Following a crushing showing at the art exhibition, Pam is offered a new path forward by her instructor. Finding confidence and a renewed sense of self worth, she is afforded the opportunity to break free from an oppressive and toxic environment. Jim and Pam are CIA agents assigned to break a Scranton element of a smuggling ring. "Stamford" is a cover for Jim being recalled to Langley after confessing his feelings for Pam, but now he's coming back. And he has to recruit Dwight as an asset.

It’s not as if she’s never seen his desk without him sitting there, because of course she has. He’s stayed home sick, made occasional—if unexciting—use of his vacation days, gone on sales calls — she knows what the office looks like when the shape of him is missing, when she glances up and there’s an absence where the slope of his shoulders is supposed to be.

As she settles in that first day of his absence, hangs her coat and takes her seat, Pam lets herself miss him as a coworker and as a best friend and that’s it. Work will be work, with or without Jim Halpert.

But that’s a lie, because of course it is.

Jim isn't inviting Pam to the Christmas Eve party he and Karen are holding. Three ghosts visit him the night before the big party and try to bring him to his senses. Will he listen to them, or will he convince himself that it is all a figment of his imagination and leave things the way they are?
