So lovely, lis!  This is one of the best reasons to be sleepless, I guess. :)

My favorite is the paragraph about things changing and staying the same.

It's a nice story.  I think it was called "5 things" and now it's not?  There are a lot of other nights Pam was probably a bit sleepless. ;)

Author's Response: Thank you! The "Five things" is in the subtitle. I'm definitely done with this one, although I could probably come up with a lot of other nights (including how she got knocked up in the first place and lots of nights with the new baby!). I'm so glad you stuck with all five nights. I liked that idea of changing and staying the same, too. Thanks again!

Aw, poor Jim!  This makes me feel his pain, definitely.  Good job.  (Poor aching Jim!)  I love the last little paragraph.

Is Martin perhaps Martin Freeman of the British Office?  He is in my book. ;)

Nice job, but... Jim took Pam to a "dive bar" on their first real date?  I hope not. ;)  I also have to take exception to this statement: "She was tall..."  Rashida Jones is about 5'4", not even quite average for a woman her age, I don't think.  I can't imagine Karen thinks of herself as tall, especially when she was dating Jim at 6'3".

I like Karen's strength here.  She's obviously hurting, but she's strong and determined to get through it.  I like how she knew not to go into work, and this line: "He took her heart and he took her hope and he took her for granted but he would not take her pride and her professionalism with it."  I liked the bit about Jim checking out the tea bags even though he didn't drink it, also -- that was a neat detail.

Your final line "Because today, it still fucking hurt" is a great way to end it.

Author's Response: good point, re: being tall. i removed that - i have a problem in that i always think people on tv/movies/etc are always a lot taller than they are IRL. hehe. thanks for catching it :) also, i chose the dive bar for her to run into them briefly because i envision their first date as something not ordinary and could see him taking her somewhere cheesy and chill away from prying eyes. i know most would disagree but since their relationship has been so unconventional from the start, i thought their first date might be as well. \r\n\r\nin any case, thank you so much for your reactions and i\'m glad you enjoyed it :)

What a good job incorporating a true story into your story, NEJ.

I especially liked the lines "I was ten before I knew that not every town had a mine in it" and "He remembers that all of his ancestors, and all of hers, all of everyone's, are underground now, that someday she and he will be too, and it's not a morbid thought. It feels like connection, a link to a long line of bones of people who lived and loved and worked, who would be glad to know their line survives in him."

You really get across the image of coal country and how it's shaped them a bit.

Author's Response: Thanks, TLK. I wasn't sure if this would be perceived as a "downer" of a story; I don't want to be insensitive about a tragedy. I wanted to show how the echoes of something so painful can still be heard generations later, and can affect even someone as sunnily optimistic as Jim Halpert. At any rate, I'm glad you liked it. :)

So good, carbondalien.  Angela's rigid sense of right and way, way wrong would be a very good reason to never speak to her again.  I love the part about having said "I love you."

Angela is so supportive of her sister up until she sees where her sister is.  Her sister has crosses a line for Angela which can't be uncrossed.

I think this is very in character for Angela.

I wish her sister had called someone else -- anyone else -- and then she'd still have a sister.  At least until the next time she crossed one of Angela's lines and Angela found out.

Author's Response: I\'m glad that you liked it and thought that Angela was in character. Angela has so many (sometimes secret or hidden) dimensions to her, including her rigid sense of right and wrong, and I think that\'s one of the reasons I love writing her.

I also especially liked the part about upgrading and the cell phones/caller ID part, which is so, so, true.  Nowadays, you almost alway know who's calling.

This stands very well on its own.

Thanks, Kev! I was a little worried that this was way too out of character for Ryan, so it's good to hear some reassurance from the master of minor characters. ;)

Anyway, I really appreciate your review! Thanks for always being so awesome!

Nice. I especially like: "I didn't mean for this to become a thing…" and the part where he was talking about her discussion with Kelly.

