r\n\r\nNeedless to say, I won\'t be quitting my day job. Hopefully if I continue to write Fanfic, I can improve upon writing details. I\'m sure working on it!\r\n\r\nThanks, again.

You are just TOO spot-on! Plus that's precisely how I feel when I buy something just because I heard one song on a TV show and someone asks how I heard of them... :)

I like the messiness of Jim's breakup, no perfect first date sex (although in other fic there's no problem with that), and the way the two of them are fumbling a bit with the transition from intimate friendship to intimate relationship. Looking forward to the rest!

PS Pam's music habit sounds like canon. It would be so like her to use it as a quiet way of expressing herself, organizing her thoughts, having some control around her environment. Not to mention something she shares with Jim *sigh*.

Author's Response: Variella, thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful review. I appreciate it. I\'ve gone back and forth on my opinion about how soon they slept together, and, clearly, I\'ve decided that it was pretty quick, but not the first night (though, like you said, I have no problem with that interpretation). I feel like Jim rushing out to buy the engagement ring confirms my little theory, so I\'m just going to run with it. And, yes, I\'m sure that Pam\'s life was littered with all sorts of little ways that she let Jim in without acknowleging it to herself or Roy. Music seems like a likely one.

Definitely exciting! Concrit: there are many misspelled and misused words (i.e. 'they're' instead of 'their') and grammatical errors that interrupt the flow of the story... internet problems are annoying, I've had a lot of them myself lately, but getting someone to beta for you would probably solve the problem. There's a list on the fanfic home page I think of people willing to beta. This fic is fantastic, so the mechanical errors are more annoying than anything else.

I don't know how I am going to wait for the next part- well, I guess I don't have a choice! I really like how you have mixed up the chronological order of the story; definitely adds to the suspense, and makes the plot seem more complex. Awesome chapters so far :)

Author's Response: I appreciate your advice but I\'m hardly new to this site. I actually am a beta for a few other writers and sometimes it\'s harder to notice mistakes when it\'s my own writing. However, a friend did look for this story for me after seeing this review and there was one misspelled word according to him. You definitely have me paying special close attention to what I\'m currently working on so I can only thank you for that. In the serious way and not the rude way.\r\nThank you for taking time to read and review my story.

Summary:

This will be a series of self-contained chapters (oneshots) exploring various "what ifs" pertaining to episodes spanning seasons one through three. Each chapter will examine how things would've gone differently if either Jim or Pam had responded to a given situation the way that (most) fans had wanted or almost expected them to.

For example, the first chapter focuses on how things would've happened differently if Jim had confessed during those twenty-seven seconds of silence on the booze cruise when we were all holding our breath and hoping he would.

Among the other chapters I have mapped out: What if all the reminders of Jim in "Gay Witch Hunt" had provoked not a small, sad smile from Pam at the end of the episode, but rather, had motivated her to take action -- drive to Stamford to see him for the first time in four months? Or what if Jim had responded to Pam's text in "Diwali" via a post-Jagermeister phone call? What if Jim had walked in on Pam crying at the end of "Back From Vacation"? (...You get the idea.)

Again, though, each chapter will be confined to an episode, so it will essentially be a series of oneshots that are unrelated to each other.

This is the most amazingly real and well written drunk dialing I have ever read. Seriously. You handled Jim perfectly- he has to get angry SOMETIME and you having it come out of being hurt was a very good reason.

Also, Jim having the guts to call her back (almost too late!) was brave, but keeping him a little reticent was a good call because Pam held all the cards as far as knowing what had been said- he really would have been aware of the disadvantage.

Great ending- realistic I think.

Also, Call and Answer? I've seen BNL live several times (helps that I'm Canadian) and it's always dead quiet in the crowd when this one is sung. It's great.

Going out to clubs every night and sleeping around wasn’t part of who she was, but it was when the face that woke up next to her every morning began to blur into that of another, that she realized there was a problem.
I liked this paragraph because it described why the shift was so disturbing to Pam; without doing anything or changing her routine, things changed anyway.