Speaking of Kelly, if you hadn't mentioned America's Next Top Model in the notes, I wouldn't have know what "ANTM Anonymous" referred to. Would Jim know what ANTM refers to? Do ANTM fans actually use the letters when speaking aloud about the show? (You can tell how familiar I am with the show.)

I like this sentence "It seems that every time she thinks they've moved far beyond last year there's something else that comes up." So many people seem to assume everything's really easy, and some of the scenes in the show even make everything seem easier and more talked out than I think it would be, for example, the "is the magic gone" scene, the "we should have started dating years ago" scene, and the deleted scene where Pam's teasing Jim about Karen "because you love her?" in the baby voice. I much prefer something that shows there's still difficulty. They went through a lot last year, and those hurts and aches don't just go away with one kiss or one talk.

Hooray for stomping out writer's block. :)

Author's Response:

Thank you TLK!   RE: ANTM - I do.  It's a mouthful (twss) otherwise and they have on occassion used the abbreviation on the show as well.  So...yeah I understand it's not the best example - but I also bet you Kelly ADORES ANTM and I can imagine Pam being hooked even though you'd think it wasn't her thing.  Guilty pleasure and all that.

I agree.  They've glossed over a ton in S4.  I don't think it would happen so easily.

And they say fanfic is full of unrealistic scenarios. :)

Thank you.  Writers block sucks - but reviews like yours are worth it when you finally break through.  :)

I love how you have this where they just about miss the boat again, and they just barely, barely manage not to.

DAWE-SOME.

Author's Response:

I've written this scenario before and I've written it a lot neater (and sweeter).  I realize I've conveniently glossed over some of the obvious obstacles but I was trying to get to the happy without spelling it all out.   The near miss kind of thing helped accomplish that fact.  So it's not them dancing and then running out to make out in the parking lot ('cause yeah...I've had them do that) it's them acknowledging what they want - and knowing they can't fix it all in one night.   At least that's what I hope came across.

And I'm guessing (hoping) from your review that it did.

Awesome!  Pam is going to get to meet Jim's brothers?  Very cool.

I love this: "For a second all he can do is stand there staring down at her, blinking in shock, because he's sure he didn't imagine what just happened. It had been like those moments out on the deck of the Booze Cruise, when it seemed so many things passed between them -- all those things left unsaid echoing in the silence surrounding them." C'mon, you two!  You can cut the sexual tension with a knife.  You two kids belong together. ;)  (I'll just talk to your borrowed characters a while.  You don't mind, right?)

Nice job; I look forward to more.

I noticed one misspelling - sponteaneous should be spontaneous.

Roy's going to be really sorry he was out of town. :)

Author's Response:

Gah, thank you for pointing out the spelling thing!  I've only got wordpad on my laptop, which doesn't have spell check (grrrr), and this chapter was unbeta'd.  (Usually Starry Dreamer catches that sort of thing for me.)

I'm glad you're excited that Pam's going to meet the brothers, because I actually wrote the scene when she meets Josh immediately after I watched the final two episodes of Chuck (a few weeks ago).  I never write things out of sequence, but I couldn't help it; I was dying to write that scene!  So I'm glad to hear that you're looking forward to it -- I tried to capture some of Zach Levi's/Chuck's bumbling, foot-in-his-mouth-dorkiness-while-trying-to-recover.  :o)

And you can talk to my borrowed characters all you want, my friend -- after all, I dream up their dialogue when I'm driving around, running errands. :o)

This is sooo good!  As I was reading through, many lines came to me as being particularly good, or apt, but...I'd have to re-read it to find them. ;)

You're really capturing Pam's thoughts here, I think.  She'd be so stunned.  Jim's thoughts, too, although he got less "play" in this chapter, were really good, and I love everyone's reactions to the situation.

Also, Pam's mom is a good mom. :)

It may take me a while to get through the chapters, but I will. :)

Author's Response:

I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter; I thought it was necessary to show the progression of both their thoughts (but most importantly, Pam's), but I know inner monologue doesn't always make for the most stimulating reading.

Glad you liked Pam's mom as well -- I wish they'd bring her back; I loved her in SH.
